Any of you guys longboard?

Anyone have any experience with Kahuna Creations Hydro 44 Pro Shredder? http://www.kahunacreations.com/longboards/performance/hydro.html

I would also appreciate opinions on Bamboo vs. adjustable Big Sticks.

My first board was a Kahuna, definitely think their build quality is better than alot of sector 9's etc. Bamboo is awesome and provides a flexy ride. After riding a Loaded Dervish (bamboo) and a LongBoardLarry Komodo (bamboo) riding anything else feels weird. Albeit I phased out of downhill (the flex in the bamboo wont be good for stability) and moved to flatland dancing/street tricks.

Here's a cool vid showcasing the Loaded Dervish and alot of dancing/free style tricks

Guyon (or anyone who would be kind enough to comment), you guys had me spending hours last night chasing this around on the web- could you give a little rundown on what a beginner should look for, what the different size boards are for, etc.?

If that's too large to tackle, I'm about 220 (working on getting that down a bit), not interested in tricks or extreme downhills, more about cruisin', commuting, and getting in shape. I used to rollerskate the hills in Hollywood and used a stick for braking, stability, and security (they were dangerous places in those days), so the whole idea of land paddling is just too cool to me.

TIA, Mike

I'm the wrong dude to ask. I just got into it all pretty recently.

My son got a skateboard, and I got tired of watching him ride alone. So I started looking at longboards. In a moment of inspiration, I typed "longboard" into my local Craigslist, and lo' and behold, I found a teenager selling off the stock from his (former) online shop. I wound up picking up a complete pintail on the cheap. Then because it was such a durn good deal, I bought a complete cruiser off of him. These were both Miramar decks with Randal trucks and Abec wheels. After some time over at Silverfish, I got antsy for a drop deck, emailed Soda Factory, and had a 10-ply in the mail within a week.

You can cruise on just about any board, methinks, so it's mostly going to be about the right flex (some boards are designed to flex, not necessarily a bad thing) and finding a good set-up with the trucks, risers, and wheels so you don't get wheel bite (the wheel biting into the deck). If you want intel, I recommend heading over to Silverfish forum and reading. That board is not always overly welcoming to newb questions, so you might spend a little time lurking and reading first.

As for land paddling, I got that Kahuna Creations adjustable paddle (PM me for a discount code if you get a Kahuna land paddle), and I ordered a solid wooden "Thruster" land paddle on clearance elsewhere. I wound up buying a KC foot to put on the wooden paddle.

Thanks guys. I think I'll give Craigslist a look before I do anything els. I just went to all (3) local boardshops and none of them even knew anything about the Big Sticks, and only one of them had anybody who knew anything more than "buy what you like". After three days on the web, I have a pretty good idea what I want, but I'm really looking forward to checking out Silverfish.

I have been wanting to get an arbor blunt which I think they just continued.

It was koa wood. Need a stiff board, I am a big boy (250 lbs). Any suggestions?

Drift trike looks like a good way to die. Recognize that hill in salt lake.
dont get arbor please every one i know that rides arbor broke snapped or destroyed them under normal use there just not that good user boards there good if you want to hang it on a wall

Check out never summer longboards. made in Colorado. i have a "soldier" downhill and a "concept" but have had all kinds of longboards. I ride o-tang "in heat" wheels as well! I have been skating since I was about 7 or 8 years old.

silverfishlongboarding.com rocks

I love longboards. minis, pins, squash tail, etc. Lots of great options out there, but just like cutlery, you need to figure out what you want out of it. i've owned several over the last 15 years or so, but I'm down to a couple of minis:

lMy grail board (which I already have) longboardlarry humu 26", bennet 110s, retro zig zag 65mm with abec 7 bearings, that need some love. Great for carving, cruising, and my dog loves it too. I am the old guy in the neighborhood with the dog pulling me, with the kids on bikes/scooters, etc. The turning radius is great, and it can be pumped easily. Not a speed board by any means though, but one can easily scrub speed by carving constantly

I am thinking about a Rayne Timeline or Honey amp 32" model. both seem great for carving or giant slalom.

I had a 42" custom soul carver for a while (squash tail), older G&S park board, G&S pin tail (nice) but sold them off for a board to cruise with the pooch.

I have a flexdex 21" mini slater for fun (my 4 yr old son laid claim to this recently) which I used in SD on the boardwalk which is fun too.

The nice thing is that custom boards are cheaper than custom blades, but don't expect them to last as long

Just got into the hobby a few months ago and really enjoy it. Just curious if anyone on here is into cruising! Its really put a hurting on my wallet though. Ive started selling knives to fund my longboard purchases

I just dropped 300 + on a new board tonight. Bought a Nelson Tempest with 86a 75mm orangatangs, paris 180's, and some risers. Should be an awesome setup for sliding, freestyle, and some lighter dowhill stuff!

Keep the responses coming guys! Its really cool to see who longboards! :)

Watchoo mean "downhill", Rufus? Around my house, you say, "board" and you are talking surf board.

My wife uses a long board. My son has modern boards. She surfs here in San Diego. My son lives on Oahu and surfs North Shore.

I tested out a landyacht and was pretty impressed. I am just getting older, and don't take a fall as well as I used to. I just took a spill on my inline skates with my 7 year old a few days ago, it HURT.

Slide gloves, knee pads and elbow pads will make falling worlds better. I don't know how I ever boarded without them.

Also if you wear a thick pair of pants and a hoodie it will really help with the wipeouts

Also check out Hillbilly butt pads, Bohn buttsavers or triple 8 bumsavers to complete your "fall down not go boom" wardrobe- oh, and don't forget a helmet! Head injuries are usually worse than some lost skin and bruizes.

I'm already old enough to prefer looking stupid to feeling stupid and hurting.

Just bought another board. I'm a mess. Got a

Never Summer drop through Heist with the stiff flex
+ Paris 180 trucks
+ bones reds + spacer
+ Orangatang 86a in Heats

Should be a great cruising and carving setup! I might get a big stick and try land paddling on it.

Man my board is gathering some dust :-( I was spoiled with amazing parking garages everywhere when I lived in San Francisco.

I have a Landyachtz Dropspeed. Bears, Orangatangs, Bones. Love it!

Longboarding is awesome. I'm taking a break until I get a new helmet... I tend to push my myself way too far when going downhill.

I got the Hillbilly Butt Pads and they rock! Serious protection but not nearly as bulky as I thought they might be. They fit under my (baggy) shorts with no problem and my wife and her friend didn't even notice I had them on.

I ended up going with the Kahuna Hydro and adjustable Bid Stick- with the Silverfish discount code (thanks Guyon) it was a deal I couldn't pass up- less than the cost of many boards alone. Great CS, answered all my questions promptly and I ordered Monday and got it Thursday!

I was a semi pro skater in 2001. Never got on a longboard but have been thinking about it recently.

Peter R thats awesome. Its so cool to see who all skates on here. You should give longboarding a try. I used to short board/ trick skate when I was younger but just never really got into it. I hated how you couldn't just coast down the street very well. I always liked cruising better than tricks.

My younger brother is getting into longboarding, I have a local outdoors shop that sells some boards along with the big sticks (along with knives.... this is a knife forum). I've been wanting to pick one up, but they are a bit expensive for me right now, its a ton of fun though!
