he wanted some cable forged up. to make a dagger with. but it will require at least two billets of cable. would you recomend san mai for something like that? a peice of say 1095 between two billet of cable?
thanks

There's someone with that username but zero posts, so no access to a profile, join date, or anything.

My advice:
Custom order that may be hard to sell otherwise because of the design? Take a 50% deposit.
Bank-cleared payment in full in your bank account prior to shipping. Payment preferably a form of indisputable MO (like USPS) or Western Union.

TeflonBilly may be a fine, upright fellow. That said, the internet has created a plethora of con men, too. Always be careful.

There are many many lurkers here that never post. Do you have reason to believe he is untrustworthy? I would make him what he wants, he is a customer.

edited to say that lurkers is not a bad thing

makes sense to me... i already stared on the work.. and it is just damascus.. if it falls out, i can use it for something else. thanks for the feedback.. i will be careful, and no i dont have reason to believe he is untrustworthy, i just wanted to know

have him send you a fedx check and arrange pickup. the driver hands you the fedx check, you hand the driver the package and its a done deal.

I agree, lurkers are certainly not a bad thing, Bruce. I wasn't implying that at all. They are simply someone you can't learn anything about through their posts. Does that mean you shouldn't do business with them? Of course not. It simply means you don't rush headlong into a transaction and do something foolish like send someone the product on a promise "the check is in the mail". People sometimes get fooled by the glib tongue of a con man. Remember "Bulldog" aka "Rick Watson" and the scam with the power hammers a few years back?

I periodically voice these cautions because too many times new makers jump at any commission they can get and don't always approach it with the soundest forethought.
Just to be clear, I'm not suggesting I thought Chris was going to do that, either. But, I feel it doesn't hurt to occasionally remind people to be meticulous in the way they conduct business, for both the buyer's and sellor's sake.

That's all I was saying. Everyone can surely do business however they want.

Have fun with your billet, Chris.

Taking an order from a lurker isn't any different than selling to an outlander, hehe, that's me new definition of a non-forumite!
Fitzo and Bruce done gave you the advice you need. Make the stuff but get paid up front!

teflonbilly?

Does anyone else see a former president's face every time he reads that user name?

Me too Barkes and I wish I had a truck load of that stinkin beer of his!!!! Stuff is probably worth a fortune to collectors nowadays!

When I get an order from anyone whether I know them or not, I simply ask them to provide me with all of their contact info so that I can enter it into my order book. That way, the order will be properly entered into my system and be tracked accordingly by the order number that I give to each order that I receive.

Teflon Bill was the nickname they gave Bill Clinton. There is even a record album about him ,named "Teflon Bill".

I want to see what you make if you don't sell it!

wow... thas pretty funny. i know i had heard the name teflonbilly before.... but i was not of age to appreciate political humor during Clinton's reign.

heh.. i still have to hear back from THIS teflon bil about whether he wants san mai or not before i can really forge ahead.

the only "complication" is that he wants to trade rather than pay cash.. and he wants to trade via a small diamond. the hard thing is... diamond would be very fitting right now. it just might need one here in a bit. he recomended swapping tracking numbers.. however.. i dont know if i am going to do that. i think that going to use some other sort of "feedback" possibly something here on the forum to cinvince him that i will deliver when promise, and ship the steel when i get the diamond.
what do you think?
thanks

I agree whole heartedly with Mike Fitzgerald. EVERY time I get an order over the internet or email I ALWAYS give them my phone number so I can speak to them "face to face" that does 2 things.

1. Its great customer service. It makes them feel that there order is important enough to me that I will pay for a long distance call and talk to them personally about what there wants, needs and expectations are. Not just what they ordered.

2 It gives me a feel for what kind of person they are. Do they sound like they are a 20 year old single guy or a 50 year old married collector. What are there other interests in knives? Do they prefer wood or ivory handles? Mirror polish or satin? Damascus? If they ordered a satin finish ATS blade because they didnt think they could afford your damascus, let them know that you can make the same knife in damascus for "only $75 more!" You wouldnt believe how much you can learn about someone by talking to them for 15 minuts. It also leaves a good impresion on them about you. It gives the illusion that you care.:D

As was previously stated. If its a custom order take 50% down. If its something you would have made anyway, DONT TAKE A DEPOSIT.

Michael

By the way, you make one hell of a knife! You worry me!

chris, what do you know about diamonds? wouldn't you rather deal with a jeweler and certificates of quality and whatnot for a diamond that, it sounds like, will be the object of great fanfare and celebration?

cash is cash. you can buy diamonds with cash. it's harder to buy cash with diamonds.

Man, the only way I would trade for a diamond is if he sent it to me and I took it to a gem appraiser myself. Even if he sent you the gemologist report you sometimes have to be an expert to tell whether it's the same diamond as the report. You might get a better overall deal trading a diamond, but be extremely careful. I wouldn't give him anything until I had the gem report in my hand saying it was worth at least what you want to get for the work.
