any shoulder bag users?

I used a Pangea Messenger bag for years.1000 denier black nylon with a bright yellow waterproof liner, 2 large pockets under a large flap. Liked the fact that I could put field dressed small game in one pocket and not have "mess" on my other field gear and you could wash it out with a garden hose. Got to find another one somewhere.

I use the 10X4 maxpedition holder with a 3X5 attached. It's much more comfy than a backpack when it's warm out. I hate having a hot back from a backpack and in the summer time I'm not carrying extra layers so the backpack is over kill IMO. It's also nice to have that along when camping too. If you want to hike around camp it's nice to have a good bit of survival gear just in case you get lost without having to sling a large backpack.

might carry old bread bags, put field dressed pheasant, rabbits, squirrels etc in there. I do it because I always skin the furred small game before carrying it around--those fleas have to go somewhere. :)

Hi all,

I to am a shoulder bag user. Here is my main set up and it contents.
US Military butt pack with a shoulder sling to carry it. The knife and hatchet I wear on my belt.
The rest goes in the bag.

Bryan, what type of kit is that next to the SS Guyot/Nalgene bottle?

Snow Peak Mini Solo?

Love shoulder Bags. I have some old but solid military shoulder packs. My BOB consists of three of them.

For most outdoors activities I usually go backpack. There are times when I do take a shoulder bag. Here is a TAD Gear Dispatch Bag completely stuffed with Plano tackle boxes. All the boxes would not fit in my backpack.

Sorry for the confusion, I was referring to simple, open bags.

I have two I use a lot. They're Dutch (I think) surplus... rubberized canvas with two straps/buckles to secure the top flap and just one small divider inside. I bought the two of them; a small and a large one, for something like $17 several years ago. I've seen them much cheaper recently. I've been using the smaller one constantly during duck season (and I duck hunt a lot) and it just started to leak after lots of hard seasons of hunting. (Sometimes it hangs in the water when I'm wading. I'm sure I can find the leak and easily patch it.)

The larger one is handy for just about anything; I keep it in the back of the car.

I have a Maxpedition Jumbo Versipack and while it looks pretty large, the largest compartment isn't very large at all. It's handier for organizing small gear, but not nearly as good at carrying larger items as the simple flap-top, single-compartment shoulder bags are.

I use quite a few shoulder bags, most of them I’ve made. I have a couple back packs too but mostly I use shoulder bags. These are my most used bags.

I carried this Duluthpack every day before I made the one above.

Those Dutch surplus bags are for sale here, six for $15, as well as a good selection of other milsurp shoulder bags.

There are some real bargains out there in military surplus for shoulder bags, with lots of styles available for little money.

I have a couple of them that I will occasionally use. One is a smaller Croatian surplus woodland camo bag that I got from Sportsmans Guide years ago. The other is a larger Dutch gas mask bag. I don't use either so much any more, but they are nice options to have around.

I've been using a kit similar to Bryan Breedens for quite a while. Just ordered me a new Maxpedition Typhoon so that I can expand it.

For a quickie afternoon hike or a trip to the river for a swim I always take my Maxped versipak. For a dedicated day in the woods, I almost always use a day pack so I can conveniently carry more gear and shed clothing as it gets warmer.

There is now one like this for sale but khaki on bf.

If I'm not hiking far, I'll often use a duffel bag slung over the shoulder instead of a typical backpack

I'm not a fan at all of single-pocket shoulder bags. I find it much nicer to have some organizational pockets in a bag for dayhikes/short hunts. Just got a Maxpedition Fatboy, and it works very well for my purposes. Keeps my load light and comfortable.
