Any Fixed Single Speed Riders here ?

here is a tactic I have used on a bike I lock up a lot . The only thing I added was to zip tie the center of the chain (so it looks like an 8 )to stop it from flopping around .Cheap and effective.

That's where I got the idea for the u lock holder same site . This one is locked up all the time even on my enclosed locked back porch all of a sudden lots of thievery going on around here thinking about getting a chain lock so I would be able to lock it to a tree in my back yard getting tired of carrying up and down 2 flights of stairs 10 times a day. Still bring it upstairs at night.

I pulled my Fuji down off the garage hooks yesterday afternoon and gave it a look-over.

Dang, I love this thing.

...In which it occurs that, with the shifters somewhat frozen, it already is a single-speed bike!

;)

Sorry for the thread drift, Legion 12, but I'm enjoying your single-speed adventures (and yours and others' tips, lock-up and otherwise), and do like thinking about these things.

Idiot masochist fixie rider reporting for duty! I've been riding this as my one and only since April for city commuting. Not sure what compels me to take it on 20 mile group cross rides every weekend (terrain around here is anything but pancakey). I usually get dropped at the end on a straightaway sprint. Fun stuff!

Cool thread, thanks! I like to pick up what info I can as I'm astoundingly bicycle illiterate for the amount of riding I do. Can change a flat and lube a chain, that's about it :)

Good pedigree on that All-City, klineh

The 2013 North American Cycle Courier Championships competition for working couriers was won by All-City rider Christina Peck. The competition for ex-messengers was won by All-City rider Austin Horse. There were superb riders riding both fixed and free, single and multi-speed.

WD-40 in the shifters and 3n1 oil in the cable housing.

Now go ride!

Took a quick shot of my boss's bike a 3 speed Gary Fisher rode it a few time's baskets gotta go imagine if it was loaded with a 12 pack of adult beverages pretty dangerous if you ask me.

My singlespeed at a break area on a local trail

My main bike out on another local trail where I turned around. It is 20 miles from where this picture was taken to where my car was parked

Old mountian bike I picked up to tinker with . I didn't realize what I was buying. I paid very little for it . after some reserch I found out it was an $1100 bike in 92 it is still in the stage of being rehabbed

Thank you I has just been the last little bit that I could afford what I like. The green bike a custom surly long haul trucker built on a new old stock 2008 frame (got the color I wanted that was no longer made) cost more than any car I had the first ten years of our marriage . we just past 30 b.t.w but it feels like you could ride it for ever

Yes, it's in need of some TLC.

Hey, I actually have those on hand!

Yet, these sidewalls give me pause....

A little something else to zoom-zoom while I figure out how far to go with the Fuji-- which I hadn't expected to miss after adding this one:

Hey ~p ( It's Sarah, if i remember right?)

You're gonna need a little more than just some WD40 and some 3n1 oil! Its a dirty job bringing a bike like that back to good running condition, but its not hard or expensive work.

I would consider upgrading to modern brakes and ditch the side-pull rim warmers.

Wow, do those Surly bikes look sweet. Is Surly also the company that makes some bikes with monstrously fat tires, or is that someone else?

(Just did my own search-- yes, they are, although there are probably others.)

Yup! Er, sshhhhhhh.

Nah, too late. :D

I kinda knew that, but it was fun for a short time to pretend that's all I'd need. Then, I got the bike out again.

Sounds like what I need to undertake on my bathroom, before my son's wedding in three weeks. As in, the bike's going to have to stay on the back burner for now. Metaphorically.

I would consider upgrading to modern brakes and ditch the side-pull rim warmers.

Thought that might catch your eye. I've never liked them. Almost 30 years of suckage, and yet they abide. Funny how that can happen....

Got the brake straightened out and realized nobody has been adding any knife porn to their pics this is how I have to lock my bike up during the day 1/2 braided cable around a pine tree . At night it goes upstairs and is locked the same way instead of a tree I lock it to my bike stand cable is padlocked to an eye hook screwed to beam . Thanks again Fast14

Pertinux's old beater looks like about 90% of the bikes I take in to re-furbish. I clean 'em up, remove surface rust, rebuild hubs and such as needed, etc, etc.
Most of 'em I sell for under 200 bucks, a lot around 100. Re-cycle 'em into the community, as it were.

I've only owned 2 Bikes I bought new a Le tour and this single speed all the rest were rebuilt . They had 1 day a year when I was a kid junk day my father and I would drive around and pick up any old bikes we could find then it was up to me to scrape together a ride . Or if I was lucky I would get one of my cousins hand me downs built some real crazy bikes when I was a kid choppers were a big thing weld 2 forks together and build are own remember sissy bars ?

Last month I took my old Fuji to a local bike shop. Rather than have it converted outright, I simply had them replace the tires and brake pads, free up the derailleurs (for morale), etc.

Since then, I've been riding it as a one-speed, leaving it in whatever-gear to see what I think. It's grand most of the time, kinda sucks on uphills and I wish I had more oooph on the downs.

So: just about right? :D

Rust removal is a (slow) work in progress, but look: the handlebars are shiny again.

I'm loving riding it again.
