Any Harley riders here? What scales would you buy?

Strip the sole off these:

The Harley riders that come through here have money and spend it.
I say use some black fossil walrus ivory.
My thoughts are that cheap materials are not what people look for on a MS knife. .....even bikers.

Well most MS,s don't recycle steel. It's just a used primary chain, I can't see it bring a pile of money just because of that. It's a cool knife or at least will be when its done but I,ve never related mystery metal with high end. I shouldn't call it mystery metal because it's a Duckworth chain made in USA but I,m not sure what steel it is. It has 1084 powder metal in it and it did Rockwell at 63 at full hardness so It will make a knife at least.

Mark, send em to me I,ll grind out a pair of scales and make a sheath with a buckle on. :)

I can't afford anything with a HD logo on it:( but maybe do an ivory micarta and scrim the good as gold logo on it.
How's your son doing with the engraving, maybe a collaboration?

I can tell you that you should not use anything that actually says Harley Davidson, or any of their other trademarks. They defend their trademarks vigorously. Our local dealer had the bar and shield painted on the roof of his dealership so it could be seen from the air, and Harley threw a fit, and that was for the busiest dealer in the state!

Bruce, see post 921 in Coop's thread. There is a Harley knife in there. I would suggest 6061 aluminum, with anodized flat black scales, and orange anodized bolsters. Black leather sheath with anodized aluminum insert.

I would think leather wrapped would be cool. Kind of like how a steering wheel is wrapped, with a seem stitched down the back.

Willie, that knife looks so good with the orange/blacke scales. You have me thinking about aluminum but I've no way to anodize it. Polished aluminum and G-10 might just do it.

Like J. Hoffman says, I can't use the logo but they can't stop me from using the colors.
Funny you should ask about our son, he and I are attending a one day layout class next month for engraving. I'm not ever going to have time to engrave but He will. The kids got some drawing abilities. We plan to collaborate allot in the coming years.

Bruce, there are likely anodizing shops in your area. I had a pair of bicycle hubs done for about $50.00. It's not that expensive. The look is all about how the aluminum is prepped. I envision brushed aluminum bolsters in orange, and bead blasted scales in black. Of course it is your knife:).

I'm sad that no one seems to like my idea :( I need a hug.

See ya soon, Bruce!

Deeply etched and nickel plated would look cool especially on the inlayed shield. I just don't have time on this one.
Meet ya next Saturday!

Bruce, I would think anything you make would be snapped up, especially priced for bikers as apposed to high end collectors. I have found the Harley guys just really like the chain stuff. Looking forward to seeing it.

OK, its done. Thanks everybody for their input. This was a fun one.
Remember its a boot knife so to avoid a big thick heavy knife in the boot I opted to hollow grind one complete side on a 10" wheel and put only one scale on. The double edge is also hollow ground but on a 24" wheel. It looks nearly flat but its not. The liner material is white and orange plastic sign material and black G-10 scale. The chain is forged from a Duckworth primary chain so I thinned down and polished a plate from the chain and riveted it on as a shield.
Boot sheath to follow,
Thanks for following along. :)
