any shoulder bag users?

I got a medium Timbuk2 messenger bag to add to my collection of shoulder bags.

This is essentially one big pocket with a waterproof lining. There is a simple organizer panel inside, just enough for a few regular items. It has mostly replaced my other bags. being totally casual, non-tactical, lightweight, and capacious. It avoids the sling bag problem of slipping off my shoulder because it has the messenger bag stabilizer strap which holds it in place as comfortably as a backpack.

I had gotten another medium messenger before that, a Chrome in woodland camo, which I set up for walking through the local woods and trails. I really like the concept.

Hey Esav, can you elaborate on the 'bag stabilizer strap'?

Thanks,

Doc

When you wear the main strap across your chest, you attach a small strap to a D-ring at the bottom of the bag under the shoulder the bag is riding on. Then you attach the small strap, running it under your arm to the main strap. Then the bag won't shift.

http://www.timbuk2.com/tb2/retail/magnifier.htm?productId=1235968 -- you can see it attached at the lower right, from where it reaches up to the main strap

I have them set up on both my messengers, although I don't always use them. I'm planning on rigging a similar strap on my County Comm XL BOB, also a favorite gear bag, lots of capacity, but usually heavier because of what all I keep in it. (Good for travel but overkill for a day strolling around or shopping.)

Yup! I use a small mlisurp (not sure which country) gas mask bag for small day trip. It's super-handy. For heavier stuff, you run into the problem of getting put off balance and having too much pressure on just one shoulder. But this little one halds all that I need for a day trip, including what I'd need for an unforeseen overnight.

It's this guy:

It's a Finnish gas mask bag. Super-handy indeed.

I have tried several shoulder bags. When I travel within the city I carry a shoulder bag with a very light load. Beyond that I am not a shoulder bag fan.

I have tried shoulder bags when going into the woods and have discovered I do not like them. I drink a lot of water when hiking. The moment I put that 32 ounce nalgene in my shoulder bag is when it gets too uncomfortable. All that weight on one shoulder gets irritating.

For me nothing beats a good old fashion backpack.

Ive been using a Maxpedition Lunada.....I love it. Perfect for my needs in an EDC BOB type bag. I consider it a shoulder bag...

Yeap, Pistolero's bag is finnish.

I have german budeswehr bag I use on daily basis, not just in the woods. Tough as hell, couldn't think of any way to break it. No pic though sorry, maybe later.

A.L. like this one?

I have a black one which I just modified. Added zippered pocket to the flap, some webbing inside to hold eg. an umbrella or a jacket. I also made the big front flap foldable. It's way better now :)

Yeah, that's the one except mine is possibly older version because my shoulderstrap seems wider with sturdier attachments. It's true that it's rather simple, with only the main section (very roomy though) and one extra pocket (good for fixed knife).

Any pics you could post of the thing you made, I'd be very interested to see it.
I ordered maxpedition shoulderbag but the place where I ordered from seems to have some weird technical problems...

Maxped Fatboy for me, love it, perfect size for all my day hikes or EDC needs.

I don't see a lot of love for shoulder bags here for wilderness use -- maybe I'm imagining that.

Even though there's some excellent packs available, I've taken to using a simple hunter's field bag: waxed cotton canvas, nylon lined, and the main feature... just one big opening (and one flat pocket). Pros: It's lighter than my daypack because it uses less fabric than compartmentalized packs. I personally find it much easier and much faster to toss in and retrieve my items from the big opening. It's easy to carry across chest and I can hike and carry a canoe while wearing it. Cons: no small pockets but that's no problem because I keep the smallest items in a little pouch anyway.

if you dont mind me asking where did you find that bag i bought a a military map case but its not really what i wanted. i have been looking for one for a while, and how did you waterproof yours any information would be great thanks

It is very hard. I've handled a lot of their gear, some of it my own. I was strongly tempted by the Colossus. Drew pictures to scale with others I knew better, -- then one of the guys had one for me to look at and it just didn't make the grade. Lots of room but broken up into too many finicky separate pockets. You really do need to handle them, or check out W&SS for some of the great photo series. :D

I love using my Kifaru Tailgunner I as a shoulder bag. I added a 2" Maxpedition strap with shoulder pad. The large main pocket is great, but all the smaller interior pockets keep things very organized.

Has anyone seen the Maxpedition Mongo Versipack, it's an enlarged version of the Jumbo? I'm curious if anyone here has picked one up already?

Spooky,

It's a Finnish gas mask bag. Thanks for the picture showing the contents. It helps as a size reference. I'm looking into getting one after seeing yours.

Thx,
Mike

i've always loved the GI Buttpack with some little pouches as necessary hanging off the end webbing.

i've been supplementing that carry with a MOLLE waist pack in bandoleer carry, when i want a blanket or more-comprehensive shelter along for a possible night out.

i've been playing with a new RIBZ pack too, in place of the bag (a close friend makes them, they are pretty good for the money as well as their minimal nature) - it's nice to have all your stuff hidden under your jacket when in public areas.

Here's a comparison between original, modified, and modified packed full. You can see how low the front flap hangs, it's very long.

I sewed metallic buckles to back of the flap. They keep it nicely folded when there isn't a lot to carry as you can see from the pic above. I also put some webbing attachment points little higher up for holding a jacket or an umbrella etc.

Here's a closeup of the front. The zippered pocket I made reaches just below the webbing attachement.

I've been thinking of getting some MP products, but I (we) have too many packs allready. So I decided to mod the existing ones exactly to my liking. This one's allmost finisned, I might put some small pocket inside, or pals-like webbing or something to attach a multitool pouch.

I still have a couple of Haglöfs Tights and a Savotta anatomic pack to modify before summer.

I have that same bag only black/red. Not for woods use though, more of an EDC bag if needed. Not a bad deal.
