Any vest wearers?

I used to use a vest to carry around ridiculous amounts of kit on scout camps. started off with a second hand (well more like third or fourth hand) SWATF (south west african territorial force or somesuch) Vest. had four ammo pouches on the front (perfect for sigg type waterbottles), two large utillity pouches (messtin sized), a big back pouch with two sort of tube shaped pouches on the back (never realy used, it had a big rip in one of the seams) and a little grenade pouch on each side of the chest. I used the width ajuster straps to add my knife sheath, torch holster, and leatherman pouch. If you can get one new it looks like a very well built bit of kit, my one was just incredibly well used.

after about a year that fell to peices (a few of the pouches seams gave) I "upgraded" to a cheapy south african defence force vest (aka south african webbing, south african vest ect) in what I think was supposed to be us woodland cammo. that was allright, fitted more gear, and was in better condition (although it was still second hand, it hadn't been used much) but had nowhere to put my sheath knife, and I started wanting something a bit more flexible.

I went over to belt rigs after that, far more flexible and easy to make lower profile. my rig was sort of PLCE based, although there where pouches taken from the SWATF vest, specialist pouches (eg torch pouch, leatherman pouch) and at one point the belt was a security type. that rig lasted (in various variants) for about 6-9months. then I discovered the fact that there where female scouts (well, female scouts who wern't also my sisters evil mates, who made my life hell anyway) and the webbing fairly quickly dissapeared.

Now I use one of these to carry basic gear (more or less I take out my EDC gear and replace it with my leatherman, mini FAK, a few fire lighting bits, a torch ect) and maybe my mora on my belt. all under a shirt and no-one even notices. I do have a cheapy photogrophers type vest from disneyland that I occasionaly use, mainly if it's a survival style camp. survival bag fits nicely in the back poachers pocket, survival tin in a front zip pocket, some cord, my leatherman, a torch ect.

I totally agree with this recomendation,i bought two Viper vests at Xmas olive green and DPM.I am able to carry a poncho gtex bivi bag and snug pack merlin in it for shelter .Waterproof jacket and trousers,US pilot flask and empty 5 quart bladder for water.Fire lighting kit including fire blocks etc emergency rations a metal ,mug first aid kit, gps, phone etc.it has around 13 pockets ranging from ammo pouch to utility pouch size.Definately worth a look.I'm around 5'.5" and it's not big and bulky when worn. The only down side is with the back pouches full wearing a pack would be interesting to say the least.

I would be careful with Viper products, they haven't got the best reputation for quality. although some of their stuff is reasonable. but if it works for you, enjoy it (the pouches are a bit of a pain empty wearing a pack, they let it slide around your back, let alone full)

Traditionally speaking, jackets and vests made to be worn with a kilt are cut very short to compliment the very high rise of the kilt. Kilts are made to be worn at the natural waist (about 2" above the navel). See http://www.xmarksthescot.com/ if you want to learn more.

So he was saying that wearing the vest shorter looks better? I see. It sounded like he was saying that wearing kilts just looked better, which had me a little confused.:)

Actually, maybe he did mean that. It could be me that's confused. :o

Well, as far as the long versus short vest, that's the traditional high cut, if you REALLY want a source, the best one is So You're Going To Wear The Kilt by J. Charles Thompson F.S.T.S.

As far as kilts looking better- the best source is the 'muckumercial' videos on the utilikilts website. Or, just put on a kilt and go to just about any kind of festival that has attendance from single women :D
