Lack of trees.

Lack of trees.

That's certainly desolate. See my earlier statement about not using a hammock in the desert or above the treeline. The best you could do in those situations is to set one up as a bivy.

My point was that in places where it is feasible to use a hammock (trees), there's no reason you can't adapt your gear for year round hammock camping, including the winter.

My Uncle John turned me on to these about 50 years ago - I've gone thru a couple of 'em. GI issue jungle hamock - mesquito bar is built in - they are stupidly heavy - but the bugs sleep outside - the breeze blows thru - a simply great high summer camping tool. they were issued as recently as Viet-Nam and I've seen some in surplus stores for around $35 up until a couple of years ago. Comes complete with funky WW2 surplus preservative stink ( goes away after a couple of uses) - great and cheap way to try out the concept. I'll have to show him this thread - he won't believe what has been done with the basic idea.

I'm in the same boat, my old tent died and i've been looking at these bensbackwoods hammocks.
I've bought lots of stuff from them before and they have good products and service.

So does anyone here actually own a Bensbackwoods hammock?

FYI-They sells two different kinds, one kind on the website store and a different one on the ebay store.

My first hammock was a Clark Tropical model. I used it for around two years non stop even through the winter. Now I have a North American model which is quite an improvement. When investigating different brands I chose the Clarks due to the higher quality of construction. I was skeptical at frist as to the comfort claims, and was happily surprised to discover that these things are fantastic for comfort. I use a Big Agnes bag in mine these bags have a pouch which holds my insulation pad so that it doesn't move around in the hammock. A pad is not a neccesity except in cold weather, and not so much then either in the North American by Clark due to the insulating pockets underneath. I love being off the ground, swingin around between two trees.

Yeah J, I was going to go cheaper since I wasn't sold on the hammock camping idea, but do to the overwhelming responce I figured what the hell.

j you SUCK man. I'm in email convos right now with Tom to order a Jungle Hammock. When will you learn that I'm incapable of seeing something neat, and then not getting it.

So... I may be hanging from the trees in Loud Thunder!

Thats what im thinkin too..... Be a good place to try one out. Which one is it youre getting?

I just ordered a Jungle Hammock from http://www.mosquitohammock.com/
I want to try it out at Briar Patch so I paid the extra to get it rushed.
I picked up some 1" poly webbing in 12' and 2' lengths as well to replace the stuff that comes with it (at the advice of some guys on the hammock forum).

I hope there are lots of trees in the group site at Loud Thunder :)

Sweeeet.... I am gonna get one, still deciding which though. I like the fact that that one comes with a fly.

Hey any other suggestions out there?

You can get the fly seperate from them for between $40 & $60

I didn't order mine yet.

Noshtero, how long did he say it takes to get?

It's my understanding that there is usually a couple week wait to get one. If you email Tom, he can tell you what your options are for rush ordering. Like most things, if you're willing to pay, things can happen quickly ;)

I have a couple of hammocks. My favorite is without a doubt my Hennesey expedition. I use it just about any time I can. Much better than my tent under most conditions. I have used it down to 35deg with no problem.

I just recieved my hammock from bensbackwoods. It looks to be a good hammock for the price, and I couldnt be happier with the turnaround time. I ordered friday, got it on monday! I will set it up in the yard later and snap some pics. I still need a fly though...
