Any love for the GEC Farmboy? (Warning: Contains Grandpa knife story)....

Great story great looking knives I do however have one complaint this thread just cost me $90.24 (red jigged bone):D

LOL

I apologize Randy for any undo pressure this thread may have applied that influenced your spending.
Those red jigged bone Farmboys are so nice  I'm sure your "one complaint" will be completely resolved shortly after receiving one. :D
Let us know what you think about yours when you get a chance. :)

Me too! I'd been thinking about adding a red jigged bone to go with my antique yellow, and this thread made me pull the trigger a couple days ago. :D

Well, I got the knife a week ago and it's everything I hoped for! Some of the best Ebony I've received from GEC and I love the blade set on this knife. The clip is nice and tall and the Spey is as full as possible while still sitting nice and low in the frame. A great knife all around, I think I may have to track down it's TC cousin...

Love the clip blade on the GEC15, so after seeing btb01 and redsparrows pics I had to order one, a rust red. Now waiting patiently.
Would love to see more TC variant pics.

They really did a nice job on both blade shape for this knife but the clip is just perfect! It's easily my favorite clip point shape I've owned.

What would be perfect would be a TC with Charlie's slightly fuller Spey blade and this clip. Make it in soupbone and call me Happy Pappy!

I don't recall any other spey blade TC or boy's knife? You mean the same blade with the swedges?

The latest run of TC ("A New Day ") was a Spey that Charlie specifically asked to be a bit taller so it would last longer after years of sharpening. It's an awesome Spey and packs about the limit of steel that you can get into a #15 frame.

Well, I got my second Farm Boy in the other day. Figured I needed a Rust Red Jigged Bone to go with my beloved Antique Yellow.

We got together with my Maternal family last night and I was talking with my Grandpa who is turning 80 soon about life and other things. I was sharpening a cousin's knife and my Grandpa reached into his pocket (he's always carried a CASE CV Peanut with yellow Delrin scales) and them remembered that he misplaced his pocket knife a while back and was still meaning to get a new one. I happened to have my CASE CV Mini Trapper with yellow Delrin scales in my pocket at the time and was ecstatic to be able to give it him as a hopeful replacement for his misplaced Peanut. He exclaimed that it was very similar to his Case in both size and carbon steel (which "mikght stain but takes a much keener edge than stain free steel") and put it in his pocket after some protests. The ironic thing here is that it was my Grandpa's yellow Delrin Peanut that has attracted me to the classic Case knives and the reason for picking up the knife in the first place. This Grandpa has given me his knives over the years as he declares he no longer needs them (I have his old Buck 112 and his Schrade hunting fixed blade) and it felt awesome to be able to give one back. Easily twice as fun as getting the knife in the first place. He bought me my first sharpening stone some 20 years ago (a pocket Arkansas that I still have a piece of) and taught me to sharpen free hand. He always warned: only sharpen your knife when you absolutely need to otherwise you'll wear it away too quickly. I guess not all of his advise stuck ;).

Anyway...

So here I am the morning after and I decide I should probably pick up another Case Mini Trapper. After looking for a while I head down one tangent then another and I realize that a barehead Ebony trapper would be awesome. After a few searches (still wanting a Case) I give up thinking that a barehead ebony Mini Trapper has never been made and I'd have to forget about ever owning one. During lunch today I was perusing the "The Knife of 2015" thread and saw btb01's post with a GEC Farmboy in it! I remembered seeing these in Ebony at one time but knew they were made a few years back so I was most likely out of luck. I search my favorite sources and once again CK comes through with 1 left in stock! Possibly the last Ebony Farmboy on the internet. Needless to say, it's headed to me.

Though I have a few #15's, I find the Farmboy sits in a unique position being the only #15 non-barlow that I can think of that has 2 full size blades. A pretty useful looking knife if you ask me.

So, anyone else a fan of this GEC "Mini Trapper"? Any pictures or stories would be greatly appreciated.

I can't wait to CF and CE mine...

(shamelessly borrowed the picture from Collector Knives as I bought the last one...)

I actually saw this knife on CK and almost ordered it. It was when I was ordering my 71. I changed my mind when I realized I wouldn't be happy with a two blade. If I could find this knife in a single spear, long pull, or perhaps the drop point like from a Sodbuster with a swedge, I'd probably be done looking at anything else. I'd have to get 10 of these. Lol.

By the way, I'm totally serious.

There's only one two blade I love in this pattern, the Camillus TL-29. That Spey, while nice, is not a screwdriver.

I like the multiple blades I have a case trapper. I use the clip for everyday cutting like wires and straps and such. The Spey is my go to apple blade and food blade.

I have always liked that farmboy but typically look at the sfo knives. Buuuuuttt I just gave in and ordered a rust red. Thanks for giving me the bug.

Well I too was inspired to pick up one of these and BOY am I glad I did. This is one of the most satisfactory GEC knives in my collection. The blade combination, walk and talk, jigging, coloration and weight are all wonderful and it easily surpasses a number of similar GEC's I own.

BTW I think the so called deeper Spey blade on the TC Barlow is deeper than previous TC barlows. It appears identical to the Spey blade on the farm boy except for the pull, and the clipped point at the tip.

Just got my Rust Red farmboy today ,and all I can say is "WOW!", this is a great knife thanks for posting pics and starting this thread. I am definitely glad I got one and have ordered another one as well. I will post some pics when there is better lighting outside.

Ok, ok. I dislike indoor lighting, tomorrow I will post proper pics in natural lighting.

Ok, I just came across this thread and it seems like a good place to ask a question I have. I'm relatively new to this site, though I have been lurking around it for a while now, so if this should be re-directed please let me know!

My dilemma is I am looking for a traditional folder (my first traditional folder actually), 1-2 blades, carbon steel, and MUST be fairly comfortable in the pocket. The issue I'm having is that I have virtually no access to decent traditional folders at any store around where I live. I had planned on picking out a Case from Bass Pro which is a couple hours drive away, only to find out that they only carry stainless. I just would hate to order something online, not having handled it, and realize when I get it that its too big for me to comfortably pocket carry, and therefore not get the use I would like out of it. I had been thinking on a Case Mini Copperlock, solely because it's slim, as well as the Mini Trapper.

I am loving the look of these TC Farmboys, and am wondering how it compares in size to the Mini Trapper? Do you guys find it comfortable in the pocket? Also, any suggestions on some other options (and where to look for them) that meet my criteria?

Sorry for the rookie question, I've been driving myself mad trying to decide. Any input is much appreciated! Thanks!

I've only briefly handled a Case Mini Trapper (and do not own one), but from what I recall, the closed length is fairly similar, though I believe the Farm Boy is slimmer than the Case.
