Man, I really need to live somewhere else! Amazing steel finds, anvils, etc!

Tell you what, I'll give you $250 for the anvil IF you drive down here to Texas and drop it off at my door. I'm feeling generous, so take me up on it, and I'll throw in a pizza and a few beers as well.

Man, what did you do? Run through a field of 4 leaf clover carrying a horshoe in each hand (tip up of course)?!?!?! :D First the job, now this. Good job!!!!!

Just to clarify Erik, you don't need to hang a horseshoe tips up or down to hold the luck/pour the luck down, according the the story I know.

Wow, never heard that before. Learn something new every day!

yep somebody's tryin to tell you your supposed to be a knife maker... that many doors dont open that fast for it not to be brother.:D:eek::D

what do i need to look for and how good of a deal is this.

First find it if it has any markings on it. This will help you to determine who made it and possibly also when. Once you know that you'll be able to figure out if it's cast steel (good, maybe great depending on manufacturer), wrought iron with welded tool steel face (good to very good), or cast iron (crap crappity crapcrap).

When you go to check it out in person, bring a T-square and a ball bearing. Use the square to measure flatness of the face. Use the ball bearing to measure rebound (drop it on the face and see how high it bounces - 80-90% return would be very good, less than 60% would be poor). The just visually inspect it - look for chips, cracks, torch cuts, or anything else that might detract from functionality or durability.

This anvil could be worth anywhere from $100 for cast iron door stop to $2000 for high quality/ collectible anvil.

Post pics and we'll be able to tell you more.

man that was a good score. I am waiting for some knife maker in my neck of the woods to decide he just wants to learn to dance in Ballet so I can get a deal like that.

300# anvil @ $3.- a lbs. = $300.- Good deal unless it's missing a horn!
Mace

Mace flunked math but, thats ok he is a good smith anyway. LOL. I myself have never heard of a cheapo 300# anvil. Most of the Cheapos are 110# on down. Could be wrong and history proves that LOL

J, perhaps you should forget knifemaking and start selling supplies and stuff. You seem to accumulate gear by just breathing. I've heard of animal magnetism (I suffer from this, when I go hunting there are often small animals that have to be pried off of my jacket) but you seem to have tool magnetism or something. :D Sheesh, share the wealth lol

that's ok Mace.... when ever someone asks me to do some "math" i always use the quote-"In real life, I assure you, there is no such thing as algebra."

:D

At a buck a pound it is hard to go wrong. At worst you will have a 300# door stop lol. By the way we need pictures it's been almost 2 whole days. WE CAN"T STAND IT ANY MORE HEEELLLPPPP. Seriously Jt you really need to jump on this and at least go look at it. A good anvil will make a huge difference in your work. A decent anvil is much better than the piece of bar you have. I was amazed how much the anvil helped when I worked on a 500# haybudden. But I screwed up an dinged the face and got kicked off the anvil. But it did teach me the value of a good anvil.
