Hi y'all,

Well The goverment propaganda machine had me pretty sure nothing was going to happen... but what if it does?

Anybody have any thoughts on this?

Later,
John

While I think that there will be some minor problems from Y2K, I am REALLY hunkering down for Y3K.
THAT'S when the poop'll hit the props!
(At least that's what my dog told me.)

From what I can tell it's impossible for the average person to sort everything out and come to an educated opinion about Y2K. There's just too much conflicting info.

That's why I've adopted what I believe is the only sensible position right now:

I'm prepared to be wrong about Y2K.

(How about you?)

I am just as concerned about a major earthquake or even a tsunami. At least we will have some warning in this case, as midnight will hit half way around the world first.

Our "govrnmink" tells the mullets that everything is AOK and it will be like a 3 day snowstorm. Yet Feds and state governments are getting ready for what looks like a mini catastrophy or worse!. Military and Guard on high alert. Feds are bunkered down across the country as FEMA has bought up tons of MRE's. Elite politicians in many cities like NYC, Columbus ,Ohio, LA to name a few will be in multi million dollar bunkers while the sheeple above are told nothing will happen! Twelve of our carriers will be in ports and only 2 at sea. US and Russian military personal will sit across from each other in Colorado watching each others missile systems. Town and city police forces are armed to the teeth with military equipment that would make companies in Vietnam looked underarmed! No, I think Feds are worried ,but for whatever reason did not tell the masses the truth. BUt what else is new under the sun? Am i personally worried? Yes, but it wont do any good when your neighbors believe whatever the news media tells them.

Not "worried".....but I will be filling a few water containers (our household supply is pumped from a tank) and will buy a couple of gas cylinders for light and cooking.
I live in the country so I don't have concerns about elevators. No need to fly..so I won't be buying a parachute.
Will charge up the battery for my UHF CB and to keep my mobile phone battery charged. Probably will fill the car's gas tank, too.
But, I believe, our authorities and utilities have the matter covered.
I will let you people know what happens as we are 15-16 hours ahead of North America.
If you don't hear from me soon after midnight in Aus.....feel free to panic.
Oh, yeah...I ran a program from CNet and found my PC will be ok as long as it is not turned on at the rollover point. So I will shut down for an hour or so before and after midnight. I would not be surprised if one or two of my older programs crashes, though.
Just hope no one has sent me one of those nasty time bomb viruses.

And, of course, my fridge will be well and truly stocked with essential fluids.

If you are not laughing, you may as well be crying.

I'm kind of new to the forum, but I think this Y2K stuff is BS. After reading some threads, I kind of like the comments of this vampire guy. And James definitely should worry more about quakes than Y2K. I think after Jan. 1, there will some be some good deals on gas generators. Course, I already have one that I use while hunting, but I will take advantage of the year end specials. You guys have a good one.

I am worried about Y2K but I am more worried about peoples reaction to the event not the situation. We are living in a very troubled times were are children are killing each other at school and it only seems to be getting worse because of the media hype that follows each incident. I am prepared for a mild situation and hope for the best.

Don't think there is much to the Y2K crap
the media puts out, just more media crap. If the big dogs want to hide under a rock that's OK. When the real boss comes back he will find them anyway. After all he is the reason for the season and wise men still worship him..

Y2K isn't crap. It's real. Hoping it will go away and ignoring it doesn't make it go away...

I just hope we don't get booted back into the stone age and only have 4 smilies!

I really don't know what will happen. But where I live the worst that will happen is a power outage and difficulty with food (living on a large island). However, we're used to pwer outages in teh winter that can last days. I have a propane range in my house, a large wood stove, I collect antique lanterns, and we're on a well. I'll be making sure that I've got extra essentials on hand, but mainly I'm taking a wait and see attitude. I don't want to go around like Chicken Little but I don't want to be caught with my pants down either.

There are only two types of people; those who understand this, and those who think they do.

I got off Long Island and out of the city last night. It was a real struggle, seems like a lot of other people had the same idea at the same time I did.

Anyway, I won't be back down there until after the first of the year. I won't have to worry about food spoiling if power goes out, It has gotten cold up here in Gods Country the last few days.

I'm worried my knives are not Y2K ready. What if they don't work after Dec. 31???

Ivan,
I'm active duty military and I am not on high alert...in fact, I am on leave (vacation). If the military was on high alert, I would be recalled.

Opinions, right? Here is mine: If you live in the US, you will wake up and it will just be another day. I think there will be some problems in third world countries. The biggest threat comes from terrorist groups who hope there might be enough confusion for them to get away with some spectatular act. There is no amount of money that would get me to welcome in the millenium at Times Square.

Chief: Agree with you totally about Times Square. I think this will be a good New Year's to stay close to home (Don't overlook the rather large celebration on the Mall in D.C. either). As for Y2K, whatever happens, our gummint will take credit for either preventing it (even if nothing was going to happen) or will take credit for fixing things after they break. And they'll blame the gun owners and manufacturers for all the problems. (Oops, look at the posting time. Merry Christmas, everyone.)

I've gotten a kind of "peaceful paranoia" from this thing.
I'm more worried about crazy people giving in to irrational behavior than I am about mass blackouts and out of control cruise missles flying overhead.
I think the REAL crazie's are gonna come out of the closet en-masse on 1-1-00 and the left wing media is gonna be all over it like BladeForumites on a found Sebenza, causing the general population to freak out to the nth degree and resulting in widespread feelings of volitile insecurity.

BUT! I could be wrong...

See you at the riots! Be sure to wear your BladeForums name tag so we can all say "Hi!" to each other!

So, what IS the speed of dark?

Ah Y2K. Possibly the best publicized non-event in history.

Seriously, I'm not the least bit worried about the computers. I'm a little worried about the people, though. Happy New Year.

For those of us in the USA, we should have strong indicators of what will likely happen several hours before Jan. 1st even hits the east coast. Fiji will be the first "major" area to see what Y2K may bring, with the Australian metropolitan cities giving us the biggest indicator of what we are in for. A few hours may not be much, but it is better than nothing. This whole Y2K ordeal is really pissing me off, and it hasn't even occured yet.
