Any recommendation for winter wear

Sorry Pitdog, missed that! Yeah, I'm originally from Sheffield where Buffalo is made. One of the best discoveries I ever made.

I lived in Mansfield till about 18 mths ago, so not too far from you eh !!!!

Yeah Buffalo stuff is the best, it's also made to last as you have nothing to de-laminate etc !!!
I also have some Paramo gear which is good but Buffalo is still my first pick !

LOL! Small world!! :D

I've seen a shirt that was in a Belfast shop window when it was bombed, and another worn by a guy whose MSR stove exploded - Hardly any damage to either!

I also have some Paramo gear which is good but Buffalo is still my first pick !

Great stuff also! It uses essentially the same principle. It was actually Hamish Hamilton of Buffalo who put Nick Brown of Paramo/Nikwax onto the micropile that Paramo use (that's before Buffalo started using it themselves!)

If you're wearing standard waterproofs, no matter how 'breathable' they are, if it's raining hard enough, and/or you're working hard enough, you'll get wet. The great thing about Buffalo gear is that if this happens you probably won't even know because it dries so fast, and is just as warm wet as dry!

BTW Pitdog, you picked a good time to move, it's barely stopped raining here for the past 18 months!! :)

Sometimes the weather ain't so great here !!!

And another pic of me in my Buffalo special 6 shirt for those of you who were wondering what us crazy brits were talking about !!!

Great pics Pitdog :)

Do you wear the shirt next to your skin for serious stuff?

I have the S6 shirt, Belay Jkt, Mountain Jkt, S6 Trousers, Mountain Salopettes, High Altitude Salopettes, Mitts, Supporters, Pertex Shorts, Superbag, and Tent Boots! Unfortunately none of them are in cool black! They're all either olive green or cobalt. I'm really going to have to shell out for some new stuff some day!

Have you got on melting snow (in a plastic bag) in the shirt pouch?! :)

Judge critically how exposed you will be. For example,
will shelter be available or will they drop you off each
day in some remote area? Do you trust the organizers?
Prepare accordingly.

Above, head protection and insulation is emphasized.
Pay attention to that advice. One easy way is to get
two knit caps and make sure they are loose fitting.
A parka hood on at least one garment will protect from
wind.

Rain gear might be needed. Cold rain can kill you faster
than snow, because it can penetrate your clothing fast.
Minimum rain gear would be a sturdy garbage bag.

Hands and feet are harder and more expensive to protect
than is the head. Shoes or boots that are larger and wider
may be needed to accommodate thick socks or two pairs.

Gloves(light work): I like knit with leather palms and fingers.
Mittens(bad cold): leather or other non-slip palms thumbs.
Extra socks are great for feet and can be used as emergency
mittens or neck scarf.

Backpack for extra clothes and gear.

In really cold conditions, do not be surprised if others in your
group need or want to borrow clothing.

thanks for all the info, I do not know how cold is -3 deg C as i have never experienced winter before. Seems like Buffalo is quite popular and the best thing is that i am able to buy it here. I guess its best to be over prepared. Is there a model that is best?

Pitdog, thanks for sharing the pics. how cold is that in the snow? So i reckon its the buffalo jacket and inside is a wool sweater? c'mon, tell use what you got inside? You like very comfortable in that freezing temp :)

znode its to shanghai, they say its cold there because it rather wet and its below freezing still. thanks for the tips, the underwear that you are refering to are those thin stocking like pants or the thicker slack like pants? its a business trip with some travel and hiking with a few locals there. dont want to underdress :D

A Buffalo S6 shirt is the standard. Best thing to wear under it is nothing!

Wool Pants, Wool Socks, Good gortex hiking boots, gloves, warm hat I would recommend a wool watch cap or if you want a mad bomber rabbit fur hat or similar, also polypropolyne long johns and sock liners keep you warm and they will prevent blisters. fleece is good for layering or as an outer layer on warmer days. need a shell if raining or snowing or if it is extremely windy. avoid cotton as much as possible because it DOES NOT keep you warm when its wet. Cotton Kills its the truth thats what i tell all my Scouts

Ah, Shanghai. I've been there a few times. It's a southeastern city and it really isn't that cold - no colder than, say, Oregon, and much warmer than New York or Washington DC. Average January temperatures are 45F/33F. On Jan 1 it was 41F/30F.

Any sort of synthetic or wool underwear would do fine for this purpose - as I said, it's no Moscow, and not even New York, it just sometimes dips below freezing at nights, by which time you should be in hotels. Long underwear on the bottom + windproof pants, and 3-4 layers upper body (synthetic, wool, optional wool, jacket) should be enough for even long-term outdoors activities. (Don't overheat :)).

