Another "WOW"

Most of these knives that Joe has been listing are going to go for big bucks because (in my opinion) they are one-of-a-kinds coming out of the Buck factory with a letter of authenticity. In reality, most are basically just older production knives that have been modified in their custom shop, but are nevertheless "one-ofs." With these prices, it would seem that Joe (and Buck) have figured out a way to substantially increase the value of that old inventory that Joe is clearing out. I wonder if Larry O can purchase these at wholesale for us BCCI members?? :)

I agree TS, I was watching that blued 560 that didnt turn out right, it got discarded to a closet at the time as a failed experiment but now is considered rare/odd/collectible. I quit watching it when it got up toward the mid 100's. I normally watch all the way just out of curiosity-anyone remember what it ended up going for?

The person offering it is a knifemaker. I would guess that the workmanship is good and he would honor it, if there was something wrong. He is on the forum at times, I've dealt with him and he's an honest player. I'd take the risk, if indeed I was interested in this knife. In garryale's case, it would go to Russia so even a Buck warranty would be problematic in terms of transits.

I too have purchased from him (Seals)....he's a stand up seller on ebay. I bought this custom 111 from him and his work (F&F) is outstanding.

I think he is also on Bladeforums and frequents this subforum from time to time. His work usually looks pretty darn good.

Hate to say it but Im not sure that these sales are a good sign for Buck. Seems a bit desperate to me. Im sure Im alone on this.

Then again, maybe it's not "desperate," but just efficient.

After all, if you don't sell them......what do you do? Just let them sit around? So what's the best way to sell them?

A venue like e-Bay will bring much higher prices than you could get in a store--and do it much quicker, too.

Selling them on e-Bay to get the best prices is very, very, typical old-school Buck. Quirky, maybe......but efficient.

I would think they had a 'museum' in their factory or plans for one in the future where these knives could go. Seems like they are "selling off" their history for a few bucks.

Thanks for the correction on "desparate". I always treat it like 'separate'. Maybe it will finally sink in now.

In Addition,

If these were sold in the buck store only, a select few get an opportunity to buy one (locales only). Same thing if these were to be sold to Buck's wholesaler's/dealer's at a reduced cost and then resold, the dealers may only offer them to their best customers (cutting most of us out). I think by having Joe sell them we all get a fair chance to buy one. But, it's going to cost you what the market demands.

As it should be, I think......many of these are going to be cherished possessions and Buck deserves a fair price for their property.

Another aspect is that these have been attracting a lot of attention on e-Bay......good, cheap worldwide advertising and publicity that you'd never get if they were sitting in a store.

Maybe creating a few new Buck collectors.

And Buckstop.......you have a point, but maybe these are the ones that have been culled out of the museum stock and have no application there.

Anyhow, I love watching Joe's auctions and I think he loves doing them.

:)

It's hard to say, Buckstophere, you may be right, but the amount of money any of these bring in is just a drop in the bucket of a daily operation.

I'd like to think they have found a creative way to sell off excess and generate a little publicity.

...I thought things were tough out there...

As is usual in America......things ARE DAMNED TOUGH--for most of us.

But the fortunate ones have more than enough money to throw around.

May suck, but that's the way it is.

I don't collect 532's and don't follow their history or values. So I can't comment on the $$$$$ spent on this, a few folks wanted this one and were in the position to say "It's only money". At least those of you who were bidding don't have buyer remorse for paying more than you think this knife is worth. Also your not siting there saying....."Darn it, out bid by $5 again" (coulda, shoulda, woulda).

Oooops, should have said 531, I don't know any thing about those critters ether, except it looks like a 532;).

Yep Darryl,

What is it they say in those fancy rich folk's store's? Oh, I remember now. Some fellow looks down his nose at you and states "If you have to ask the price, you can't afford it any way":p:D

...You got that right JB...I woulda been askin' how much the sheath was that went with that 531...I mighta bid on that sheath ...:p

I've had him to do 2 knives for me anf both turned exceptional. He is a very personable man to talk to also. Not trying to get rich, just make a decent living. His prices are very fair. His fit and finish are secone to none. I could not tell any difference from factory knife.

I have never bought anything from him, just bid on a couple.....but his work looks good to me and I will buy from him when I find the right thing again and get lucky on the bid. His auctions have that look of honesty and authenticity.

I almost got a nice Three-Dotter that he had done up in stag.

Maybe soon something will click.

:)
