Anybody here like Smith and Wesson knives

I think they make a good beater knife...you know the kind you might leave in the glove box of your car/truck or in your tackle box. I gave one to my son after he lost a nice Benchmade and it has served him well. For about 20 bucks more you can upgrade to a CRKT.

I use beaters all the time.

The only reason I will not purchase a S&W is because of their tendancy to very closely copy other work (specific designs from makers and others) without permission (I am not talking about older patterns that have been around for years). That type of practice just goes against a lot of things that I find appealing about the knife industry.

It may be legal, but in my pinheaded brain it "ain't" right. So I choose not to support them. As James used to say YMMV.

In a word...NO! Not because of the obvious relationship to that usurper of personal freedoms _&_, but because they are made by United Cutlery and are essentially JUNK! Save your $$$ and buy a real knife

But guys, what about the tactical whistle neck knife?

They do have a tendency to borrow on others great designs. Compare the aforementioned knife and a Ralph strait Krait. The resemblence is uncanny. Plus, I just don't trust their locking mechanisms.
I have seen too many fail even the weakest spine whack test. If you get one, just go over it carefully to make sure you got a good one.

I don't like some S&W knives, not because of the name, but because of Taylor Cutlery who uses the S&W name to produce cheap products using the S&W name. One thing is jumping on the band wagon, but at least come up with something original. Look at the "Cuttin Horse" models. I also remember when they first started to sell the SWAT knives, obviously imported, but the boxes were marked "Made in USA." I could never buy a product from a company that sets out to deceive the public just to make a sale. Quality? Look at their Cuttin' Horse knives made in China. That says it all. If you want a knife to beat around and not worry about it getting scratched or lost, and don't want to spend too much, check out CRKT, Outdoor Edge, Buck, Gerber and others that sell good usable knives for those on a budget. I know they have corrected the "Made in USA" statement on the box and I know that they have sold many, many SWAT folders, which are ok for an inexpensive knife but until they get with the quality control on their other knives and come up with some original designs, I'll stay away form them.

I've bought several of the SW 2000B for resale, and have only received very positive feedback. Also, I've noted consistant quality out-of-the-box: no blade-play when locked and very sharp! For around $20 it's tough to criticize those who use them and like them.

My first "real" knife was given to me by my favorite Uncle about 20+ years ago, and it was a S&W and had the crest etched in it.

It was about 2.? inches long, and stainless steel all over. That is the knife that got me started in this neverending madness.

Since then, I have lost that loved knife, and on my OWN son's 10'th birthday, I gave him a S&W SWAT Large. He was in awe!!! My wife almost sh*t!!!! She calls it a "weapon", I call it a tool.

But, for a good working knife, the S&W SWAT line is really good. On the weekends, I usually have one in a pouch on my belt. Cuts everything, is cheap, doesn't stain, and sharpens to a razor edge.

Lets put it this way, if someone gave me a case of these knives for FREE, I would have a garbage pail full of Smith and Wesson knives!!! I have handled only a handfull of these knives at a number of different times and EVERY SINGLE ONE was a piece of S H I T!! I did not even have to spine whack them, all I did was try to close it while locked and close it did. Liner sliped every time. I would steer clear of these knives!

I gotta agree with Louis on this one. Fill up a bucket with S&W "knives" and you have pretty much wasted an otherwise good bucket.

I'm going to have to say that S&W knives aren't that bad. I do like the SWAT line, however, I can't support the fact that Taylor knives rip off other companies. I only have one S&W knife, a baby SWAT framelock. I had carried it for about a half a year and it served me well. The lock up was strong and the blade was sharp. For like 20 bucks, you can't go wrong.

Analogy: the people who own BMW 750's look down their nose (even if they deny it) at the 740 owners, the 740 owners look down their nose at the 535 owners, the 535 drivers look down their nose at the 528 owners, the 528 owners look down their nose at the 328 owners, the.....got it? Am I a knife collector or a knife snob? I'm a knife collector - and I started a couple of years ago with a S&W "S.W.A.T." folder purchased at a flea market for $20.00. (Before I had ever heard of design rip-offs, trademark infringement, QUALITY, etc.) That knife piqued my interest in obtaining a better quality knife, a CRKT. From there I went to Benchmade, then to Spyderco, then to Emerson, then to Microtech. Then to customs. IOW, that lowly $20 knife that most "seasoned" knife knuts hold in such disdain, has resulted in my spending literally thousands of dollars with reputable manufacturers and makers. I also collect wristwatches (including several $20k Breguets), but my favourite watch is a $300 sterling silver "tank" style house brand watch that I bought from a local jeweller before they went out of business.

Why did I switch my serious collecting efforts from exotic cars and wristwatches to knives? Because for the price of a cheap (relatively) watch, I can now own a one-of, only-one-in-the-world, piece of useable art from the original maker.

Just my 0.02 worth. (but if you order before midnight tonight, 0.0198!)

I bought a S&W knife before I became 'educated' about the company. It's the same baby framelock that Jazzman mentioned, all in all, it's a very nice litle knife, good fit and finish and it locks up great. Made in ROC.

Every other S&W knife I have ever seen has been a piece of crap. I won't be buying any more of their knives.

O.K., forget about the folders and the spine whack test. What about $20 bucks for the SW990 Hideout Knife, the neck knife with the police whistle built into the handle? I got one and it's an ergonomically efficient and comfortable hanger.

The wife bought me a large S&W SWAT for my birthday. I just did a spine whack test and it failed miserably. It's too bad. The fit and finish stinks, as well as the craftsmanship I guess, but it sure feels good in the hand. S&W copied an excellent design...... and totally botched it up. They better hurry up and steal CRKT's LAWKS mechanism before somebody hurts themselves!

King,
If you're thinking about purchasing an S&W or you currently own one than the question as to what we like is kinda' irrelevant isn't it??

What's important is what you like. Right??

For the record though, I don't much care for S&W, but it's fine with me if you do.

They do make better hangers than users though. What the heck, it was ether this or some black velvet picture of a tiger to hang on the wall.

I like S&W knives! Not the new ones of course, but the older ones, I have a swing blade boot, a shooters lockback and I used to have an older stainless framed, wood inlayed lockback, similar in size to a Buck 110. I am curious as to who made the little S&W autos that can be had in Stag or Wood, that look like the Calif legal Delta Z's. Was it Delta Z? Or a cheap knock off? And what the heck, while we're at it, does anyone have one they want to sell?

Rather have a festering sore on my mouth than own anything S&W, since their betraying the American people with their cave in to Klinton and his cronies.
I look forward to their going belly up!
