Anyone else not quite "feeling it" anymore?

Interesting topic .... I was into vintage AL MARS, then went sogs, then went to HIGHER END RANDALLS, RUANAS, etc from 2000 to 2018, then dropped out SOLD OFF a bunch, then go back in 2023 ...
during my off time I got into watches..... I have never been the type to make money on the swaps... sometimes I do but I usually buy too high since I want what I want...

Now I got odd taste for vintage art knives. like levine and others

My wife sure wishes I had your problem. I had a small collection prior to joining BF. Its been a couple months and my addiction has been out of control. I tell myself this is it for a while - but just like a fat kid in a candy store with money in his pocket - I cave. I bought 50~ ish new blades, ranging from $60 to $1000, and tripled my collection in just a couple months. 😳

Hello ... my name is Dennis and I am a bladeaholic.

My wife would divorce me if i spent our money on all that stuff,
I hear young Jordan's voice echo in the room just now --- "stop it ... get some help"

My advice would be to start really using your knives (I know it's hard to use all of them if there is around 50). That puts it in perspective how much (or little) you actually need, and you also know what works for you and what doesn't.

And that some "super steels" aren't that super...

I vote for selling off everything and keep the top 5 you simply can't part with and then --- use the stupid out of those knives, when they get that sheen that only a well used knife gets, so many scratches, scuffs, rubs, marks, that they essentially create their own "coating".
you reached that level most people don't come close to achieving. It's the same look a well used sword or dagger got way way, back then

I go from one hobby to another and then jump in head first! I think my materialistic ways are due to growing up with not allot as a kid and now that I can have most things I want "without" putting myself in a financial bind - I get what I want! I share with all those I care about and try to help the needy that I don't know but sometimes I need things for me too. First it was cars/trucks (my life-time count is currently at 52, but only have two now), then motorcycles (hondas and then harleys and back to hondas), then boats (happiest days with them are watching them drive off with their new owner), then rvs and atvs. All along I've collected guns, but after getting a bigger safe and then filling it - I decided to collect smaller things that don't take up a whole bunch of space like precious metals and knives. I usually do allot of research on things I want to ensure I get stuff I can turn for profit, if needed, and have been fairly successful at it. My desires like Busse knives and customs from low production makers on this forum are for me and future value is not considered when I purchase. I did pretty ok with my career choices and was able to retire young enough to support the wife pre-60s so we can enjoy our time before we start to fall apart. I worked for my coin and don't want to croak with it all in my savings for someone else to blow frivolously. 🤣

FYI - I do have about 20 users not in my collection that I use and abuse. ;)

When the wife mentions anything about it - I respond with would you rather me to start gambling, drinking or smoking ... pissing it away. 😬

I'm not so much "over" collecting knives as that I just can't really afford to collect the way I'd like to. So I make them, and at least get to handle lots of knives that I love, if for only a fleeting moment. And every now and then, I keep one. 😊

I am anxiously awaiting my Hudson Bay and SFB. ;)

I can't even build a freaking shelf let alone a knife ...

No shame in that game. It's one of the best parts of kniferdom.

I have shame for using a bastard file on larger knives (sometimes) due to my impatience on stones!

I have a 4” X 36” bench top belt sander for stuff like that with belts from 36 grit to 1000.

I also have a variable speed bench grinder with a paper wheel setup.

Aaaand a Work Sharp Ken Onion with the blade grinder attachment.

See? I’ve got a problem. 😆

Edit: Forgot I have one of these too.

But I haven’t picked up any finer grit belts for it yet.

I stopped collecting when I would rediscover knives I bought and completely forgotten about
I said "whoops". Long story short, I won't keep more than 5 knives at a time. It's better that way

Those aren't hotshot answers for the wife lol, believe me. It's called "saving"
Start selling some off, you'll feel better trust me. I knew my collection was a problem when I rediscovered knives I previously bought and completely forgotten about. Like I was shopping online in a trance --- anyway, sold them all off, won't keep more than 5 at a time

You're in a unique position where you can make your own knives, my friend --- and good ones at that, the rest of us, gotta buy em😮

When I was a kid I couldn’t afford all the cool Al Mar and similar knives. I have thought about leaning to make similar stuff now with modern materials

I buy way less than I used to and use more that I have been for a long while. I started out using and enjoyed them..then I fell into a hole of collecting to collect and not using. I ended up with a massive collection and wasn't enjoying it. it became a chore and took up too much space. now im back to buying way less and using more back like when I got going. it been much more enjoyable.......

I’m taking a much needed break atm, I’ve taken several breaks throughout the years. I’ll participate in select club exclusives and a few GEC if it’s patterns I like but I’ve accumulated so many knives that I truly don’t need any more.

Sometimes you just gotta stop and smell the roses and enjoy what you already got. The chase does get exhausting too and this economy and high knife prices don’t help at all either.

There’s a few knives I bought this year and I sold others in its place.

I sold off the bulk of my collection a few years back, I kept only the ones with great sentimental value and the ones I actually used.

A couple years later I was back up to 30 ish knives despite the fact I always used the same 3 or 4. This was mist of a recent move and so I decided to slim down again to around 10. Same deal as before sentimental and users only. Still have those 10, and 2 of them are probably gonna find they’re way out soon. ZT in my pocket, classic on my keys, and a sharpfinger on my belt when I’m riding with the guys. That’s all I use. The other 7 are spread out between my duramax, work toolbox, and a SAK in the junk drawer at home.

A what, in the junk drawer? 😮🤨

It’s great for the quick honey-do fixes when I don’t feel like walking to my truck just for a screwdriver or when I’m cooking and can’t figure out the fancy can opener she swore we needed. Besides that it handles Amazon boxes

Somehow I can see that being the top of a beer dispenser. On tap behind the bar.
