Another Survival Gun Alternative.

With all of these recent discussions about 410. shotguns and the lack of the M6 scout availability, I have come up with a alternative. I would like others to weigh in with their thoughts.

I have the Rossi 410/22 for my son. I like it. It works.

I don't like the weight of the extra 22 barrel. I am going on the idea of having it in my pack. Is it heavy? Nope! I am just trying to improve the overall usefulness of a single gun.

I started digging around for alternatives and came up with this.

rossi tuffy.jpg

Rossi Tuffy. It is a 410. with thumb hole stock and a little compartment in the stock that holds 5 rounds of 410.

Now for the 22 portion of the equation, I am thinking about adding one of these

http://www.mcace.com/shotguninserts.htm

They are machined inserts. I like the idea of just having to drop the insert into the barrel and being able to shoot rimfire. I will probably go with the 18" insert for a cost of $95.00

The weight of the Rossi Tuffy is quoted at around 3lbs and I figure another lb for the insert. so for 4lbs and about $225.00 I have a good field/survival gun.

I don't know how many of you know of the company that does the inserts but if you look around their website the possbilities are endless for your single barrel guns. I also thought about getting a cheap 410. over and under and using an insert to mimic the M6 scout. this way you could have both 410/22 ready to go at any time. I am still kicking that one around.

Your thoughts?

Thanks Paul

wow I have never seen those before...looks like a great idea. Make sure to post about results/accuracy if you deside to spring for one!!!

Looks like an inexpensive method to double-gun. Please post your shooting results.

Paul,

I've researched the mcace adapters pretty throughly.. Most people love them and claim they are accurate.. However the .22 conversion requires the firng pin to strike a metal plate whcih transfers the force to the rim of the .22.. some times this can lead to broken firing pins.. might be advisable to go for a center fire option instead.. (although personally I love the .22) perhaps a .22 hornet (that they offer) might be better on the firing pin.

Thanks for the heads up Riley. I think that would decrease the value of this setup a little bit.

Just based on economics, 22 rimfire is so much cheaper. But it begs the question, how much do I pick up in power using the 22 Hornet, Hmmm... I will see if a more people will give me their experience with the 22 Hornet Vs. 22LR.

I am still kicking this one around to see if it is viable. If anyone else has input please don't hesitate.

Paul

I have one of these little conversions but it's for a 12g shotgun. I have had it for almost 6 months but I have yet to shoot it. Mine is not from the linked company and my Google-fu is not strong enough to find the place I got mine from.

I have one of the m6 over and unders in 410/22 but I find the 410 shells very expensive. I personally like this 20 guage made by H&R called the tamer. The 20 is very versatile in that you can shoot slugs and buckshot which are quite powerful. I think I paid 139.00 new and it is a very solid gun and handy to shoot. You can also get one of those inserts for it. You can get the 20 guage 100 round value packs at walmart at a good price.

If anyone has a M6 Scout in .22 long rifle / .410 and they have a Doc that will do it, I'm offering up a right testicle. :D

that is a nice gun...at one point was it called a Snakecharmer???? seems like ive seen one like that!

eidt: read the 20g post...maybe snake tamer? thats cool...snake charmer i think was a derringer or something

Valcas..h&r make a model that is called the survivor I think... It has the same stock as the tamer above.. but has a .410 barrel with a screw in choke, that also chambers .45 lc
That seems to me like a handy little set up.

Incidentally the .22 Hornet packs significanlty more wallop than a .22 lr.. it is arguably suitable for deer size game (although I would not advise it) but it is legal to do so here in NY

Riley,

H&R states that the 410/45lc barrel is rifled. I wonder what that does to the shot string with such a small capacity of shot. I would imagine it spins the shot cup/ wad and you lose your pattern pretty quickly. Have you heard anything about that?

It sure would make the ulimate little game getter if you could have the 410./ 45lc and a 16" 22 hornet insert in that gun.

That is somethng to ponder as well. the 45lc is not slouch with hand loads from what i have heard.

Paul

I've heard from folks that used the TC model 45lc/410 that its pretty nice.. ALso with the full choke on the .410 you might want the pattern to disseminate a little.. to give you more of a mod. type spread..

For what it's worth I hear Marbles is going to re-release the game getter... I believe thats what the m6 was designed from

h&r is great. there are dozens fo threads around here about combo guns, and there are many cheap alternatives out there. Just because it isn't 100% skeletonized stainless or aluminum doesn't mean it wouldn't make a good survival gun. The rossi double and triple sets are sweet, a good .22lr, 243/308 and 12 guage set weighs and costs next to nothing and you can get a convenient nylon folding barrel bag to lash to your pack with some maintenance goodies.

New marbles gamegetter, I got this off of Marble's website.

Game-Getter Gun Update (October 2009)

The gun industry is still moving strong which means we are manufacturing a lot of gun sights. Our commitment to our gun sight customers has taken up every person and hour we have for machining, research and development of new products. This positive impact on our gun sight business has delayed the development of the Game-Getter Gun. We continue to move forward with the project but it is not at the pace that we originally projected.

With all this said, we are pushing out the introduction of the new Game-Getter to the 2010 Shot Show that will be held in Las Vegas on January 16th, 2010. We will continue to compile an updated list on our website so everyone will be contacted when orders are ready to be taken.

The new Game-Getter Gun will have an adjustable folding rear sight, windage adjustable rear sight, holster, and will be delivered in a wood box replicating the original. When we start accepting orders for the guns in 2010. We will be requesting a 50% deposit and at that time you will be given your serial number.

I appreciate all of your interest and your patience. We want to insure this gun is made to the same level of quality Marble's has been respected for the last 116 years.

Thank you,

Craig Lauerman,

President Marble Arms

A friend of mine set up a side by side 12 ga with a .45-70 barrel insert in one of the barrels. I never got a chance to fire it as it was off to AK as a bush pilots gun. I thought it was an interesting concept.

I've thought about the same thing here in Brazil. A 16 gauge double is easy to buy and I could put a .38 special insert in the other side. I have access to .38 special ammo here.

Mac - Great idea. How was your trip?

I'd just go with one of the Rossi Matched Pairs in .22 and .410 (or 20 Ga.). Sleeving a shotgun barrel, leaves a lot to be answered. How do you adjust it to hit POA/POI with only the bead sight on a shotgun? You can get the Rossi combo kit for $130 delivered from Bud's, it's kind of hard to beat. Especially no more service than the gun will likely see.
