Anyone else scared of carrying the nice knives they own?

I carry my blacked out paramilitary 2 1 out of every 20 carry days. I always go back to the delica 4. I'm always afraid I'm gonna loose it for 3x the cost of the delica but the pm2 is deff my favorite. I do the same thing with lights. I never carry my zebra light or Eagletac either just my 20 buck streamlight

"Scared" isn't the right word. Cautious, perhaps?

I don't carry anything that can't be easily replaced.

I don't care about carrying the nice knives, I care about losing the nice knives. I've come to the realization though that it is better to have carried a knife and dinged it up, rather than to have left it in the safe.

I don't buy things that I can't use. No point in it to me. Knives especially. A fine tool deserves to be carried, used and enjoyed. Not locked in a safe to be fondled once in awhile. That's a waste.

I agree with this, though I have to take out the easily replaced part due to either funds or knife being discontinued. Plus the sentimental value, I tend to get attached to my knives sadly so their not easily replaced.

Seriously?

You didn't buy the knife as an investment (or if you did, you have other issues). Definitely carry it.

When you start buying more expensive toys than the ones you have, carrying it won't be a problem... I started with a Delica and an Inova flashlight, flash fwd a couple of years and my last pocket dump included a Les George VECP and my Lenslight KO.... I am a little nervous of anything happening to them but just make sure your clip is snug and you should be just fine.

I guess it depends as always. I dither around the edges of knife collecting with slip joints, but my moderns were purchased pretty much to carry regardless of the price. But I wouldn't carry a $200 folder where that I suspect might result in its dissappearance or be sugjected to serious "abuse". I usually have a Vic SAK in my pocket and whether I like to admit it to myself or not, that SAK gets 90% of the daily use.

You have to ask yourself why precisely you purchased the knife in the first place and if it was to use it. Use it. But keep your options open in terms of potential abuse. This is part of the reason I have started to carry a multi-tool also.

This question also comes up with custom fixed blades and you just have to deal with it. My decision on customs is that if I am unwilling to use it, I won't buy it. That decision was faced at the Blade Show two years ago on a master knife maker's piece. I wanted that knife but I knew I wouldn't use it, so I decided not to spend the money. I'm just not rich enough to blow $1000 on something I will never use and most likely will not appreciate in value substantially in the short term.

I have some Randall's that I will probably sell since I've had them for years and have no intention of using them. More clutter. Good clutter. But still clutter.

Scared of carrying a knife? Never. Scared of having it lost, stolen, or "liberated" by somebody who has no business touching it? Considerably.

I recently started a $2200 project with Darrel Ralph and when it arrives in a few weeks, I plan to carry it every day and use it. I'll put it this way... would you spend $10,100 on a watch and not wear it? I've already got a scratch on the band and it doesn't bother me none.

I buy knives to carry and use, no matter the price. I've never lost one yet. I've never worried. It's when you start worrying you somehow lose them. If you own it, then use it. You can't take it with you when you die, I've never seen a uhaul behind a hearse. :) lol

I've broken a number of folders and fixed blades over the years of owning them; mostly due to using them harder than I should have.;) Fortunately, none were that expensive. (sub $100)

A Hinderer XM-18 gen 4 is my "most expensive" knife right now and it's essentially a safe queen at this point as the ergo's don't really work for me. If I like a knife I'll use it regardless of price.:thumbup:

I don't worry so much about losing them, but also I don't buy real expensive knives either (everybody has their own idea of what expensive means though). I think the most I've got invested in a knife in my EDC rotation is a little over $200 for my ZT 0561.

On rare occasions when I go fishing I carry a much cheaper knife.

Nope.
Not me.
But then again, $5.00 or $500.00, I buy my knives with the intent of using them.

This.

To be afraid of carrying a certain knife because you *might* lose it is silly. Why worry about something that might happen?

You paid for it, enjoy it.

I don't own a museum, so I use everything I have. Whether it's an expensive watch, car, knife, or firearm, I got them all so I could use them.

I have come to the realization that I can't spend over about $200 on a knife and expect to carry it and use it hard. I've always wanted a ZT600 but what always stops me when one comes along (besides the pocket clip) is I know I will never carry it. I buy folders to use. All my ZTs, BMs, Spydies, etc... get carried and used. If they don't get carried, out they go. Now fixed blades that I collect, that is a different story.....

I treat all my knives like tools. I love seeing a pricey custom knife with battle scars, shows you know what a knife is meant for.

But then again, I'm a musician that buys and uses $2000-4000 guitars without thinking twice about it. Why spend money on something only to look at it?

SRV didn't care how "pretty" his strat was, and I'm sure if he had a sebenza it would look the same...

I am generally not interested in $200 or more folders for using. But I just ordered a ZT and I fully intend to use that knife. It will do me no good flipping it open at home and rubbing on it. This IS an expensive folder for me and one of my most expensive. I have some elephant ivory handled knives that are more expensive, but this one is right up there in price compared to the others. I intend to use it the same as I would my favorite Delica.
