Anyone else use a shemagh or other headwrap?

Around here, only social workers wear them, social workers = socialism workers = communism i.e. all people who wear shemaghs are communist social workers!

I carry a 38"x38" cotton bandana I stole from the missus with me everywhere. It has been used for everything from a head cover to pot holders, and has worked great. Plus, it doesn't look all tactical or whatnot, so I don't look like a terrorist when I wear it; instead I look like an idiot or a pirate. (Red with white skulls all over it.)

I have been thinking about trying to replace it with something bright orange so it would be a bit more visible, but so far I have been unable to find anything correctly sized. Was thinking maybe of trying ripstop cotton too for something a bit more durable. More than likely I will need to order the fabric and then dye it to the color I would like, but in any event it should be a fun project to end up with a fairly useful piece of gear that is useful for a great number of things. I think the old Boy Scout bandanas were made to also be used as a triangle bandage back in the day, at least before they shortened them up and made them so small.

Yep, I have one, and it is my most used piece of gear. I love that darn thing, especially because it was a gift from a very close friend of the family who so happens to be an Army vet (I can't wait to see him again).

It keeps me warm when I need it, and cool when I am being blasted from the sun, it is my pillow at night, a sling (actually had to do this...not proud to say it :foot:), a makeshift pack, potentially char cloth, has been used as a compression bandage while I went through my med kit for proper bandages and treatment (dummy on my trip opened himself realllyyy good on a cactus...*sigh*), strained water in Arizona when backpacking, collects my fuzzy shavings...To say it simply, I just love it.

Call me a terrorist, call me weird, but I like it because it works for me :D

Check Hunting supply places. They make Hunter/Blaze Orange fabric.

I suppose it does work better here in my country (tropical, island weather). The cloth's feel to the skin seems to get better with use.

1. Blanket (torso only)
2. Earth pad/picnic cloth
3. Triangular bandage/trauma splint
4. Gear hammock (securing by elevating stuff from the ground)
5. Improvised rope
6. "Manly" fashion item
7. Emergency filtration system
8. Rolled-up pillow/head rest for long travels
9. Tool roll

The only downside I could think about is the politics/cultural smear associated with it.

Zombie thread, but a good one. New things added for its use.

I've had mine for 12 years now. A bit frayed and thin with age but still a useful and comforting piece of gear to have a around.

Wow what an old thread...

Couple of other uses...

Have used one for a couple of years now. A really good piece of gear. I use it at night when I'm sleeping to hold all the stuff from my pockets. A REALLY great piece of gear in cold weather to keep cold wind off the face

Check out the Hobo Hanky in blaze orange. Basically it's a blaze orange shemagh. Plus the web site has good info and photos on all the ways it can be used. And they have instructions on how to tie it as a hobo bindle. :)

Next best think is a big towel in case you need to travel the universe. I heard it works great to flag down a UFO.
I used an old bed sheet cut down to the size I like. Works great for me when hiking or backpacking. Its amazing of the uses you can think for one when you have a need.

I have 2, and find I don't use them as much as my buff, and my oversized (27x27") bandana. I guess if I made a concerted effort, I could find uses for them, but since I don't like headwraps in general, it seems like the primary use of it would go to waste with me.

ETA: I have used one as a waist wrap, a la Cody Lundin. This is a handy way to tuck things away things like a machete, when you're working, and it kinda makes you feel like a pirate!:emot-yarr:

Hailing from Canada where today it was T-shirt weather (High today was minus 2 swealtering I Know! ) I like to employ what we like to call a Touque! (or beenie for all you americans down south)

No, but I likely will. I think about those scarves now and then. I can even see a possible application for them while metal detecting in the sun.

Yes, good for cold weather, especially in the wind. I wear this unless I have my neck gaiter.

I was ordering a few things from Brigade, and decided to get a shemagh too http://www.actiongear.com/cgi-bin/tame.exe/agcatalog/results.tam?rlk=1953687 (I got the cheaper one)
I shave my head, and have pasty white skin to boot  and am always looking for ways to protect myself from the sun. This looks like a pretty cool multi use piece of gear.
I'll post up a review once I get it, but I thought I'd see if anyone else uses one.

Please share what knife that is in your avatar, I need one :D

Also, have used a Shemagh for years, it's just a big handkerchief.

I prefer a extra extra large cloth in brown or black, good for soaking in ice water and wrapping around my neck in hot weather.
