I just found out that my shop will be closed for a week at the beginning of January. Sarah has to work the whole week and the guy I was going to go hunting with for the week just found that his wife has Crohn's disease so needless to say, he has other things to attend to. The good news is that I have decided that this will be when I make my first attempt at making a knife. I finally have all of my stuff together for stock removal, but I just haven't had the time yet to give it a shot. The down side is that I am completely broke and can't even afford to order some steel. The shop has had almost no business lately so I have barely been able to pay my bills. So, if anyone has any pieces they can part with, I would very much appreciate it.

Old files can be found for cheap. That's what I'd recommend starting off with. You don't exactly want to waste a bar of something like S30V or D2 from the start.

I have a full size full tang khukuri that was hardened too much and the edge chipped.

Yangdu at Himalayan Imports is sending me a replacement because she said that it wasn't worth sending it back to Nepal.

Could you use the steel in it for something??

Absolutely recommend the old files. Not only can you find them cheap at the flea market or thrift store but they are actually good steal. You'll want to anneal it. Much easier to work with than if you leave it hard.

Another vote for the file, I made mine from a fully hardened file, it took some time, but a grinder and a belt sander mounted to the desk made it happen.

Remember to keep that blank cool though, a bucket of water is a necessity.

If you'd like a piece of O1 let me know. Make your blade, send it back to me and I'll heat treat and temper it when I do a batch of O1 blades. You can clean it up when I send it back to you.

Most definitely! I'm really trying to scrounge up whatever I can so I'll make use of everything I can find. I've got a whole week to grind. Shoot me an email.

I'm going to hit up my local spots for old tools also and see how many old files I can score.

Word. I'll shoot up there as soon after Xmas as you guys will let me. I've got a special beer I've been guzzling for years for you to try. It's not very common around here so I doubt you've tried it.

Plus I'm only about 20 minutes away from Andy. Could you imagine how horrible that would be if he and I started doing collaboration projects? Between the two of us, no one around here would ever have any money again! LOL If I get good at making knives, everyone is in trouble. ;)

right on dylan... sound slike you're all set man... looking forward to checking out the finished product...:)

if you've got a local junk shop, you could look through therre stuff for some old saws. i got an old saw for 3 dollars and i have gotten 2 blades out of it so far, and i can still probably make about 5 more. plus, its a way of recycling old stuff.
