Anyone else preordering Windows 7?

Since you're a Linux user, I have to ask. What's so hard about using a win98 boot disk and fdisk? There's something like 5 options in the whole dang program. Or maybe I'm just becoming a technological anachronism.

I'm not a big user, I can install it on a machine and I can use it a little bit but don't know much about doing admin type stuff. My SuSE 11.1 install isn't letting me change the resolution of my monitor and the sound cut out for some strange reason. Had Solaris 10.6 on that machine 2 weeks ago and could never log in as Root to change settings. Kept getting an error to this effect "user can not assume another users ID". Excuse me, I am Root!! But I have not given up on it yet, it just won't be my main OS for a while.

Ever used Partition Magic or another partition utility? The Windows 7 install is that easy. FDisk works but if you want to change the partition size you have to delete that partition, create a new one the size you want and reformat. Well Windows 7 will resize with out data loss.

Was also able to do an upgrade install from Windows XP Pro SP2 to Windows 7 RC2 with out a problem but then opted to reformat and start over from scratch. Didn't want some of the old programs from XP on Windows 7 RC2.

Meh. When Windows XP isn't inexplicably broken, it seems to run ok, if a little slow. I'm running Puppy Linux right now (because Windows XP is inexplicably broken), and it runs tremendously faster.

My PC barely meets the system requirements. I don't predict any gains in performance from "upgrading" to Windows 7. It also doesn't appear to be possible to go directly from XP to 7 without wiping everything, and any other perceived benefits don't appear to outweigh the trouble of transferring and reinstalling everything, let alone the compatibility issues.

And then with the past few versions of Windows, it might be better to wait for a service pack.

Furthermore, Google has recently announced their intent to release a new operating system for free.It just doesn't seem to be worthwhile.

It does look interesting.

If the Chrome OS works as well as their browser program, it will be a winner.

I'm looking forward to seeing that. I'd use the browser now but it simply doesn't have the addons that Firefox does. A few of those I consider essential browser components like adblock and noscript.

Maybe the combination of Chrome OS and browser will include those functions as standard.

No. I'm not planning on pre-ordering. I still use Win 2000 pro.

However, the young fella at work who gets his jollies playing with all the latest phones and electronic toys likes the Beta version of Win 7 he has been using. I asked him if it was better than Win 2000 pro. His answer was noncommittal. He did say it was better than Vista by a goodly amount. Having never run Vista, that doesn't mean much to me.

Our corporate IT group, who still has us on Win 2000 pro at work, has said that we will eventually migrate to Win 7. I think that means they find Win 7 acceptable.

One reason for upgrading (eventually) will be power and it's hardware. XP only recognizes 2 gigs of ram, win7 will be able to utilize the latest motherboards that support up to 16 gigs of ram. In time, programs will start requiring more power than XP can produce.

Nope. I'm going to run XP Pro until they don't support it anymore. Most of the time I use Ubuntu Linux and ONLY switch to XP to watch the occasional "view now" movie on Netflix.

If Ubuntu was overpriced and Windows was free, I would still use Ubuntu.

Don't count on it. Maybe Noscript will eventually be available, but Adblock will almost certainly be no-go. Google makes 95% of their money from ads, and has no incentive to revise that downward.

While not trying to offend the OP, your question reminds me of this one.

Anyone else looking forward to a swift kick in the nuts?

Sorry, I've been watching microsoft fail at new operating systems for to long. I never liked mac and yet I found vista so abysmal that I bought a mac.
I am very interested in seeing how the google os looks. I know their new gmail/docs/im program looks pretty amazing.

Microsoft is slowly killing itself. Open source is the future.

Panicware's adblocker seems to work fine. I've been using Chrome for a few months now, and not one popup or unwanted ad. And Kaspersky eliminates malicious scripts.

Yeah but it will likely take 14 gig of that ram to run smoothly.

You may have a point there.

I'll look into those. I'm pretty happy with my current Firefox setup though so I have no real reason to change other than playing.

I've learned the hard way to NEVER pre-order anything on it's first release.

It's always either later than predicted OR full of bugs/misstakes.

I'll wait untill the second version (servicepack in this case) at least.

How much hard drive space will it support ?

I think my limit now is 2T.

:D

I think 2TB is the limit, sp3 might have increased that (not really sure).

I was wrong about memory
Windows XP Home & Pro supports 4GB but will only use 3 to 3.75 with the OS and hardware setup.
Windows XP Pro x64 Editions support 16GB minus OS and hardware.

Thank for noticing and taking that in the spirit that it was meant :D

As a joke, it's pretty funny. As a jab at Vista (and MS) it's true and really funny :D  .

It's just so cool to dump on Microsoft- and especially Vista! Never mind that most people have only "heard of someone" who's had problems. As far as W7 being new, it's mainly an improved version of Vista (based on several good authorities- I'm not that knowledgeable).

I got 7 last week (I know, not much of a trial) and everything went fine. That's pretty good for me- the last work I did on a computer was 6 years ago (I work with them constantly- or should that be vice versa?). So far it's running everything I had on my desktop and my laptop and more- and I managed import all my stuff (address book, etc) without help. That should give you some idea of what a techie I am not! Still, no problems of any kind, it's blazingly fast and the graphics are amazing.

So to answer the OP- yeah, I pre-ordered.

Sorry for the rant, but I've used Microsoft stuff my whole life, pretty much trouble free (as has most of the world). My brother started on Macs and is now on PCs and when my sister got a Mac and I finally got to check Apple's gift to the world, I thought it sucked! It was slower than I could stand and was anything but "intuitive". Still, if you like Macs, have at them, but you shouldn't need to bash Microsoft to make yourselves feel better!
