Took a few knives apart today for full cleaning and was pretty surprised to see this on not 1 but 2 of the blades.

My mini grip in M4 has the same markings. There have been several others report the same thing. Can't think of a logical reason why they are like that.

It's how they identify the different blade steels during manufacturing.

Think about it. How do you tell a D2 blade from a 154CM blade with no marks - before it's etched and the exact same shape?

Drill holes where no one is supposed to look.

Well the rest of the griptilians/mini griptilians I have taken apart had no holes. These have been 154cm, D2, S30V. So that theory does not make sense.

It is a theory actually, if they had a specific # of holes in each blade steel that would make sense. But...they don't. The link you posted just proved it since that M4 blade has 2 holes and mine has 5 holes. The blade of my other S30V steel grip has 0 holes in it, while the one in the pic has 2 holes in it. I will contact Benchmade tomorrow for the real answer.

I just took apart my Ares to clean it and i also have multiple holes in my blade tang?

Keep it with the 154CM batch, or whatever. There has to be a better system than drilling a bunch of holes in the blade, seriously... Like, using a marker, or a stamp, or a piece of plastic with plastic cuffs, just plastic cuffs, or logo placement (154CM is 1.104cm from the top, D2 is 1.202cm from the top, etc.) or light scratches, etc.

Other companies seem to manage it without drilling holes in the blade.

This is assuming for steel ID isn't the answer... How deep are they? Could they be the necessary holes for a RC tester?

An RC tester leaves a very very small dent in the metal, and they wouldn't test every blade on a mass production knife like the griptilian anyway. :)
