Anyone Carry A Small Texas Jack?

Your original and most recent pics look somewhat less "pennish" and sorta "wharncliffish". Maybe its just the camera angle. But glsj1011's pics definitely are different AND he makes reference to a modified pen blade. I'm wondering if he did the mod himself, or if it came that way from Case. ................. ?????? I realize there's also the possibility that I'm just stupid!

I agree, it looks "wharncliffish", and I can tell you that it is different that my other 4 Case knives which have pen blades that have a noticably more rounded belly.

Kidwholaughs, if you can shed some light on Coyote's question, I'd be interested in hearing it also. Can you post your 2cents here?

I did notice, on a site bookmarked as s.h. on my computer, that they had a Key Lime Bone Medium Texas Jack that looks like it has the modified pen blade on it. However, the Amber Bone one looks like a normal pen blade. In their description they both just say "pen blade", though.

Sorry I couldn't respond sooner. I can't really remember where I bought mine from, but i remember the description said that the secondary blade was a modified pen. I believe mine looks different from some of the other ones pictured because it has been in my pocket for every day for over a year now, and has been used and sharpened alot. I believe it appears to be more of a wharncliffe shape now due to all the sharpening. I guess now the more i look at it the more it does look different from when i first got it. Hopefully this can clear up some of the confusion!

Hi gls1011,

Thanks very much for the clarification, and sorry to hear about the eye injury. Hope you are feeling better.

Hey Doug,

As far as I know all the Texas Jack produced had Modified wharncliffe pen blades. The current production are in Amber Bone CV and Key Lime SS at 3 1/2". Case also produce a Medium Jack that a quater inch shorter at 3 1/4" with a secondary pen blade.
Correction:Acutally, I may have to eat my words because that Amber Bone Texas Jack looks different than what I have. Even though I ordered it from the same dealer. I can say for sure that Case did make the Amber Bone Texas Jack in modified wharcliffe pen blade. I am guess that there were two production runs ? This is truly perplexing. We need a CASE expert to break it down for us.

kidwholaughs,

Thanks for the response, and info. And yes, the Amber Bone pictured does look like a regular pen blade. My 2008 knife looks very different from the one pictured. I guess both types are out there.

I dug out my 62032 Case small Texas Jack in CV. It has the standard pen blade, for whatever that's worth.

Here's mine. I got it long ago but didn't carry it as it sorta thick and doesn't work in my back pockert. But I like the knife.

*sighs* this thread made me buy Case Texas Jack Amber Bone with CV blades... I am too easilly affected these kinds of threads... Texas Jack is really nice lookign pattern with better blades than trapper. I find pen blade usually more... useful than speyblade... That still doesn't mean I won't get Trapper...

It's great knife and the good folks at Case can use all the new fans they can get. You'll love it.

I got one two or three months ago that's become one of my regulars.

I've had one for about a year now and it hasn't seen much pocket time because I carry a stockman at work and kinda save it for good. The pen blade on mine is the modified warnie. Could they put that on the stockman or does it need to be crinked? That would be cool.

Congrats on choosing a good knife, and I've got the same problem.:(

Seems like the modified pen blade is the norm in recent years. I'm very happy with mine. I just can't decide which I like better the Texas Jack or the Canoe.

On another note, this is the first I've carried a CV knife. I was concerned about rusting, but thought I'd give it a try. Although I've remembered to wipe it down pretty regular, and keep some oil on it, I forgot to wipe it down at the end of the day, yesterday. Just now I checked the blades, and the portions of the blades that are exposed above the scales are speckled. I've wiped them down, and now they are less noticable and blackish in color. It doesn't look bad, but it did remind me that I am going to have to maintain these blades better.

I did some reading on Patina on this site, and afterward decided to slice up an apple and a potato. These gave the blade a nice, flat grey (instead of the original mirror polish) look, with a little darker speckling. It looks really nice, and now the speckles that I originally commented on, are all but invisible. I didn't want to force a dark, artifical patina, and I'm happy with how this turned out. My goal was to hopefully provide the blades with a little more protection by doing more of a controlled rust (thought of it like the old timers with their rust "blued" muskets).

I was worried because there are so many pictures in this thread of knives that are being carried, but as mentioned do not yet have any patina. My blades speckled very noticably, even though they had been wiped with an oil rag (of Eezox) a day or two before. I use Eezox on my carry guns and have never had one rust. I don't even remember breaking a sweat either. I know it can be humid in a pocket, but I wanted to experiment and get control of this before it was an issue. Maybe it was my body chemistry, or maybe I somehow got my knife wet without realizing it.

Here are some pictures of the before and after. The original speckling went the entire length of the blades, on the portion that extends above the scales (on both sides). The second picture was taken indoors in poor lighting, so it isn't as clear as the original (taken outdoors without flash), but it captures the difference in the blades, pre-patina and post very accurately.

Glad to see you allowing the patina to form and not forcing it. I forced a couple of blades on a stockman and they just don't have the good looks of the one that came about from use.

Can someone post a pic of the small jack next to a peanut? I have a Case peanut, and it's a great knife, but a little too small for my tastes. I'm thinking about picking up a small jacknife, but it is dependent on the size.

Currently, I'm carrying a wharnecliffe mini trapper, but I got it as a gift from my kids for Father's Day, and I have this underlying nagging concern that I'm going to lose it.

Does the small jack compare in size to the peanut, or is it more in line with the mini trapper?

Thanks.

Here are a couple of quick pictures taken in poor lighting. The Texas Jack is a much more comfortable to use knife IMO.

Check out a Medium Jack.
Its lighter and about .25" shorter than the small texas jack.
Looks alot like your peanut, but a tad larger.
