Any one know the laws?

Simple question. The answer:

Title 18 § 908 "Offensive weapons."

Any bomb, grenade, machine gun, sawed-off shotgun with a barrel less than 18 inches, firearm specially made or specially adapted for concealment or silent discharge, any blackjack, sandbag, metal knuckles, dagger, knife, razor or cutting instrument, the blade of which is exposed in an automatic way by switch, push-button, spring mechanism, or otherwise, or other implement for the infliction of serious bodily injury which serves no common lawful purpose.

This really should have gone in Knife Laws, I guess - but hey, it took me 30 seconds to find the statute.

That settled, tell us about your swords!

that dosen't exactly help because there is a lawfull purpose, SCA and sword classes. the problume I am haveing is that I don't want to walk down town with a sword on my belt going to a class or meeting and get arested for some bogus crap.

My swords? I have a few my grandfather made, very one from the local shop and almost every sword form KnightsEdge.com. How ever I refuse to buy "theSword of Darkness I" because it looks like shit >.< How ever I do have the Sword of Darkness II :D

I diden't put it in the Knife laws because swords and knifes are two seprat things O.o

Yea that sure would be bogus if you walk down the street and get arrested.

Honestly could you tell me why you want to carry a sword besides the honor excuse?

Officer: "Why are you carrying a sword?"
JokerGod: "I am using it to maintain my honor and scare my foes away."

Sounds like a winner.

Hunting, SCA, Classes, Honor, show off great work, reenactments ect ect.

Why shoulden't I be allowed? for centurys the right to carry a sword was one thast was chareshed by every man, why is that right being taken form me? Safty? But yet i can get a permit and cary a gun on me at all times?

I would suggest using spell check. even if english is not your first language there is no reason to spell everything wrong.

I still call "Ninja"

Taking it to a class, hunting, or for reenactments - that's what bags are for. Hunters don't wear their gear and carry their rifle over their shoulder when they shop for underwear - why would you carry a sword? As to laws pertaining to concealed (or open!) carry - firearms are more in tune with the modern conception of self-defense than swords are, by a large margin. What are you going to do, challenge a mugger with a gun to a duel?

As for why that right (if it ever was a right) is being taken away from you, well, that's a pretty big question with lots of tangents in legislation, social science, psychology, and politics. Suffice it to say that 1) You're not in a society where a sane person would come up to you, smack you with a glove, and draw their sword, 2) The sword is now essentially obsolete as a weapon - the days of "honorable" one-on-one fights is gone, and, barring total nuclear war, I doubt you'll hear the term "fix bayonets" used literally on a battlefield anytime soon. And a good street assailant won't let you get that thing half out of its scabbard before you've got a razor blade, or cheap folding knife, or even a sharpened chopstick in your back.

So you're left with honor at this point. Would you wear it as a symbol of military service? Would you wear it as a reminder of great battles fought and won? An indicator of social status? As a billboard for your "manliness?" If it's for your grandfather's sake - is the supposed "honor" of wearing a sword in this day and age (nonexistent, in my opinion) worth the dishonor of spending a night in jail on a misdemeanor charge, or at worst, a few years for possession and intent to use a deadly weapon? And in some jurisdictions, possession in public places of an object defined as a deadly or offensive weapon is firm evidence of intent to use that weapon.

I don't think you'll find anyone here who wouldn't be grinning their ass off at the chance to wear swords in public - it's just that we recognize how useless it would be as a defensive measure, and how meaningless it would be as a symbolic one.

I too think it would be great to carry the weapon of my choice. I would far rather carry a 7-8 inch Bowie type fixed blade over a gun or a sword. I grin my butt off every trip I make to Texas Renaissance Festival or either of the 2 other similar fantasy faires in Texas. We go in full gear. I am semi-pirate-ish as my Jody Samson Seaward sword does not fit any historical period and I wear my steel proudly displayed to be admired. People expect to see such weapons at faire. The drawing and exposure of the blades is strongly discouraged though most are only 'peace-tied' with a bit of string there are few problems. All the injuries I have ever seen have been directly related to sword salespersons handling their own products.
I have bounced along the edges of polite. Now it is getting to the 'grow up' and let go of childish notions level. I am starting to be reminded of when I was young and foolish. If this is something you truely need to experience to learn, don't whine about how unfair it all is when the rest of the world sees it differently. If the student is not ready, the teacher will still show up. Could be a harsh lesson.
"Put down the weapon!"
"It is not a weapon... it is my granpappy's Sword of Honor!...(schwing!) See?"
POW! POW! POW!
You have been told.
"You buy 'em books, they eat the paper..."

Whatever happened to Omega-Doom and his shark killing aspirations? HE was pretty entertaining.

Just curious, what would you hunt with a sword?

A bear would just so much as let you cut him as let you be dinner.

A deer runs fast

A moose is freakin huge

A pig, well if you can find someone that allows swords to hunt pigs go for it

A shark? That is another no no

A tiger would just bite your jugular and then you would be dead

A small squirrel? You think that is easy, your wrong

Maybe a domesticated animal like a cat or dog but i'm sure if you did that i believe most people here would personally like to "meet" you.

Bear would not be as hard as you think. But i mostly hunt Deer. I use swords becuase its harder, that dosen't meen I stand there and wave my sword around a few times, there are other ways to hunt with a sword. Sutch as set a trap, put bate in it, creat an area that would only allow the deer to run one way, then throw the sword at the deer. And for all the hunters, you know that if you shoot it in the lungs it wont run very far befor dieing, but if you add a few pounds form a sword sticking out of its side it will fall faster then with out air in its lungs.

The problume is every has become so used ot not seeing them they forget that befor guns man did use swords and normal bows (Not the new ones that any 5 year old can pull)

Oh so you just simply throw the sword at the deer?:jerkit:

I'd like to see a five year old pull back a 55 lb. bow anyday.

Hunting animals with bladed weapons for sport has been going on since the origin of sport hunting. It is rare today with the exception of taking hogs with a knife.

Yes i know hog hunting with a knife is somewhat common but come on. When was the last time you saw a deer be killed with a thrown sword?

last corn season acualy, I went out with my unkle and we got 3 in the first few weeks befor I left.

Next season I will take a camera with me. I never thought twice about it not being common for people. But i guess I am more tradishanal then I thought.

Yes, indeed farmers do hate crop damage. I'm still not aware of a state that doesn't regulate the method, quantity, and the licensing of land owner hunters. There are 0 states that would allow you to set a spear trap with a sword. 0. None. Doesn't matter if its private land on the moon, those things can kill people stupid enough to wander into them and if you actually use such a contraption, please stop.
