I'm actually happy you did it, so we could see what exactly it takes to render one rather fubar'ed. So no, just consider it good knife testing!

The "large heavy" Ka-Bar Bowie (model # 1277) is actually, in my opinion, misnamed. Yes, it's large--but it has a full flat grind, which makes it much lighter in the blade than a lot of Bowies of comparable length. It's also quite a decent slicer, with that profile. Also, take a look at that long clip point. I actually think it's a remarkably "fast"-moving big blade. If I had to try to make a serviceable, reliable fighting Bowie out of any production blade, I think I'd start out with one of these. Remove or modify the handle, add a guard, and sharpen that clip point.

Return of the JD, I thought of doing the same actually, and removing the black coating.
I looked at the destruction test noss4 did of the kabar to see what kind of tang it had, its a pretty short stick tang, about 1/2 to 3/4 the handle length I believe.
How would you put a new handle on it?

Have a 8"tanto and the standard USMC models, the both work great. They are my kindling makers. Ill try to get some pics up. Dialup

As far as replacing the handle I would probably use a good two part epoxy to secure it to a micarta block and maybe use one pin in the handle toward the top.

I have the Ka-Bar Large Dozier folder, $28.00 bucks and is supersharp, big pocket knife but flat w/ 1/8th inch thick blade. I love it so much, I plan to get another.

My brother took the coating off the kukri, he likes it a lot.
I may have to do that with the new handle, I want to try with wood though, a more traditional look.

I have the Heavy bowie and the standard USMC. The Heavy bowie is basicaly like a shorter thicker bladed version of a 12" machete and I never gave it much use, but the USMC is awesome all around and I used it almost every day since i got it.

I'd have to see the tang, but my best guess is along the same lines. I'd probably go for hand-made "micarta" (epoxy-soaked cloth, compressed), with a pin through it. You might also try a piece of antler, also with epoxy and a pin.

There is only one Ka-Bar and that is those knives based on the original design. The rest is just "production knife company" junk to stay in the market. Might as well take $70 cash and set it on fire.
