Any tips for a first GEC?

I didn't notice your location. Where in the Bay Area are you located? I only have three GECs, but they're the #73 I showed earlier and a spearpoint and clip point Charlow (#15). You're welcome to check them out.

I didn't know there were any GEC dealers nearby. If you can share their locations it would be much appreciated.

If you like the wharncliffe blade check out the 57 pattern. The half whit and gepetto whittler (2 and 3 blade) for a nice compact knife with a wharncliffe main.

Look at the patterns available and choose from there. Some people might like a certain pattern others don't. I ended up with a 66 because I liked the handle shape, and it was a stockman.

Thanks for all of the answer, I have many good choices.
Kamagong, I am in the penninsula, Mountain view. the best stocked knife shop I know in the city in on the pier, but I am not sure they have GEC knives, I have yet to find a decent knife shop in the south bay.. That one has customs and high end production, but mostly one handers, so I will let you know if I find a dealer in the bay area.
Thanks again!

You say you are a fan of Case knives. I take that to mean you carry one most of the time? Do you tend to carry a single blade or multi-blade model? Small or large? Whatever type of pattern you prefer in a Case, GEC probably has something in the same category. That might narrow things down for you a bit.

That said, you cant go wrong with a #15!

I'm new to GECs myself and have already got a little collection going so be warned, it can get out of hand in a hurry.

That said, I'm absolutely loving my #68, it has seen a ton of pocket time. I did also carry my ney acquired #15 today and it was great as well. I'd vote the #15 for a first purchase if you're looking for something classic.

Consider the #16 Indian Girl Canoe ... GEC's "take" on the classic canoe pattern. An 8th of an inch shorter, more rounded, a tad less width, and a pinch capable spear. Plenty of choices in features between the Tidioute and Northfield versions. The classic canoe can feel somewhat bulky in the pocket but the GEC is very pocketable (IMHO). Regardless of any of the foregoing comments about the Indian Girl or the "classic" CASE/Queen style canoe -a KnifeNut like me has accumulated examples of all of them. :D

I'd say one of the 15 variants or as you like the 85 and 92 already then certainly those are excellent also. I have the 15, 85 and 92 and like them all. The 92 is the largest of the three by just a bit, but i REALLY like the 92 with it's spear/coping blade combo.

It's all really down to what appeals to you, so examine the models and zero on on a couple, then we can give you details, measurements, etc.

Here's a 15 TC Barlow and an 85 for comparison...

It might have to be an 85, that teardrop (sorry, bullet end) is just beautiful. it's like the figoni et falaschi talbot-lago150ss of slipjoints. elegant, purposeful, Looking at one in black buffalo horn that looks like a very reasonable price for a beautiful knife. certain to be the first of many.

Thanks for all the help!

late post here but the #85 or #15 gets my vote. A few more pics:

( I love micarta and have never had stag..)… I do like a knife with no blade over 3 inches and 2 or three blades including a wharncliffe.

Gec pattern #26, 3" closed, called a Sleeveboard Whittler (contact dealers for an edge photo if stag handle thickness is not shown)

pattern 62, half congress, I did not find you a stag one in stock with this dealer, but I recommend this pattern as "most classic"

also pattern 57, I sent you links by private message because the dealer is forbidden from being posted, as they have not paid BF a fee

I'm a fan of the 15 and 85 patterns, they've served me well :)

I do love the 26 sleeve board whittler. Fountain Pens, a peanut, and so many great gec knives... Looks like it will be a 26 or an 85. Thanks again! And thanks for posting pics, seeing different knives and comparison shots out of promotional perfection is really helpful. Thanks guys!

A few comparison pics :D

My tip, buy a few on your first order if you can. Get a northfield and tidioute. One wharnie and one spear or clip. Single spring pen knife, jack or stockman. Whatever you dont like can easily be sold or traded here and your new found insight will steer you or your questions to us a little better for your next purchase ;)

Again, the 73, but mine is a bear to open. I never use it anymore. The Bullnose is great though. Get one in micarta if you still can.
