I am a huge fan of the stories of Middle Earth. It's a long story, but it played an extremely important role in my young life. I always thought, given the the historical uses of personal knives in the field and in old inns and pubs, that he left out much of the story in never describing any of the knife uses that would have had to happen. I was essentially living in the woods at the time, and preparing all my own foods, and I knew how much I relied on my knives. So as sort of a tribute to the story and its significance to me, I was inspired to do an extensive art project inspired by the story, but adding in important scenes I imagined in the story years ago. The overall project involves knives made bt various friends who are knife makers in order to add in more diversity, as well as the fact that I cannot afford all the knives I would want, and some are being made and loaned to me for the project. However, the inspiration actually came one day while using one of my Fiddleback Forge knives to slice some bacon and cut up some mushrooms. So, since the idea is sort of all Andy's fault, I thought it would be fun to look at how I would approach the same project if I could ever afford all of the Fiddleback knives I would like to use in the project. In trying to figure a total, it looks like I will only need about 10K to buy the knives I am lacking. But I was just curious if anyone else was a fan, that might have some better ideas than the models I chose for the various characters, and thought the discussion might be fun for a few of us anyway...

The Hobbit

Young Bilbo

Kitchen – Padre, Gaucho, K.E. Bushie, Shank (need)

Personal – Handyman (have) or Monarch (need)

The dinner with the dwarves has lots of possibilities

Dwarves – Wasp, Maverick, Drop Point Maverick, Rebel, Renegade, Scorpion (need)

The Trilogy

Old Bilbo – Same as the kitchen in the Hobbit and still in the kitchen, just in different uses and locations.

Frodo – Bear Cub (have) or Esquire (need)

Sam – Raptor (need)

Merry – Wingman (have)

Pippin – Bushboot (have)

Farmer Maggot's kitchen – Woodsman, Gaucho, K.E. Bushie (need)

Aragorn – Bull Frog Bowie (need)

Boromir – DPM (need)

Legolas – Kephart (need)

Gimli – Wasp (need)

Lord Denethor – Scorpion (need)

Faramir – swedged Asp (need)

The Feast at Edoras would offer lots of opportunities for pretty much every other Fiddleback model in existance...

I'm a huge fan and have read the books and watched the movies many times over. I'll look over your list and weigh in later. If you have never heard this it is Tolkien narrating Chapter 1 of Book I, The Fellowship of the Ring as well as singing “Sam’s Rhyme of the Troll” from Chapter 12, “The Flight to the Ford”.

Thanks, I had never heard that. But I have read all four books multiple times, and seen the movies, being much annoyed at how they left out the end and thus losing much of the moral of the story. I have them audio book, and often listen to them while I edit photos.

I actually took my (at the time) wife to see "Fellowship of the Ring" on the night of our wedding anniversary.

Mistake.

We've been divorced for 8 years now...

Brian, my only comments to your list if I were looking at pairing characters with knives is taking into consideration the relative size of each race and their traditional weapons of choice. For example, a Woodsman would likely come up to Farmer Maggot's knee and the dwarves would likely only carry the "bigger" knife of any particular model, i.e. Big Sneaky, BC SR...

Oh, and I cannot possibly shark anything this week, my truck decided it needed a new alternator worse than I needed the Nessmuk I wanted... so I am going to go play with the Wingman I just got in. Don't you guys get caught up in thoughts of the story and miss the 3 o'clock post. I don't wish to be blamed for anybody missing something :)

Damn, I take it she wasn't a fan? I loved it when Lisa took me to see it. It wasn't our anniversary, but I would have been totally fine if it was :D

I get your point there. My thinking was that in the "mighty dish of mushrooms and bacon" scene, the Woodsman would take the place of a large chef's knife. I personally have one with a 14 inch blade :)

Yes, I know...but the thing is that smaller knives are much easier to show the details on, so I was thinking smaller anywhere I could make it work out.. It is still a work in progress. The journey doesn't start until September, so I still have time to sort some things out a little better...

I first read the books somewhere around 4th grade and have reread them something like 10 times over the years. Huge Tolkien fan. (Hated The Hobbit, Jackson screwed the pooch for a huge CGI mess & money grab) I'd love to own or make a functional replica of some of the books famous weapons someday.

I would also happily lend you that eucalyptus Kephart for a photo shoot if Andy dressed up as Legolas and Phillip as Barliman Butterburr or Treebeard :p

Yeah, Jackson really screwed with the whole story anyway, He took out things that were there, and added in things that weren't, and then assigned statements to the wrong characters at the wrong time. All the way through I kept repeating...did you not read the effing books?

Lol, I have been trying to land some costume type garments that would allow me to insert people, or at least parts of them into the scenes....but have no idea what people I would get to participate with it. Very little production budget on this one, the key props are rather expensive lol

Although, as bad as The Hobbit was, the opening shire scene in Fellowship was a magical moment at the theater. Major goosebumps as the image in my head was played out so exactly across the big screen. Along with many other moments through the main trilogy movies.

I agree, his visuals were definitely well done! Loved the shire scene, and wish it had shown more and lasted longer :D

Brian, I'm a huge Tolkien fan. I actually read the books once a year. However, I wasn't able to read them all this year as I was trying to read all of Terry Brooks Shannara novels in order this year. Anyway, I'll gladly lend you any thing that I have that you might need for the project. I also have several of the UC movie replicas. Sting, Orcrist, Legolas' knives and Hadhafang. I'm trying to collect all the Elvish blades.
Unfortunately, I'm currently on the road for work until Labor Day weekend. If there's anyway that I can help just shoot me a PM.
