Anyone else lighten their buying habits?

I am slowing way down. I don't know how many purchases I will make in the future, but it won't be many if at all. I have been slowly weeding my collection down to my very favorites. I bought a lot of knives in the past, but mostly to try this or that. Now I know what I like and who makes it(or them)

I have stopped buying as many and also have lightened up by buying lighter weight folders. Just can't see the sense of carrying anything more than 3 or 4 ounces because there's great blades with fine steel available in that weight category. One of my favorites is the Spyderco lightweight Manix in S90v and S110v.

I'm pretty selective these days in terms of what I like and what I'm willing to spend.

Over the years, my buying habits have ebbed and flowed. Some of that has been because of waxing and waning interest; some of it because of waxing and waning budget. The last two years have been a heavy buying time because both interest and budget have been high. When that changes, I'll "lighten up." :)

Once upon a time I would snatch up everything I liked, but lately I have limited myself to only a couple knife purchases hopefully for the year. Has anyone else scaled back their knife buying?

I think this happens to most of us. When we first get into knives we are often buying on hype or whatever looks cool to us. Often there are knives that become popular in the community and we feel like we need them.

For example I remember when the HTM Gunhammer was coming out and everyone wanted one. I thought I wanted one too but never got one. (Thank god there were apparently HUGE f&f issues to the point HTM became known for putting out almost all defective knives. My one knife from them had a defective lock, luckily I was able to fox it)

After some time collecting I now know better what I want in a knife. Now there are lots of knives I think are cool, but only a few I would actually buy. I know what I want in a knife and so most knives are just fashion pieces to me.

You know a good spin off thread to this would be "What would you tell yourself if you were just getting into the hobby." I'm not that far in, but my simple advice would be "Skip amazon, save your -starter knife money- wait a little more, spend a bit more." while I don't hate my initial buys, I feel like I wouldn't have missed out on anything if I had gotten a ZT instead of 5-6 budget knives. I suppose it would have been actually more of a "Leap instead of Jump" type of deal.

Being a stay at home Dad I haven’t really purchased any knives in a long time, with the exception of a few Vic Classics. I have been hanging out here a lot more the past couple of months, and there are a few knives I’d like to have ( BM Proper/Bugout, and Spyderco Para 3) however my Mini Grip and SAKS cover all my needs. My other option is to save for a Small Sebenza 21 With micarta inlays. I feel like I would be happier saving for the Sebenza, but would be hard spending it so i don’t know will see.

I’ve been slowing down myself and recently even sold off a lot of my collection. I am definitely going to pick up a Lum Tanto next week though.

Well, just about 2 months into 2018 and I haven't bought any knives. As I said in the new years resolution thread awhile back, I'm trying to cut down on the knife buying. Already cut firearm purchases last year, but there always seems to be something new that catches my interest and knives are no different. Just going to take it slow and watch my spending on knives. I really have everything I need and many that I have never used. Last year, I pretty much didn't buy any knives until a show in March. We'll see if that show is on this year and take it from there. I skipped Blade last year because of expenditures during March.

Added: Just did some checking, there is a knife show in Dalton Georgia on March 2nd and 3rd sponsored by Bruce Voyles. I'll be there. We'll see how much damage the show does to my wallet this year. It is a fun show. Lots of slip joints if you like them.
