Anyone else not quite "feeling it" anymore?

Well, I had a goal to find a good folder for EDC and a Good Field Fixed Blade... I fell into the rabbit hole and always wanting the next best steel...

I have also calmed down and have not purchased a knife if going on 4+ Months. I have a lot of knives that get put away and have narrowed down to less then 4... Pretty much done although I want to buy more knives I have to ask myself "Do I really need this...?" of course the answer is always NO...!

Of course not, but may-be..

Well, to be honest I'm not here to keep anyone in business and sure won't support those ones who charge $500 up to $1500 for a pocket knife no matter, how smooth action it has.
There has to be a limit.
Me either, I was kinda sarcastic there. I'm OK with what I have.

Somehow I doubt people would stop buying.

Why people buy Leica if you can get much better camera for 1/3 of a price?
Why someone would buy a Gucci bag? Is it really for $3000 more quality in this bag?
Why someone would buy Medford? Is there really so much more quality in there as the price suggests?
They won't all stop buying. But lots of manufacturers have priced themselves out of many people's lists.
I don't know or care who will keep buying stuff at luxury prices - but I know that I won't.

ā€œNot feeling it anymoreā€ because I suspect your current collection already fills all your needs, which is good for your wallet lol. I’m quite happy with my small fixed blades, folders, and choppers. I don’t see the need for $500+ pieces.
I'm on the same page. Recon1 and Izula can basically cover all EDC needs for me. Without even thinking of small TOPS fixie or K390 Endela...

And large fixed blades... any of 3 that I have will do. And none of it was crazy expensive.

A knife needs to cut, and you can achieve that one requirement with low end budget steel, so with that out of the way, how expensive does a knife truly need to be?
These prices are to lure collectors into new heights of collection ownership that often comes with it, feelings of security and pride, to own something not a lot of people have, something odd, bizarre, hard to find. It's easy to find ridiculous knives at ridiculous prices because the fear of missing out is real for a lot of people, it's usually the one thing that makes someone purchase the knife.
likely the knife will never get used, but they own it, it's theirs, not yours, and that's what matters for most people and exists beneath the surface where logic and reason is seldom found

Well there is some difference. And I can feel it.

Example:
My K390 will cut way longer than my VG10 and have more edge stability.

My 3V will cut way longer than my SK5 and have more edge stability.

But all 3 of these knives are under 200 a piece.

And with higher price you get what? I'm willing to bet that there's plenty of overpriced folders that perform worse than say Spyderco K390 models

It's largely the price of titanium and the fact that the handle, I'm sorry "scales" are pure titanium.
I don't need titanium to be on anything of mine, I'm OK with stabilized wood, delrin, polymer, g10

I like high end knives. I don’t collect anything else, so I’m not spending money on any other luxury items.

Tools are tools, guns are guns, and they serve specific purposes for me. Knives on the other hand let me enjoy owning something with craftsmanship and/or unusual materials, or something that is just plain fun and interesting to me.

It is also kind of fun/interesting to me to know that I have something that not a lot of people have. I guess that’s ā€œpride of ownershipā€.

My knife interest has been slowly waning over the last several months. The picture posting issue on this site has really pushed it. I have little interest in this forum anymore and certainly will no longer be a paying member.
I have more knives than I’ll ever need, there may still be 1 that I want though.

Most people here have enough knives to last several generations, especially the amount of "babying" that's put into knife ownership, shelf queens and and safety queens, buying before it disappears forever, and placed in a climate controlled case. It gets to be overwhelming, for me at least. At one point in time I had over 50 fixed blades, all averaging 110-225 price range and over 95% never saw use, those are all gone now. It was just a money trap. I want/need 3 solid performers, and that's all

So now you hang around just to tell us (over and over) how much you don't need knives and you can get by with x, y, and / or z.

What you're really saying, I guess...is that you need other folks who are still enjoying, collecting, using or amassing knives to proselytize to.

It reminds me of someone who quit drinking but doesn't have a local AA meeting to go to. 🄳

You talk about shelf queens and climate controlled cases? When I sold off my Randall collection, one of them was a number 5 I think, the one called a cam,p and trail knife. It had seen duty on some canoe camping trips with the family, and a few motorcycle camping trips. It had a few scratches on the blade from use, and the original edge had been sharpened. WOW, you should have heard the crying of the Randall fan boy at a knife show where I was selling them off. "Oh man! It's been used. And you've sharpened it! Oh GOD, you've ruined it!"

I ruined it by using it for what it was designed for by Bo Randall? REALLY??!!

It gets silly stupid after a while. When they consider it ruined because it was actually used to cut with, then the cult worship mania has went overboard.

Carl, you can find that attitude everywhere. There are custom Bose collectors who wouldn't dream of using a pristine knife. There are custom Bose collectors who use every single knife of Tony's they own. Same goes with car enthusiasts, record collectors, beer mugs, coins, stamps, Hummels etc etc.

Which one is right?

Are we going to invalidate folks based upon their preferences...and what brings them joy? This isn't the Taliban Knife Forum...enjoy 'em how you choose to. If we can't respect the fact that others here enjoy knives for any of several reasons...then what's the sense of having this community? To gripe about those who do?

What's next? Only two pairs of pants. Three changes of underwear?

I have knives I enjoy as much as, or more than the artwork I have hanging on my walls. I have knives I love to be able to use for mundane things or in the outdoors. Which one is correct?

Maybe I'll just start dropping in on random threads and telling folks, "you know, you really didn't need that knife". (You could've bought a pair of sensible shoes.)

I think we should get back to discussing knives. I'm not quite feeling this anymore.
