Another Survival Gun Alternative.

I guess my case is just conceptual - as I don't hunt now. Still, I think possibly my 5" 63 would be ideal. My only change would probably be the HiViz sight in place of the blade, as I did on my 617 (See below.). That has been a great aid to plinking - even freehand silhouette shooting out to 75+ yards. Yes, they are a considerable expenditure - but, you can't beat them for dependabilty. The 63, as a J-frame, just won't ever have the slick trigger in DA as the 617, but it is serviceable - and 3/4 lb lighter - you could carry more ammo.

S&W has a 3" 63 already fitted with the HiViz new for 2010 - probably out in May. Local .410 ammo is about as scarce as .380 Auto nowadays - blame it on the Taurus 'Judge' popularity. BTW, I've shot one of them... I already have an excellent .45 Colt DA - and that aint it! Just my random thoughts...

Just a heads-up for anyone interested, there is a SA M6 Scout up in the trade forum right now.

I have a Rossi 22/410. Got it for my son. Wish I had gotten the 20g. Shells are far cheaper and a 20g gives you much more options. Ducks, turkey, deer are possible with a 20g, but not a 410.

The 410 just doesn't have much shot in the pattern so you are limited to much shorter ranges and small game. The 410 slug really isn't much. It's something like 70 grains. I think the 5 pellet OOO buck would be my choice over the single 70 grain slug in a 410 for larger game.

any gun at all can be the 'ideal' survival gun, if the right circumstances present themselves. ;)
