Any love for the GEC Farmboy? (Warning: Contains Grandpa knife story)....

The store chain you mentioned carries both CV (carbon) and Stainless versions of the popular Case knife patterns. You should be able to order what you want online and have it shipped to the store closest to you for no shipping charges. That way you can handle it and examine it before you leave the store with it.

Thanks Jeff 😉

Just wanted to see if I could get a preview of what's coming. Appreciate the pic I hope to join you tomorrow

Ok, I just came across this thread and it seems like a good place to ask a question I have. I'm relatively new to this site, though I have been lurking around it for a while now, so if this should be re-directed please let me know!

My dilemma is I am looking for a traditional folder (my first traditional folder actually), 1-2 blades, carbon steel, and MUST be fairly comfortable in the pocket. The issue I'm having is that I have virtually no access to decent traditional folders at any store around where I live. I had planned on picking out a Case from Bass Pro which is a couple hours drive away, only to find out that they only carry stainless. I just would hate to order something online, not having handled it, and realize when I get it that its too big for me to comfortably pocket carry, and therefore not get the use I would like out of it. I had been thinking on a Case Mini Copperlock, solely because it's slim, as well as the Mini Trapper.

I am loving the look of these TC Farmboys, and am wondering how it compares in size to the Mini Trapper? Do you guys find it comfortable in the pocket? Also, any suggestions on some other options (and where to look for them) that meet my criteria?

Sorry for the rookie question, I've been driving myself mad trying to decide. Any input is much appreciated! Thanks!

Ai would say the Case Mini Trapper is a significantly smaller knife in a few ways. They are similar in length but the Case handle and blades are both much slimmer. The GEC is a real work knife and the Case reminds me of a very capable Gentleman's knife.

Both are fantastic knives and the Case Mini Trapper is a true classic. If you're looking for a nice pocket knife, I'd start with the Case. If you're looking for a harder working knife, I'd start with the GEC.

I've only briefly handled a Case Mini Trapper (and do not own one), but from what I recall, the closed length is fairly similar, though I believe the Farm Boy is slimmer than the Case.

I agree, although I don't know that I'd describe the Mini Trapper as significantly smaller than the Farm Boy-- just less robust within a similarly-sized frame, with the slimmer profile and blades as described above.

Some (poor-er) images to illustrate.

(To paraphrase Gandalf, one must do what what can in the time given us, in this instance pre-dawn light. :D)

The Mini Trapper is slightly longer...

... but slightly slimmer in both height and girth.

Other blades (My Mini Trapper sports a wharncliffe blade instead of the spey blade standard to the pattern):

As Macchina says, they are both fantastic knives. For me, they tend to carry 'heavy,' but only in comparison with the smaller knives I usually pocket. Their two full-sized blades in relatively compact packages are a treat.

The Day's Work/Farm Boy has more blade real estate, stronger pulls and more authoritative snap ("Walk and Talk"), and seems ready-er for hard work. In which I am agreeing with Macchina again. :) On the other hand, I doubt you'd find many hard-working people who haven't found a Mini Trapper tested and true.

Hope this helps.

Well my memory must be deceiving me. I could have sworn that the Case Mini Trapper I had handled seemed thicker than the Farm Boy, but based on Macchina's description and pertinux's hard evidence, it seems I was wrong.

~P., I love that yellow Day's Work. Good looking knife!!

Thanks for the input everyone! Always seems to be a helpful and knowledgeable crowd on here. I'm still waiting to hear back from management at the local BPS. If they're able to get me in a CV then I will be going with the Case. If it turns out that I need something harder working, it will just be a good excuse to buy another. I can see this becoming an addiction fairly quickly.

Mini-Trapper (top) 3.5" L x .76" H
Farmboy (bottom) 3.4" L x .88" H (kick filed to lower blade)

Mini-Trapper (bottom) .54 W
Farmboy (top) .55 W
(better camera angle would show the mini trapper's handle is wider over all while the farmer has a swell on the end)

Farmboy (bottom) main blade - Clip

nmorris, I believe you've made a good choice because these are two of the best pocket knives available today and virtually identical in size. There is a slight variation in handle shape but the most substantial differences are:
price, the Case is about 1/2 the cost of the GEC
blade material Case S.S. vs. GEC 1095
and main blade shape Clip vs. California clip

If you find a need for a slightly harder working knife you might consider the GEC 77. Let us know how your choice works out for you.

Thanks so much for the input, these comparisons are exactly what I was after. I will post when I finally come to a decision to let yous know how i make out!

Just got delivery confirmation that my rust red farmer just showed up at my house ..... not that I was refreshing the USPS web page of anything ....

Very nice looking knife, color is exactly what I was looking for. Centering is perfect and so is the snap. Like the all steel....this one feels like my TC without the large bolster.

Those red bones look fantastic... You're tempting me into a second one...

Well I have been using mine, I dehorned it and deglossed the bolsters and blades, smooth to the touch and in the pocket. This is a great pattern!
