Anyone else have a 3V knife outperform their Busse?

It is indeed! :)

My 3V and INFI knives have run neck and neck. My SHe and Fehrman First Strike have battled each other to a stand. I cant truthfully say one has any advantage over the other, but its in normal use, not scientific analysis.

Only in the Busse forum can so many great makers chime in on one of our threads.

Such a great place.

Dozier's D2 is what all hunting knives should be made out of imo.

Nope, he hasn't changed. Paul's shop does my heat treating. It is especially important with 3V that it be done exactly right. Anything less is just not 3V.

Will, it's been too long, bud.

Thanks Jerry--has definitely been too long my friend. Really good seeing you post here (BFC).

This thread, and the Busse family in general are awesome. Not only have we been able to freely speak our minds about other brands vs Busse and not get bashed fanboy style, but It almost seems encouraged. (Which it should be for honest discussion.) This is so refreshing, it looks like I found a sub forum where I feel free to speak my mind. What a concept.

Now, just impatiently waiting on some INFI. :)

A couple of years ago I took my 18 year old son to the Moran school of knife making. Of course I wore my Flaming INFI shirt the whole time. The next to last day of the school I busted out my Camp Tramp. The instructor just kind of mumbled it couldn't compare to a forged blade. So I called Busse when we got back to the hotel. The Janitor answered and he said give it the test. I cut the 1" rope no problem, hacked the 2x4 no problem. I then clamped it in the vise. I couldn't bend it with my own strength. Now I'm 300+ so that's one tough blade. I had to put a 3' cheater on the handle to bend the blade, and then I had a hell of a time. It finally snapped at around 45 degree bend but I was rocking the blade to get it to bend. I am confident that if I could have bent it in a steady motion it would have passed the flex test. If there are any doubts I filmed the bend.

See and that's the thing..yes its a busse forum busses primarily being knives..means we all have an appreciation for all things sharp and pointy lol as long as they are quality. And busse is just the icing on the proverbial cake. And for a forum to be open as this is rare to say the least, esspecially in a thread like this. Its pretty amazing ! Its great to hear and value others opinion and experience.

I am NOT taking any sort of stand regarding the ABS test procedure, or on the idea that FORGED is better than WHATEVER ELSE.

However, the basic ABS test procedure that is set up for students coming out of that school is to teach VERY BASIC IDEAS of THERMO-MECHANICAL MANIPULATION and HEAT TREAT METALLURGY.

IT IS BASIC. If you can leave the school with this information it puts one on the way to pursuing whatever level of quality one chooses to pursue.

Is it fair to do a back-to-back performance test using a forged knife using a simple HT formula and a BUSSE knife using an extremely tested and perfected steel/HT formula?

NO. It is neither fair nor especially telling.

Obviously the BUSSE will prove itself superior.

The thread is about 3V and OUTperformance.

Did anybody define what the word "performance" means?

There has been a WHOLE lot of words flung at this very subject.

At this point I have flung too many.

Mr. Busse said what needed to be said.

Shane

Performance is different things to different people. .depends what you want the steel to do..I think the op was saying they thought that 3v stayed sharper longer..does that mean out perform in all aspects. .no certainly not. And being there are so many variables involved..ht being ahuge part of that. So really its just turned to an experience discussion.

Good stuff, leatherman.
Have you ever tested Dozier's D2?
Its been a few years, but I got to use one for a bit, darn things just wont dull! They cut like mad and Dozier puts a fantastic edge geometry of his stuff. He makes a skinner and round knife that are on my bucket list. :)
Nice post.^
Dozier has that ergo-thing down also.
THe ergo's were wonderful on the example I used.

I had the pleasure of checking out a Dozier K2. That was indeed a nice knife, felt great in hand and fit and finish was excellent. It wasnt mine so i cant say much about sharpening or edge retention, but i didnt want to give it back to the owner after holding it.

Hey Rolf, if you like threads comparing Infi to other steels/designs here is a link to a thread I did back in 2010.

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...all-Knife-Carve-Off-quot-Infi-v-the-Rest-quot

The Busse Forum has always been well disposed to discussion on steels/designs/comparisons.

I didn't have a 3V blade to throw into the mix in this review but there are plenty of exotic top steels and an assessment of design/edge retention.

Infi for me is the ideal steel for large chopping blades or heavy use (any size) blades. A great all rounder.

Really cool Peter

I have been impressed with Nick Wheelers' HT of W2 and other steels. Brad Stallsmith at Peters' HT should be mentioned as well.

Dan

Gayle Bradley told me Brad Stallsmith @ Peters has the capacity, with nitrogen-induction to a furnace, to take a blade from over 1800 deg F to ambient in under 4 seconds. Incredible level of sophistication.

Also, it was good to read the endorsement of Nick's W2 from someone with your level of experience and expertise. Thank you very much for taking the time to participate here--valuable contribution.
