Anybody else disappointed with 14C28n

Has anyone else who has found rust spots on their blades decided upon whether to apply a more highly finished polish?

Any thoughts on how and what to use to do this without power tools?

Bonkers, Samhain73 seemed to have a pretty good suggestion (below). Also, you can use ascending grits of sandpaper to change the finish by hand.

The bead blast rusts like crazy, it's just too porous. But I just strop them with a scotchbrite pad, for a nice satin finish. Works like a charm.

I too have removed the lighter beadblast finish with scotchbrite and then rubbed Flitz into the blade with cotton rags for a nice satin finish. I have found it to be difficult though with blades that have a "hard" beadblast finish like older Microtechs and older Benchmade auto's.

Then you have a knife with 440A, not 14C28n (or 13C26 for that matter either). 440A has much more Chromium than the Sandvik steels mentioned and I haven't had a problem with bead-blasted 440A blades rusting. Thanks anyway.

so yes I've had experience with 13C26 AND 14C28N and NONE of my kershaws of any steel have ever rust spotted, and neither has my fathers and he abuses it much more than I do; he's a truck driver and uses it for everything under the sun.

Thanks anyway,

FWIW I learned about this issue with a 440A Leek. Spots on the blade the first day I carried it. Polished it up to 1200 grit and it was fine afterward. Didn't give me a favorable impression though. I prefer knives I don't have to polish to have the stainless steel behave as, well....stainless.

mine is a jan 09, some here have said that equals 14C, but according to a kershaw customer service email sent to me, only knives made after FEB 09 are 14C. so I guess 13C.

Thanks, Jake. Quite frankly, I can't tell a difference between the two steels.

I have a Skyline in 13C26 and a Zing in 14C28 and before reading this thread,i would have said I didn't have rust issues but... I work around water, even salt water sometimes and I have seen little spots just on the bevel of the blade. Most of my bevel is left fairly corse, I only polish the extream cutting edge.

These spots will rub off with just my fingers (carefully) or stroped on cardboard. I never thought that it could be rust. Doesn't happen all the time just when I'm not wiping off the blade after use. I find this not a big deal and don't see any of the edge degrade in any way. I love 13C26 and I now just treat it like it will rust and don't have any problems. **I never saw this as a problem anyway**
