Anybody else stand all day for their job? - what shoes are best?

I second the skateboard shoe suggestion. You will not find a more comfortable and durable shoe. Skateboarders put their shoes through some punishment. They also have very good arch support and are very comfortable. I still wear skateboard shoes even though I haven't been on a skateboard for about 7 years. Other kinds of athletic shoes don't seem to compare IMHO.

Their are many different brands and designs to chose from. If you want to try them but don't know where they sell them just ask any teenage boy.

I've worked retail for some time. I've tried Rockports, and other brands.

If I have to stand for hours on end, the only shoes I'll wear will be Doc Martens from now on.

scrolled down until I saw someone who mentioned Doc martens so I could go +1:)

Not the greatest walking boots and not great ankle support (despite the high lace-up) but for all day standing - they have no competition IMHO

I don't think this is what your looking for but I'll post it anyway. All the nurses I work with swear by those 'Croc' shoes, specifically the clogs. A recently read they tested as being the best footwear for maintaining gait, supporting the arch and can help if you have back pain. We all work 13 hour shifts with a total of hour-and-a-half break and move alot of weight around, and these Crocs have become THE choice amongst the staff in the two hospitals I work in, though I've not tried them myself yet.

D.

All the Chefs I work with use birkenstock I on the otherhand use australian boots (oliver) together with a military quality shok absorbing insole I work some days 16-18 hours and the use of the insole hos eliminated my knee ache.

When I am working as a Surgical Tech, I wear a pair of Merrell's. My knees and back don't hurt from standing all day.

+1 on the DM's I was thrilled when I found their Industrial Line (Steel Toe) because my job requires them.

Liked them so much I bought another pair to wear when I ride my motorcycle

I have high arches too and while I don't have to stand often, when I do, I love my Naot. I have a pair of their shoes and a pair of sandals. The bottom is a cork-like substance that both supports and cushions. I know they make a boot, but I haven't tried it.

Crocs are great too, if you can stand how they look.

I stand/walk around 9 hours a day at my job. Since I needed a cheap pair of steel toed boots that I would destroy, I got some of the $20 wally-world specials. They started to hurt my feet after the first few days, so I asked a friend that is a athletic trainer at the local high school what I should do. He recommended the gel inserts (doesn't matter if it is brand name or not) and since I put those in I don't have anymore problems with my boots.

Just my $.02

Got a mostly desk job now, but I used to work all day on my feet on bare concrete. When I do shop support work I still spend all day on concrete.

I found that what works best for me is thick heavy soles. It's kind of like carrying around a set of rubber mats like what STR was talking about. I've found that the specific brand matters less than having those thick heavy rubber soles. Thick socks helps a lot, too. I use heavy boot socks that I get from the sporting goods stores.

I've had bad luck with the last two pairs of Red Wings. They didn't last for me. YMMV. Right now I've got a pair of heavy American made work shoes I bought from a catalog. (Got super wide feet. Can't buy from most shoe stores.)

20 years in the Army and 17 in corections always Danners . Army was Tactical units prison was 12 hrs a day on steel and concrete up and down stairs all day I had a summer and a winter pair bought when starting corections and a couple of resoles and still going strong I am a big boy with type ll diabetes and never had a problem with my feet.

I wear Doc Martens when I am standing for long periods of time. Redwings tend to die to quickly on me. That being said, to my sit down computer job I wear a pair of loose Vision Skateshoes. (And no I haven't stepped on a skateboard in 17 years :)) There's a reason the pope bought a pair of Docs. They are comfortable and tough. I run around the woods in my Danners and run around the city in my Docs.

I agree with the posts suggesting New Balance.

Not only do they have great support and availability in wide sizes, but their
models also have different "lasts" i.e. shapes.

Two good online dealers are www.nbwebexpress.com and www.aperfectdealer.com.

I personally wear the Model 1008 and recommend them very highly.

I stand for 8 to 10 hours every night myself and what I wear is skateboarding shoes. It's what my feet are used to since I skate every day, but really like others said they're very comfortable. Certain brands have more arch support than other and a lot of the designs on them these days aren't the greatest looking thing out there, but you can still find plain solid colored ones and similar style. A lot of the shoes have very good cushioning incorporating a lot of different technologies. Some of my preferred brands are Circas, Adios and Vans, but Vans don't usually have much arch support.

I can also vouch for their toughness. Skate shoes are design for people who jump off 15 foot ledges all day and grind the sides of their shoes with sandpaper for hours on end. If you buy skate shoes not to skate but just to wear, they can easily last over 5 years from what I've seen.

Don't know what size you wear but if you have a big foot like me these two sites might not be much help, but if you look around they both have a sale section.

www.ccs.com
www.activemailorder.com

Another site I haven't personally used but I hear good things about (Free overnight shipping both ways - can return the shoe if it doesn't fit right) is www.zappos.com

I second the Etnies, there good fitting shoes and long lasting, if your not skating in them !!! I also recommend a pair of Han-Wag boots, there the best iv ever owned by a very long way !!!

Yeah, Doc's are great when you are on your feet all day. I had a pair of Mephisto's once that were great, too. I got them on clearance - otherwise I would never have bought them as they are almost unbelievably expensive.
