Anyone else lighten their buying habits?

I am interested in a number of blades but knife prices seem to be significantly higher in 2018. So much that I have been looking more at firearms/optics than knives. Everything is limited addition anymore which in some cases adds to the cost with no real steel upgrade. Saw a commercial trying to sell a limited edition bed. What next, limited edition soap, limited edition toilet paper, limited edition cheese.... it never ends

I have some limited edition toilet paper with a former president 's face on it. LNIB.

Being disabled, I haven't been able to work in almost two years, so I have no money for any knives. I'm happy with what I have thankfully. Just found my Case copperhead in a pair of gym shorts. It's been missing since September.

K.O.D. I agree, sometimes I equate buying a knife with happiness. I need to use and enjoy the blades I have. When I get the knife, I am already looking for the next. Maybe I need to re-evaluate my purchasing habits.

I think I’ve only spent my own earned money on one knife in quite a while, and it wasn’t an expensive one either. I have done some trading, gotten knives as gifts, or used gift money to get where I am now, and honestly I’m real happy with my collection. I would like to see if the lil native could replace my DF2, though. The g10 DF2 is an awesome feeling knife, just not fun to play with.

Ive slowed down to a crawl ;I do see a knife on the exchange I might go for, other than that I'm like sgt Schultz; I see nothing !

Between Christmas, my daughter's birthday, family visiting, etc. I've been shelling out a bunch of my extra cash that I set aside for fun stuff.
Next month I'll be taking a vacation and very likely buying a new revolver, so I'll probably hold off a while longer on any new knives.

Once upon a time I would snatch up everything I liked, but lately I have limited myself to only a couple knife purchases hopefully for the year. Has anyone else scaled back their knife buying?
I'm always in a refinement process with "stuff" - so I have been selling a lot of knives and moving that capital into other knives, usually more expensive ones. I have been able to identify what makes me happiest with knives, and have been choosing those that best suit my criteria. I'm not limiting myself per se, but I am trying to not spend out of the bank account very often, and just move knife money around. The goal is to not end up with knives I don't truly enjoy owning/collecting and have a collection where everything is relevant and well selected. It's very expensive buying and deciding I don't like a knife - since I always sell at a loss (minus one time).

Yes, used to buy a lot but getting married two years ago slowed that down considerably.

All but quit actually. Only come on here to keep my finger on the pulse of knife world. It is nice no longer being on the hamster wheel like I always have to have the latest thing to come out. I constantly see knives that a few months ago I would have been selling everything to get. Now, eh, so what. There will be another right behind it in a month. Last year probably bought 20. This year might buy 1 or 2, if that.

Binge and purge cycles. Purged all but 3.

The market seems odd these days. Slow and saturated.

I want to lighten up my knife buying, honestly I do. Soon as I get the one out of the mailbox today I'm going to. And I honestly believe I will, sometimes for an entire week.

My knife budget has moved to firearms. My wife carries a SAK classic on her keychain but that is all that interests her. She is interested in firearms tho. She got her CPL and we built her an AR. We are on a strict budget but it's easier (and more fun) to justify $ for firearms when the wife is on board.

I like to buy buy buy.

And if I end up not loving it then I sell it.

My budget is "don't spend anything ridiculous on one knife".

I just bought a couple folders at $240 each and a fixed bkade for $250. That's $730 on three knives which is fine with me. But I would not spend that much on just one knife. Not comfortable with that.

I have almost 50 knives and the majority were bought in the last 6 months. I’m slowing down only because I have a great collection of knives and don’t really NEED anything else. Big, small, serrated, PE, H1 for fishing, different steels, large fixed for camping, etc. I am covered.

Unless I see an amazing knife on super duper clearance, I won’t be buying much moving forward.

But I use all of my knives and have never spent over $200US for a knife, so my hobby isn’t as costly as many with safes full of Shiros, CRKs, Hinderers, etc.

Im spending the same amount but this year I am looking at 2 or 3 vs the 8 I bought last year.

Pretty similar to the way I was buying firearms for a while. I was casting a broad net and picking up everything. Then over a few years I whittled it down to 1-2 a year but I was putting nearly a year of thought into each purchase. Hell its been a couple years now that I haven't bought a firearm.

Having a baby defintly dappens my knife habit!

Congratulations!

Ah, the joys of being a responsible adult! I keep looking at all these great toys, then I think about how much college tuition is likely to be for my boys.

If your boys are still young, stop buying knives and start buying LEGOS and Nerf guns. Knives will still be around in a few years, your boys wont. Over the years I probably dropped a few large into that stuff. I regret nothing. A Buck or two each month into a 529 college fund is a good idea too. ;)

I started curbing my spending last year, when my monthly expenses went up $600/month. I was expecting that to end in January, but it didn't; so I've put the brakes on hard (after 8 months, I'm starting to feel the squeeze of that increase). I have bought no new knives, and only have two purchases planned. One is a CF Spider Monkey with anodized liners from Whitty, just because I want to see if I like the lighter version. If I'm not convinced there is a reason to keep it AND my copper version, it won't stick around for long. The other is a Wayfarer - the money for that is sitting in my PayPal account; so I'm working out the details with Eugene.
I rather like my current attitude toward knives; so I plan on sticking with it for a while, even after my expenses are back to normal. Still struggling with the idea of liberating some fixed blades and swords, though...maybe some day.

I've become a fan of my particular knife tastes and have picked 5 that I believe I can live with for basically all of my needs.
The other 50-60 will start appearing on the exchange next week.
Mountain bike season is coming up quick and Barman needs a pile of parts. ;)
So no more buying for the foreseeable future. Definitely a change for me, I get the DTs just thinking about it.
Interested in hearing what your 5 blades are. Maybe for another thread? Don’t want to hijack:)

I’ve slowed to a crawl in buying because:
1) I really like what I have. Still considering downsizing another folder or two.
2) The rising cost of knives. I’m not seeing as much value anymore, at least compared to what I already have.

I switch out gear interests, too. To fund it, I use the gear I like as a motivator/reward for getting rid of bad habits.

For example, if you smoke, calculate how much you spend each year, then figure out what knives you can buy with that instead. Use your love of knives to motivate you to quit smoking.

The right reward can be a powerful source of self-discipline!
