Believe it is more about giving yourself a hobby something to look forward to...getting "your next knife" most people collect because it gives them a life outside of everyone's daily hustle and bustle in life which can become as routine as putting something on your feet every morning and this can become very mediocre (ordinary · common · commonplace · indifferent · average · middle-of-the-road · middling · medium · moderate · everyday · workaday · tolerable · passable · adequate · fair · inferior · second-rate · uninspired · undistinguished · unexceptional ~ guess to sum it up, it gives people something to do and brings a little bit of happiness into their lives ~ everything can easily turn into vanity and vexation ~ Balance is the KeyA while ago I posted a thread where I no longer feel the urge to get any of the new knives since even those I already have are overkill.
I sold and gifted away most of what I had, and still when I watch knife video or see another new knife, it takes me very little to remember "I already have a knife that can do that" or something like "why would I baton a nail with a knife???"
Then, if you buy something really expensive, you might not even use it, so you paid for expensive knife just to keep using a cheap knife.
And if you have a lot of stuff you don't use - after a while you start schratching your head thinking "What am I going to do with them? Why did I buy this?"
Then realization that even after you sold something you never used, you still lost money in the process.
And price doesn't always guarantee performance either, or it at least isn't proportional. For example - Rockstead. I know it's more about the looks, but still.
There's huge variety of knives out there in huge variety of steels. After even trying "super steels" I kinda feel as if that's it. What drives knife sales is more often wishes than needs. And the more knives you have, the less that excitement about your newest knife lasts. It's very similar to an addiction. Especially if you start looking for excuses to get yet another knife you know you'll never use.
The more I use what I have, the less I feel I need something more, and the more I know what I like, and I know that 3V, D2, 1095, and AUS8 will always be in my inventory.
Just take it slow and maybe start a fund and a list. Add to the fund a bit every month and if you find a knife on your list you can get it. You don't have to get them all in a day and often our wants fade with time.I could buy a hundred more knives... it's truly an issue of I can't keep spending money. I might even have to sell some PM2s for a .30 cal air gun. I do NOT want to do that. I have never sold a knife, only intend to sell some Kaiser multiples I have, and do not buy knives with the intent to sell, I think this comes from back when I was a kid, every knife I had was golden and speical and instantly "mine", even if it was not quality.
I'm kind of done for now though - I want some things like a Shaman, Native Chief, Police, Stretch, Para3, I want more fixed blades (Just got a Buck 119 and a 3V Puukko) as well as a custom fixed balde, and slipjoints, I want some specific SAKs, all the Opinel line, a couple more other knives of that ilk, too... some more kitchen cutlery, a few reverse S knives to complete my collection... but that's it so far.
Yeah, that is a good idea, moderation and steady funding. I literally am not even checking Knifeswap anymore because I go too ham on there... Every time I check it, I want something... I go on the other day, boom, S30V/420HC Leatherman Wave.Just take it slow and maybe start a fund and a list. Add to the fund a bit every month and if you find a knife on your list you can get it. You don't have to get them all in a day and often our wants fade with time.
Very true. Just when I was ready to buy a Benchmade Anthem the stop making them and you have to pay a premium now. I think that's the one that hurts the worst for me.One problem with “taking it slow” is, the knife manus like to up and discontinue making their knives, out of the blue.
If that were the case the government would oweWe should get a special tax break for doing our part in keeping the economy treading water.
