I just caught an ad in the November Blade magazine for Mastersmiths, a knife shop on 58th Street between Sutton Place and First Avenue in NYC. I looked at their Web site (http://www.beautifulblades.com/), which shows a nice lineup of custom knives and production models. Have any of you visited the shop? Paragon may be in for some serious competition.

All you Noo Yawkers ought to git on over there and post a report....

see if it is worthwhile to pay a buttload of money for parking.
:D

Take the / and ) off the end of the addy ;)

I may take a walk over there one day as well.
Thanx for the heads up :D

Got to see the site..Thanks....nice selection but at least 35 to 50 % more than any one of the ones he has listed that I own.....very expensive even by NY standards......

I will stop in when I'm in the neighborhood, but it doesn't appear to be worth a special trip.

I went there as stated and was there for two hours talking to Bill Malloy- owner of MasterSmith http://www.beautifulblades.com.

His site does not do his shop justice. He caters to Tatical knives mostly. He has Spydercos,Benchmade knives. He has alot of customs Wally Hayes, J.D.Smith, Bud Nealy etc.

He is friendly and is willing to learn. If he see something he doesn't like with a knife he fixes it. If he sees a knife that will look better with a custom leather sheath and not kydex, he will get it done.

He has a small but comfortable shop, he will sit down with you and talk about what you want.

Stop by the shop. Just don't let a website be your first impression, you will miss alot.

Oh, he takes a hour off for chow and opens back up. Sunday and early mornings by appointment.

Tell him I sent ya. A good shop finally in our fair city.

Phil, you are back in NY? We need to hook up someday.

Which ones do you have?

There will be some mark ups , which is normal. If you buy from a maker you will be above or below it cost.

I'm back, let's meet up at Mastersmith one day you can introduce me to the owner.

Email me.

I have the Benchmade Appartion which I paid $89 for at Knifestore a EBAY store at their buy it now price, I paid $28 for a Chive at Walmart on LI, and I got the Leek for around $50....those three are all double on his site.....

Ok an auction site, discount bulk store and the leek from some where. I can't compare the first two Ebay and Walmart .

Go to Paragons and see their prices. That is a good knife selction comparison. I will do that tomorrow.

What is the sales tax for Nassau and Suffolk now?

He got good stuff, I will support his store. Good custom and production knives.

We will all find something cheaper some where else.

This seems like a place worth visiting. It's nice to have a convenient place to see and handle knives. The NY knife shows demonstrate that there is a lot of demand for cutlery in New York City.

You can't compare brick and mortar prices with internet prices.
And Wallyworld sells wallyworld type products.
Meaning you won't find a Meerdink at wallyworld.

The biggest reason for his pricing would probably be rent.
Manhattan rent aint cheap.
No rent control for businesses.
I'll cruise by one day...Maybe someone can post the weekday closing times?

Bill just sent me (2) knives by J.D. Smith to photograph for JD and himself. Going back to Mastersmiths when done.

I suspect he will do whatever it takes to be successful.
