i really jsut need to buy one of those nice big blocks and hold on to it for a 7 day razor set with differently ground razors

Very cool thread, I've always loved walnut as a gun wood and now as a knife wood. I think I need a matching blade for a certain old winchester 94 now.

I love to work with walnut for my handles , i also like to use 1/4 inch walnut dowels to secure my handles. It gives a nice contrast to other woods and once glued with wood glue i have never had one come apart.

I love walnut! I collect old .22 rifles and refinish the stocks. There are some suprisingly nice pieces once you get the old crap off. Here is a piece I recently cut off a block of Claro. Not spectacular but very appealing nonetheless. I was wondering, I have always used truoil for finishing which turns the wood darker. What is your best oil to finish with?

Dan Farr finishes his walnut handles with several coats of Permalyn gunstock finish, sanding in between coats. If you let the final coat dry and fully harden and call it good, you will have a fairly high gloss finish which some like and some don't. For those that don't, you just buff it lightly with Rottenstone to bring it down to a softer-looking satin finish (see first post for examples).

This is what I have done on the few knives I have made. I can't tell you it's the best finish, but I can say it provides a very durable finish and absolutely does not darken the wood. If anything, it makes the grain positively pop.

I believe Bailey Bradshaw has used this as well for both his knives and gunstocks. And Matt Gregory has used it on knives.

Nice thread, and a lot of nice pics. Here's a Fisk fighter with flame-crotch northern black walnut:

And for those who enjoy walnut-flavored eye candy, here are a few Winchester Model 70 Classic Super Grade gun stocks showing a variety of figure patterns and grain structure, if this is a kosher offering here:

Who ever got that peice is lucky indeed, Also "that's not a chainsaw, THIS is a Chainsaw!" dang, dundee?

Will, That is a awesome Fisk Fighter and the weapons are stunning pieces, love the walnut thread. I have been attached to walnut wood since refinishing pianos in the late 70's. Once you took the old finish off it was unbelievable the wood grains that you would uncover.

Hope to see you at blade this year, again.

Thanks for the link Roger!

John, those wiggly lines are pretty nice :)

Burt Foster is making me a small personal with english walnut scales. Good walnut never fails to please.

I love walnut too!

Here is one I did a while back with an interesting looking piece of black walnut. I finished it with TruOil and rubbed the gloss back down to a satin finish.

Looks to me like John C scored on a world class piece of curly claro.

I like walnut because you can get such a big variety of looks.
These were all cut from the same piece of walnut.
