Anybody watch "out of the wild" on Discovery

My wife and I enjoy watching it. I think that would be a hard trek for sure. I sure don't agree with everything they do, but they are there and I am not.

The wife and I watch it every week. I use it as a learning/teaching tool on what mistakes they made or what they did well. They had a steep learning curve in the very beginning but seemed to pick up as they went along.

I was hoping they would show more on what they taught them and see more on the survival aspect instead of the personnal aspect.

Better that Expedition Africa....

My wife and I enjoyed it too, we really got involved with the cast to my surprise. Sure there were things they did that we questioned, but overall, it was a pretty realistic show and gave the viewers some great visual access to Alaska. One thing that struck me was that if a person were thrown into a situation such as this without the benefit of all the little essentials that they had, there would likely be few survivors in that climate.

My fiance and I watch this show every week. It is the best reality show on TV. obviously they make pour choices on the show, but that is what makes it real. These people have no real experience in the outdoors and they have learned quickly. I am very confidant that if they didn't have survival experts with them the whole way, they would have all given up by now because they would not have the guidance they are provided with. Either way, it is entertaining. I would love to say I could do better than they are doing, but I am sure, if you put me into that situation, the lack of food and physical and mental challenges would probably get me. Sure, most of us have much more knowledge than they do, but until you are there, you just never know. I am surprised the fishing guide gave up, I thought he would have seen it through. I really like what the asian girl brings to the table, she is a tough cookie and knows what she is good at, and what she can do to help. Don't see the blond doing too much though. I haven't seen this weeks episode yet, I am watching it tonight, so don't ruin it for me...

I preferred the show to Man vs. Whatever, and Les's old show. At least this one had an element of reality. One of the best things about the show is that there were no dimwits who were constantly causing squabbles and so forth. Everyone got along, and that was a nice change of pace from what you usually see in these group "reality" type shows.

I definitely like the show ... it's funny how the people I first thought wouldn't last a day proved me wrong and showed some amazing intestinal fortitude and mental toughness throughout.

I agree! Who would have thought the two girls would have made it this far. I thought the two guys that are on there currently, (or at least until the show prior to last night, since I haven't seen it yet) would make it. They seem pretty level headed. I wasn't a big fan of the big cop guy, he seemed out of place, also expended too much energy to get food. The other guys are a lot smarter.

My wife and I have watched every show from the start and have really enjoyed the series. Sure, they may not have the knowledge that a W&SS regular might have, but I think they did really well for a bunch of city kids. I could tell from the beginning that the four that made it were all going to make it unless they died. They all just had that personality.

I thought it was great that Jake was the most hardcore out of all of them. He was a good shot, always worked hard to provide for everyone, and really didn't complain despite miserable conditions. Hopefully that helped some people think about their preconceived notions of others. The other three that made it were great too. John's back was about to cripple him and the two girls were half the size of everyone else, but they all still trudged along. My wife was happy when Cynthia (?) dropped out a mile before the end, since her incessant whining was pretty annoying.

We have been talking about the show for a while on my forums, and I'll reiterate something here that I did there. What on earth were the producers thinking with those horrid Yukon packs? Why give them some seriously nice gear, like Arc'Teryx clothing, high-end sleeping bags, dry sacks, headlamps, etc., and then give them a kick in the balls with those Yukon packs? I understand that they needed tarps for shelter and ground cover, but a tarp straps to the outside of an internal frame pack just fine. I wish they had gone all one way or the other. If they are going to make them carry the stupid packs, have them use furs, waxed canvas, leather bladders, steel canteens, etc. If not, give them some packs that aren't completely terrible. I think I would have made a sled or two if I were in their shoes, since a sled would be highly preferable to those packs.

I liked how they got smarter about the stuff they carried as they went along. I found it pretty entertaining that, in the beginning, they took every single item that they were given, including cast iron pots and pans, a ukulele, ammo cases with tinder, and a million other things.

I found it interesting that two of the most experienced outdoors people dropped out right away (apparently from frustration). I also thought that the limited pace was pretty unrealistic. If you have a map and a compass, you'd be better off covering serious ground in the first few days, rather than stopping for days and gradually robbing your energy reserves from starving. But I guess that was mandated by the producers of the show.

If you think there was any connection to reality in that show, I've got a Civil War Bowie in my pocket for sale................

You know, that was exactly the same issue that I brought up with my wife.
I have used both internal and external frame packs and been happy with both in the appropiate situations. Watching this show was my first exposure to the idea of the yukon pack. One of the first thing I learned when shopping for packs is that most of the wieght is bourne on the hips and that the shoulder straps are there primarily for stability. Anyone who has worn a shoulder-only pack for any time at all will realize how awful it is. 60 lbs is also a very unrealistic for the smaller members of the group. In discussions with my wife and other friends, I suggested that if I were to go on such a trip I would spend a few minutes ahead of time researching a few of the edible wild plants. It may not have helped later on, but early on it could have made a big difference.
I have a question for all of you, the contestants were allowed 1 personal item, what would you take on such a trip.
I have made many backpacking trips here in michigan, although I carried food with me. I have experienced very similar conditions to those on the show, but my pack weight was never more than 40lbs including 2 weeks of food. My gear was not the top of the line stuff, but bought on a tight budget. I did all my food shopping at my local grocery store. I think such a trip would be interesting, but would not be very fun for the shows producers with me along.

thanks,
Del

Del, good points on the packs. A heavy load in a shoulders only pack can completely spoil a trip. BTDT. As for the single personal item, that's easy, a decent sheath knife. Most likely a Scandinavian type with a blade about 4".

I would take a 5 gallon tub of peanut butter. :D

My personal item would be a Busse knife, probably the ASH LE, or the SFNO-LE

I would NOT take the love letter from the boyfriend ! (no, there isn't one!)

I really enjoyed that show.

It was interesting to see who dropped out early in. Even more interesting to see who made it. Very close comparison to what I've seen in real life.

I too wondered why they fit them up with such a horrid pack system. I could improvise a better system with willow branches and paracord.