And again, dull colors, EDC less / deep-pocket EDC in urban areas to avoid being targeted for pickpocketing. For non-urban hiking, whoever's guiding you should be competent enough to avoid bad areas, but I'd carry OC spray.

theres a material made of wool and cashmere. Is that any good too?

its followed by tianjin which i heard is the colder one. sorry ommitted that.

As Jack says Buffalo tops are designed to wear against the skin as the pile lining draws any sweat away from the skin to prevent your body from chilling.
I actually wear a lightweight wicking t-shirt underneath such as a Helly Hanson if I'm just casual hiking. What you see around my neck in the second pic is actually a Buff Bandana which just stops any drafts when I'm not working up a sweat !

After you are in a northern climate for a while, you will acclimate;
but do not let this fool you. Cold can be dangerous; wind and water
with cold can be lethal. I worry more about avoiding wind and water,
than what the actual temperature is.

People have died at 45 degrees F, which is well above freezing.

I am not sure I understand you, here. However, one easy way of using layers,
is to use athletic type warm-ups over regular clothing; they come off and
go on very easily.

The problem with long underwear is that you must take off outerwear to
to remove the underwear; I use it only when I predict constant cold.
Underwear also causes me to be very warm in a heated car, not a good thing.
Also, to use underwear, your outerwear must be especially loose-fitting.

The problem is when you get in the pub! :D

I did a load of tests on diferent kinds of base layer for Buffalo, but nothing really came out too well. I don't know if you own any of the Paramo base layers Pitdog, but that might work pretty well.

Hamish Hamilton, Buffalo's designer and founder, went to great lengths to find underwear for his gear. As with everything it had to be rigorously tested and was designed for serious use. In this case, the test was being able to defacate on an icy slope in crampons! I usually wear the pertex boxers under my salopettes when I'm climbing, but I have a hysterical-looking pair of Buffalo 'supporters', a Pertex and pile creation, which certainly keep you snug! On only the second time I met Hamish, a skinny Scotsman with a wicked sense of humour, I found him wondering round his office wearing nothing, but a Buffalo mountain shirt and a prototype of what looks very much like a 'posing pouch'! Obviously I was a bit taken aback. "Aye", remarked Hamish in his rolling brogue. "They look like some sort of marital aid." :D

Yeah I do have a Paramo base layer but found it pills rather easy and prefer the bomb-proof qualities of my HH !
I also have the pertex boxers but drew the line at the furry pouch !!!!

HH stuff certainly is bombproof! Their double-pile stuff lasts forever.

I forgot to add that a few days after my encounter with Hamish in his Buffalo posing pouch, I got a package in the post with an example in purple!!! :D

Any pics ? Second thoughts forget that I have'nt had my dinner yet !!!!:barf:

Here is a short article from somebody else about the benefits of Buffalo clothing...

Astounded?

I personally, have used Buffalo in just about every type of
winter weather the UK can throw at you. It has dealt with
everything from 70mph+ wind to continuous torrential
rain with no prob1em at all. By which I mean that I have
always felt warm and comfortable. I have never needed more
than two layers on my top half and one on my legs.
And, despite every accepted mountain rescue team warning to
the contrary, I never carry waterproofs in the UK in winter
unless I’m nipping down the road for a
newspaper. In addition to nine years of UK winter use, I
have now used Buffalo for three winter seasons in the Alps,
on expedition to the Karakorum and two to Greenland
where I’ve found that the above clothing, together with a
Buffalo Superbag (E110 -120) arid a pair of Buffalo
Biviboots (f8) will cope (julite comfortably with bivouacs
down to -10 C. Below that (-25 C) a third jacket and some
extra leg protection would have been nice though the night
was riot totally uncomfortable. Moreover this system
is self-sustaining, remaining useable indefinitely, with
little regard as to how damp it is. But don’t just take my
word for it:-

Rick Allen (Latok 1990, Tien Shan 1991): "The most versatile
mountain gear I have ever worn..., equally well suited to a
day’s bog trotting, a hard technical route and a
7000m peak".

Doug Scott (Latok 1990 and other expeditions too numerous to
mention) "An excellent clothing system, ...exceptionally
versatile in the widely fluctuating temperature. On
Latok III, two bivouacs without sleeping bags were made
bearable by the Buffalo gear".

Ally KeIlas (Nanga Parbat 1992): "Buffalo kit used was a
great success ... ...
