Anybody out there a fan of vintage meat cleavers or lamb splitters???

I'm trying to get a cleaver cleaned up right now, it was covered in rust.

Once I started cleaning it up, you can clearly see the metal transition from the soft steel and the cutting steel, and it's got a ton of life left.

Subscribing, maybe I can get some pictures up.

Please do! I love restoration projects.

I think that it would be very possible to use a variation on a Swiss-style cleaver as a "camp kitchen" blade. Almost in the tradition of German hunting trousses, it could have a paring knife and fork piggybacked on the sheath. Chop wood for the fire with it, do game prep, chop veggies...the gears in my head are turning...

Hey Short, this is one beautiful cleaver and it kinda resembles the 'Bow Legged Chopper' from Fiddleback Forge. So what did that run you in Nepal?[/ATTACH]

It was inexpensive, I think about $40. (Plus shipping) I like that FF chopper too.

Got this one this weekend for $20.00.

for outdoor activities, I'm not sure. It is WAY heavier than a hawk, for sure. I think it is a Foster Bros. number 8, but cant read all of teh stamping. If anybody has any info on it, please let me know.

8" blade, 8" handle, 16" OAL, 5/16" thick at the ferrule, distal taper to 3/16" at the hole. The stick tang is threaded with a nut on the end, and i was able to remove the handle no problem.

I've got a wood lathe, I wonder what kind of crazy wood Mark at BurlSource could come up with for me? :)

I've always been a big fan of cleavers. Here's a couple of pics of one I recently made for a coustomer and a few old yardsale specails hanging in my shop.
