Hey guys,

Do any of you use any knives made by SOG in the field? If so, what and how do you like it?

I use a SOG Revolver and X-42 field knife quite a bit. Back in college I used a Desert dagger and Government model a lot. The Tigershark gets used a bit too. At home I use a SOG Pentagon and Mini Pentagon to cut veggies and other things. They also make great steak knives. On campouts and hiking trips I carry one of the Pentagons as a backup blade.

I've got a SOG Powerlock, SOG Trident folder, and SOG Seal Pup Elite. So far they have been fantastic, at least for me. The Trident and the PowerLock are my EDC.

*Edit*
Just remembered I've also got a SOG Pentagon and mini Pentagon. They both are nice, giving you the option of using a serrated or straight edge. The mini Pentagon is a great backup knife, as wildmanh said above.

I had a seal pup for a while. Not a bad knife. It's mean looking, IMO. I got at least one friend who swears by SOG.

You just reminded me, My PowerLock is my EDC. It's on my when I have pants on so I don't even think about it. Use it a bit. Probably the best money on a tool I've spent in quite a while.

I have the Northwest Ranger and the Daggert 1. The Ranger, with it's 5" blade, is a handy compact field knife that I carry frequently. The Daggert is taken along only in areas where no guns are allowed but there are enough bear and cougar around to cause some concern.

I used to take my Tsunami out with me just about every time, but I've since shied away from fixed blades with serrations. I'll sometimes use a SEAL pup (plain edge version) and I keep a Field Pup in my PSK.

My EDC is a Trident.

I carry my GOV-TAC with me all the time in the woods, it's a great knife and no matter how much I use it, it always shaprens up great without any trouble.

Ditto, add a Gerber command II instead of the pentagons and you have my setup.

I have a SOG Seal Pup Elite (Plain blade, satin finish) and a Trident folder (also plain blade, satin finish). Trident folder is more of an EDC, however the pup gets a lot of use for my hunting work, especially field dressing wallaby and deer. Blade is perhaps slightly too large for wallaby, however it enables me to cut straight through the backbone to remove the 'useful' part of the animal. Only problem I have is the satin finish shows up scratches REAL easy after going through bone, but I suppose that is to be expected. The AUS-8 blade holds the edge reasonably well considering the hard use it gets. I would be interested in knowing how easy the TiNi coated SOG blades scratch compared to the satin finish??

I bought my first "bright" finish Tiger Shark Bowie when they first came out. Great knife, very strong, been sharpened many times as I beat the heck out of the knife.

I also have a second Tiger Shark with the dark finish that
is more tactical and has seen limited use. I saw where a prop man in a movie crew stripped the black finish off of a Tiger Shark in the "Lost" TV show. I may try that on the second knife.

My son and I carry SOG "Power Pliers" as EDCs.

I have carried a used SOG Bowie (I bought from a pawn shop cheap) but it is a heavy weight knife vs a typical Randall knife of the same blade length. The Randall typically wins as far as which one gets carried. The SOG Tiger Shark is a great "chopper" though.

Sogs, especially the seal pup, are very popular in the military and among non knife people. (not to be confused with sheeple, people who use knives but don't care about steel, geometry, manufacturer, ergonomics etc.) I personally havent been impressed with the seal pup, the quality/fit and finish was good but it wasn't very ergonomic and the serrations were no good for cutting anything. I found the blade to thin and delicate for a FB and the AUS-8 wouldn't hold an edge at all. The multi-tools are good though.
JMHO.

I use my Sog Powerlock in the woods. My first one is sitting at the bottom of the Farmington River (it slipped out of my hand sawing a caught fish and my terminal tackle out of some roots). I haven't lost my second one yet.

Here's a pic of it with some other gear from a recent outing.

I've got an older 440A SEAL 2000. I used it exclusively for the first few years I had it, but it was eventually replaced with other things. It worked well for me, and split plenty of campfire wood with the help of a baton. It'll handle a lot of different tasks. I took it car camping again in 2007 and put it through it's paces just for old times' sake. It still worked pretty well.

I bought two of the SOG Recon Bowies a pretty good while back. One was a user and the other a display knife (until the user got beat to death, then it would become the user.) I love the look of the design and for some jobs it was great, but after a while I stopped carrying it. It just wasn't as good of a user as most of my other knives. Some time soon I need to completely reprofile the edge and sharpen it back up. I probably still won't use it much and I'm sure the display will remain a display forever. I've tried out several SOGs but just always ended up buying something else. Maybe some day my love for the Recon Bowie will come back. I doubt it though.

I am interested in the SOG teamleader. I would probably get the $80 AUS 8 version. $160 is too high for duratech. (at least for me anyway)

I think AUS 8 is a great steel.
