Any vest wearers?

Geez, from the looks of that *ultimate* fly fishing vest, they have turned fly fishing into something that is opposite of what fly fishermen have been since their inception. That being low tech, following a long line of tradition and reverence, like a low tech longbow shooter. Personally, I wouldn't wear that vest if they paid good money to do it.

I like the multi pocket travelers vests, or photographer vests. They tend to stay away from making the wearer look like the pillsbury doughboy when loaded with gear.

I like the idea of a vest. Makes great sense to hold basic gear on your person.

As a sometime flyfisherman I do have a fly vest but I don't think the short cut to allow for wading would translate very well. The photographer's/traveler's/safari vest make much more sense. I just might have to look into getting one! Then you never have to worry about losing the basics kept in a little belt pack. It would be nice to reach into a pocket when you wanted a bit of kit rather than having to dig through the pack every time.

I picked up a Woolrich travelers vest that they replaced a few years after I got mine. I've been using it on and off for about 5 years now and it's been a good piece of kit for me. I don't wear it in warmer weather, prefering to wear it in dry, cool weather over a wool shirt, or over a T shirt during the fall when temps run in the 60s.

part of me really prefers a short vest, for a couple reasons.

1: in CA, concealing my belt FB knife isn't legal, and I tend to carry a bit of stuff on my belt anyhow.
2: I wear a kilt a lot, it just LOOKS better.

Part of me really likes the standard longer vests, though. comfort and capacity are the main reasons.

Great thread.

I use to use a photography vest for camping but it had more pockets then I ever used and ended up just hanging it in the gear closet.

I have a King of the Mountain wool vest similar to this one http://www.kingofthemountainonline.com/ec/additem.asp?pid=vest05 that I love but it's low on carry volume and gets no use in the summer, damned good for the other 11 months of the year though.:p:foot:

Filson has a nice Tin Cloth Cruiser Vest that I've been thinking about but haven't bought yet. http://www.filson.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2092234&cp=2065674.2065685.2117159&parentPage=family. I have other Filson items and they have been bomb proof so far.

Good luck
Helle

Filson is expensive and Filson tends to be heavy, good cold weather clothes, but I don't need half the warmth they provide. But I looked up the Tin Cloth Cruiser Vest after it was mentioned here, and it isn't particularly expensive, and it looks like a good weight and fair amount of carry space. I will probably add it to my collection. :)

This is me in my vest when my back went the other month !

I'd consider a Tilly, but I'd really want to try one for a bit. I'm not often very good with synthetics, but as an outer layer is might work out okay.

the tropical blend and legends outback are the ones I'd probably shoot for.

Wow this was awesome guys, thanks. I know one thing im worried about is that I sweat alot, so the heavy made ones would be a problem, so the mesh, or light styled ones or perfect, that tilly looks nice Esav,

And thanks everyelse, this I why I love this site, you guys a ALOT of help, thanks.

:thumbup: on Domke and the old Banana Republic vests. Add Ex Officio vests to your list too.

I like vests a lot, but they are uncomfortable and hot with a load. If you are going to carry a few light items like pen, notepad, sunglasses, MP3 player, etc., they aren't bad, but much more than that starts to flap and bound around. From there I would go to a backpack or messenger bag of some sort.

I have to agree that the flyfishing vest is spendy and will look odd if you don't have a pole and waders.

The problem with many vests is that most of the pockets, if not all, are on the front.
Therefore most of the weight is in the front and the whole thing hangs on the back of your neck. That gets old real fast.

I've settled on the repro airforce survival vest that I bought in Iceberg Army Navy many moons ago.
I use it as a fishing vest.
It is OK as long as it isn't overloaded.
Since the vest was designed for sitting down, with a parachute on, it works well with a pack. Or in my case camelback.

It's mostly mesh so it isn't warm. Really, really stiff when new though.

Another thing to look out for when selecting a vest is the position of your arms when your are relaxed. If there are pockets that keep your arms away from your sides they will tire quickly.

D Rearic mentioned the Banana Republic Photojournalist vest from the 80's.
That one is my commuter vest in the summer time. Well thought out, comfortable and has a back pocket that'll hold a paper back to balance the load.
I stuffed that full of gear when I walked into Manhattan to pick up my daughter from HS on 9.11.
One pocket even fits my CS Recon Scout.
:)

cool, this really croadens my view on vest. I know I need something light, durable and just enough pockets to get me buy If I were to loose my pack. A FAK, firstarter, water purifacation stuff, just the essentials.

Wicked links guys, this is much appreciated!.
