Any hope of salvaging or start over?

James my neighbour owns a large cabinet shop . I send him fresh fish ,he cuts my wood to scales when i need perfection cuts. I also get any decent scraps when i want them. Good neighbours are great to have around lol

hellgap, I'm a big fan of the barter system! That's great that you and him can help each other out. If I get off my butt and contact that fella I talked about, maybe I'll just give him a nice little hunter or something as a goodwill gesture.

If you wanted to, you could make do with what you have. Since the front pin will be so close to the front of the scale, avoid any sloping down towards the knife in the front. Rather, thin your scales down and round off the front of the scale. The scale doesn't have to come all the way to the finger guard. For instance:

I like that! What material did you use for the scales?

hellgap, got it!:D I'm pretty hard on myself as far as spelling but I don't monitor others spelling. Unless it's someone asking about a muzzel break or something...:D

Yeah, I could have been done (or at least closer to done) but I didn't want to give up without a fight. At least I now have some options for future reference (and I might even add spacers ON PURPOSE :D) but this set is going to be put in the scrap pile. I have some small (like 3") Bowie-style letter openers I picked up from Jantz at the Tulsa show. The scrap might just work for handle practice pieces.

Nick, drilling before anything else is backwards from what I've read before but damn if it doesn't make the most sense after this episode!

Glad you like it, friend. Those handles are jade G10. It's similar to micarta, but made with a glass fiber weave and resin vs. linen or canvas. I won a block of it off of these forums a while back and cut some scales out for this knife.

In fact, I need to pop these scales off, clean up a few mistakes and get this knife given away on the forums like I promised to do a while back :D. Things have been a bit busy and this knife had to go on the back burner. Hopefully in a couple of months I can finish it up to give away.

Man, that's a slick look'n wharnie (sp?) Nathan! Love that jade G11. I've got a big chunk from Jim... but haven't used it yet.

, there's no rule saying you should drill first, but it's how I do it. If you flatten the scales first, then drill... you can put pins through the handle, and trace the outline of the tang AND figure out what you want the front end of the scale to look like.

Here's a set of pics I put together quite a few years back for some guys that bought blade blanks from me. This little project was as simple as you can get... but I think the pictures explain far more than my words will.

Hopefully it will help a little :)

I want to add that I fully realize there are things in that little tutorial that could have been done more precisely... as far as drill/reaming, fixturing, etc.... But the project was for guys that had NEVER made a knife or handle for one... so it was all about keeping it simple.

Also, there seems to be this common misconception that I temporarily glued the scales TO THE BLADE with the hot glue... I did NOT. I used the hot glue to hold the knife down while sanding the opposite side of the handle. :)

Remember... I made it simple! It's harder to screw up that way (I should know, HA ;) ).

I read that handle tutorial wow very excellent. I do mine alot lik that now. I had a few mistakes like i used 3 min epoxcy not enough time lmao. im using 5 but i like the 15 min stuff. I also bought a bunch of 1 hour at the dollar store slow acting seems ok. I tape all my blades no matter now to prevent cuts lol. Nick i do the handle a little different but ends up simular to yours but not as nice. I will start sanding to higher grit cuz i do see the difference. My buffer does a nice job but can also cause pieces to break out or break off even if you apply to much pressure. The wood you were working was that amboina or maple burl . Why did you drill the dots in the wood?? I learned alot thanks nick

Sorry i went back re read the drilling part . Ok i have not been doing that but i ruff up with 80 grit paper. Is it a must to do that when glueing.
