I know I'm a new member myself, and haven't introduced myself, but...

I have a friend online who was considering buying a double edged dagger, He provided some links of items on Ebay, 90% of them stamped ''China'' at the ricasso, lol
You can imagine my fury, so I insisted he forges his own for far less...and thank God, He's bought into the idea, unfortunately he assures me there are no junkyards or abandoned railways (giggle) local to him.

So I've promised him that one of Bladeforums.com members would mail him some, heh, not to abuse your generosity of course...heh
But I will also mail you some cash to cover your costs if nessecary.

It doesn't matter what grade of steel, hell, he'd use iron if he had too, anything other than the aluminium he already has.

So, if anyone can help my him out, I'll be forever grateful, and I just might insist he sends me pics of the progress/finish....I know you love them ;)

He plans to forge something around 20" oal, but will be happy with 10"....

There are NO junkyards around you? No old cars anywhere to pull the leafsprings off of?

Forging a double-edged dagger as your first knife is biting off quite a lot, don'tcha think?

Some low carbon steel from a home supply would be just as useful as the thing in the picture. It would be good practice too.

Rujoco, I'll prolly mail some some of the hot-rolled iron I'm still practising with...
But I thought some of you might share giggles at the ''China'' gladius

 9.99 buy it now! Good Lord! I ask myself...why are raw materials wasted on stuff like that.

No!!!!!, not a double edged dagger, starting out. If you value your

friends sanity, suggest to him, something more in line with his skill level and

experience. Dagger grinding is for, " MEN OF STEEL " not someone who

cannot locate steel.

Fred

I would be willing to part with this chunk of steel.

A little pricier than a leaf spring; but less frustrating, for

your friend.

Aware,
If you check out the prices for 1075 or 1095 at Admiral's on-line store, no-one could could come up with a good reason not to buy it. You can get proper steel for the price of that Chinese POS. Although it would look great hanging on the wall, but not my wall.

Nice piece Fred.

Browsed that sellers other items. "Hand forged" samurai sword, with an edge and back of 45 hardness... no explaination of whether that is 45 HRC or 45 cheese :P

sure as hell they didn't clay wrap and quench. i would suspect their definition of forge is "heat it up so it can be bent"

I must admit to being guilty of buying cheap shaped steel on ebay, a Made in pakistan imitation civil war southern cavalrymans saber. lasted a few years hacking blackberry befre the tang weld that connected the 440C blade to the rebar hidden tang broke.
I'm thinking of doign a bit of gringing and re-profiling and fittign a full tang handle replacing the last bit of blade, it made a nice handy machete style chopper.

Kerry, I know exactly what you mean, even if the furniture is ''white metal'' heh

Lmao @ PimpinSquee's link...just hilarious...and depressing :(

Fred, I'm sure he'd love that, and more so that I'd intercept the deal and keep it myself,..... yes, yes my friend is pleased with his purchase..hehe
But honestly, I want him have a go himself, should shed light on those things called virtues...afterall, he wants to use it for ceremonial rites...
Oh..and last time I mentioned something theological I got my balls busted, so I want to make it clear, I discourage his practice, philosophy and ''pantheon'',ok ? lol

Rujoco, That is damn cheap, damn shame I cant view the online catalogue, I found 12 feet of 1" aisi 01 for $80 !!! on another site, wanted to see if it's that sorta price everywhere in america, just unsure how to get it posted here and at what cost, :'( ...prolly will order a lil chunk for him, should have enough cash left over after getting a crucible and some scrap bronze I've had my eye on.

Kiwi, lol @ 45 cheese, I saw one of those pakistani 440/''brass'' replicas at an antique store here, lol...was tempted, but I found a tibetan copper plaque...which cost me all I had on the day...
I too made myself a chopper...found a 40" hickory handled billhook/chopper thinggy, from 1890 I believe, I just cut the handle off, and wrapped the ''handle'' with 550 paracord, lol...the blade is like 1/3" thick and 10" long..keen as a razor...cost me £3 , budget furniture destroying fun. lol

If he makes one like yours first off I.mn going to making folder, Fred. I just love that one !!! Frank

Aware,

Most makers who post here, have humble beginnings.

At sometime in their lives, the urge to make an edged tool, just comes

to them, like an epiphany with a taunting air; Something in the genes

maybe. Some of them make a crude knife and are satisfied with it.

Some, make that first knife, look it over and realize they can do better.

The same thing happens with the next one and the next.

Your friend may be about to discover the, obsession, of knife making.

Or there may be just the one attempt and he will be satisfied.

What ever happens, he will find people here who will willingly help

him with advice on his project or help him to feed his obsession.

Fred

Aware,

Sorry, I didn't realise you were in the U.K. I'm sure somebody at over at BB could help you out.

Fred, very poetic, heh, He hasn't any motivation really, telling me there's no steel anywhere, lol...
Well I just finished forging something for him tonight...I'm going to keep it really rough, a slight hammer signature and maybe some patina, it may only be iron and oak (when I drill the handle tomorrow, borrowed from an old chisel.. heh), but I think he'll apprectiate it, and if he doesn't....I hope he'll try something himself...heh...cunning 'eh?
Reminds me of a medieval paupers dagger, lol

Hopefully I'll have it finished and in the post tomorrow.
Oh and its 18" oal with a 12" blade...Might add some fullering and a verse/script stamped at ricasso, going to ask him later...
Sorry about webcam pics, can't be arsed to send pics from my cell phone...I'm knackered...been pumping air / hammering for 5 hours straight, lol

Rujoco... I would have asked the BB members, but I'm procrastinating introducing myself with such a rude first post, going to wait till I have some examples of work first....

A very nice gesture on your part, I'm sure your friend will be pleased with such a fine gift.

Same reason they make generic beer, I reckon... there's a big market for absolute crap *shrug* It's true, $10 is better spent on a nice piece of quality steel to work with. Heck, if you're impatient just go pick up a Nicholson or Simonds file, temper it, and grind away whatever doesn't look "knifey". Not the best way, but it certainly works.

you think thats bad, check out the crap on www.budk.com

In the interest of fairness, budk does sell real knives, as well as butt-ugly "fantasy" wall-hangers. I ordered a couple from them last summer and was happy with the service and prices.

Not to misdirect the thread, but I too have recently been taken with the idea of making a knife. I was inspired by the "Absolute Cheapskate" formula, as it seemed to be simple enough to convince me I could do it and cheap enough for for my inevitable screw-up. Still, I am having great difficulty finding flat 5160 steel. All but one of the suspension places around me seem to think it is outdated or otherwise do not have any. The one place I found that did have it only has it as bent leaf springs.

I'm only looking to test the waters right now, so investing in 22' of stock from Admiral Steel doesn't seem quite cost-effective. Part of the Cheapskate appeal is my lack of knifemaking tools, so reforging or unbending a leaf spring doesn't seem like a viable alternative at this stage. Any suggestions?
