Anybody watch "out of the wild" on Discovery

What do you think of this show?
I admit to only seeing one episode of the show. It seemed like a very interesting premis but I was somewhat disappointed in the overly sensational presentaion.

I remember at one point the narrator moaning about how they had to hike six miles(!) across mostly open tundra. So? I mean, I suppose for many city dwellers who don't walk further than from their front door to the car on most days, six miles seems like a lot, but I can regularly put in 12-15 miles up and down mountainous terrain with a pack on my back, and I don't consider myself in particularly good shape (I have a friend who routinly backpacks 20-25 miles per day in the same terrain). I've done packing across open tundra like that myself and its not that hard. I suppose the poor conditions (food, cold, lack of experince) made it worse, but still.

At another point the narrator moaned bout the heavy packs they were carrying (40 pounds?) and I thought to myself, they are not carrying food or shelter in those packs, why are they so heavy?

I guess I just thought it could have been presented better.

I routinely walk 5-10 miles 3-4 times a week. I have just returned from the Grand Canyon and now know that all miles are not equal. A 30 year old attitude with a 68 year old body makes for some interesting sore body parts.

I agree the trek they made didn't seem too intense. I put on more miles than that during elk season, and in worse terrain and often times more snow. But what we do need to remember, these people were only eating in three days what we eat for breakfast. When you guys are out hiking, you routinely stop to eat I am sure. John lost 30 pounds (I think I heard them say) during that time, and he didn't seem to be too big to start with. I have a great deal of respect for the three (even the girl who quit a mile from the finish) for making it 30 days in the wild with little knowledge or experience. That to me is an accomplishment.
If I were to choose one item to take with me-- a satellite phone. If thats not allowed then I would perhaps go for a small axe.

I really liked the show. For some one who really likes nature but never quite get the opportunity to enjoy it, it very enjoyable to watch. I think they deserve a lot of credit, given that they pretty much didn't know what they were doing. If I had a choice of one item to bring, I would carry an Alaskan native for 30 days on my back if I had to. jk Axe and a Bible would be my choice.
