I am really looking forward to the next Mule especially the M4 and the Chinese one so I am anxious to hear if there is any news on that front?

I thought there was going to be news the end of Sept but I do understand that these types of things almost always take longer than planned.

The M4 Mule is awesome as a steel snob and to see what really good hish speed steel can do in a knife blade.

However I think the 9Cr13 (I think) Chinese steel Mule has the potential to be the most interesting. I would bet it will be made in larger numbers so everyone can get one and be quite cheap as well. This is a real opportunity for the chinese to show how far they have come.

Also if there are lots of cheap mules the modded Mules are going to be amazing!

I like mine as neck knives though with great OST sheaths and no handle so they can be worn on a ball chain under a T-Shirt.

MULES RULE!!!:D

We're getting very close. I'll post a new thread as soon as we're good to go. We're finishing up some logistical issues now. There were a few challenges the first time around, we're trying to do our best to resolve those.

Hang in there.

Thanks Kristi ,I feel like a little terrier yapping for a treat with this knife but I am terrified I will check in and it will be "oh that was last week we just sold the last ones"!

Just what I think- don't want to miss out on steels I wouldn't try for a long time otherwise.

I know M4 is very wear resistant but is it murder to sharpen and how tough is it compared to the harder use steels?.
Is it sort of like a cpm INFI type steel?.

These are the questions that the Mule project is all about. Who knew that 52100 when hardened to 62-65 would be easy to sharpen to a very fine razor edge and hold up well? And to down side would rust easy if not oiled? Great project and am very much looking for the Mule 2 to come out so we have something to test the 1 against.

It's really late now - I actually logged on just to see if there was news on the Mule 2, and there I have it :)

a...l...m...o...s...t.......t...h...e...r...e....

promise ;)

If I could tell you right now, believe me I would.

Just wanted to add my waiting status to the list. I was waiting for something that has better rust resistance

I am really looking forward to the chinese one surprisingly because it is not that exotic.

I am going to try to keep this thread on the front page as a way to ensure I don't miss the Mule and everyone else can check it out for updates.

I LOVE my 52100 mule. The design works exceptionally well as a neck knife with Eric's sheaths. The Chinese ones are definitely going to be users and i hope there won't be a 2 knife limit on those. Considering how many Byrds they can crank out there should be a few more mules from that plant than golden.

How about an Italian mule in that Nsomething or other steel?

Which Eric's sheaths did you get? On/Scene Tac ?
Did you have to send him your knife? I'd love to get a good kydex sheath, haven't had time yet to make my own crappy one :)

I take it if your using it as a neck knife its developed a massaive patina?.
Has it rusted yet?.
Mines really bad for forming a patina yet it hasnt rusted yet although ive heard it does easy.
Ive got some BBs in 52100 which ive handled a lot yet they havent developed any rust or started to patina weird.

How strong is M4?
I know it has amongst the best wear resitance in the knife world but does it tend to chip bend is there a scale out there comparing its toughness to other steels?.
If not what sort of other steels would you compare it to for toughness?.
Thanks.

The chinese one does sound interesting, I wonder if it means there might be byrd fixed blades in the future?

In addition to the type of steel, and how it was heat treated, the finish on a knife also determines how fast / resistant the steel is going to be. A ball bearing would be heat treated differently, and to different hardnesses as well as finished differently than a knife. Mirror polishes typically resist rust longer than , say, a simple 600 grit, or satin finish. Joe

Thanks, Unsub, for letting me know about this!

My MULE is one of my all-time favorite spyderco products.
