Anyone ever been embarrassed about fellow knife enthusiasts?

This is kinda like saying someone who isn't 6'7" shouldn't be allowed to like basketball. Or someone that can't play an instrument shouldn't listen to music.

A hobby's a hobby.

Not embarrassed. And I happen to think I would make a mighty fine XL underwear model. :)

Well I am what you would consider overweight. I am 6' 1" and I weigh 250. I used to weigh 314 and I have been losing weight. I'm 35 years old. For the last year I have been going to the gym 4 times a week to do 40 minutes of cardio. I do either elliptical, treadmill, or stair climbers. I then also lift free weights at home. I am currently carrying around 30 lbs extra body fat than I should have. I take the stairs instead of the elevator at work and I have to chuckle inside when any of the twenty something guys I work with go up the stairs with me and are out of breath.

I don't want to die young from a bad heart or other crap due to fatness, so I'm doing what I can.

So yeah, I guess I am one of those guys you speak of. I do wear flannel, but only when I am off work and want to feel cozy in the house. It isn't stained however.

:)

Fact is over the last few decades anytime I have been around knife people there has always been an atmosphere of respect. Have not noticed any great difference in weight or size than in the general population. Never have been embarrassed at a show unless I hear of theft, etc.

I am sometimes embarrassed by some of the more clueless behavior on knife sites. ;).

I think it's more of a problem that most people in North America are over weight in general. I don't think fat people necessarily gravitate towards knife collecting. In our modern age of processed foods, high in refined carbohydrates, most people in the western world are becoming fatter by the minute.

And flannel is great.

I'm 150lbs 5'8". 22 pull ups with full kit (dead hang, none of that kipping cr@p), marathons, 4:30 mile time (yeah, I ran track :D). So no, being a "knife guy" doesn't make you obese. If you're heavier, honestly, I don't care as long as it won't kill you.
I'm never embarassed, I don't care if you're skinny, "fat," black, white, man, women, or whatever.
Being larger, as others have mentioned, does not neccesarily make you out of shape. These gentlemen here, don't really look that intimidating. Not particularly impressive, not scary, no bulging muscles. But guess what? They're BUD/S instructors. They're the men who make sure those who become SEALs deserve it and are best for it. If you think any of them look a little out of shape, go PT with them for a bit.

I have followed this thread with interest and just for a mental exercise, I would urge all to re-read the thread substituting Jewish, Islamic, or immigrant, for the words fat, overweight or obese. Perhaps a different perspective may be realised.

The last group of knife people I was with had very few people that were overweight, and none that were slobs. The weight thing isn't something I tend to focus on anyway.

Everybody has a vice or weakness, the vice of overindulging in food just happens to the most visible to the average person.

Being overweight is really the only vice that a person can't hide. You could meet a knife enthusiast that does $100 worth of coke every day, and you'd never know it. Imagine if people could know your worst flaw just by looking at you.

I also found this post to be very thought provoking. Overweight people are pretty much the only group that you're still allowed to make fun of or even discriminate against. Calling somebody "fat" isn't really considered to be politically incorrect.

Its funny but my girl friend mentioned the exact same thing after she saw me watching some reviews on youtube...I've always wondered why there are so many overweight knife nuts? I guess its prorobly because most are professionals with families and no time to exercise, that's understandable and doesnt bother me the least unless they think they are professional knife fighters etc. It doesnt make me feel embarrassed that guys with guts like knives, everyone is entitled to like what they want and I always enjoy talkin to a knife nut whether he/she be chubby or not.

It seems the only thing that people are more obsessed with than food, is other people's looks.

You have to play the hand you're dealt. Some people simply have an easier time gaining weight and a harder time losing it. Would it be genetics, disease or mental problems.

It sounds like you're one of the lucky ones, while others might have to eat half of what you do and exercise 4-5 times as much to stay in the same shape.

Please don't count it towards their worth as a human being or a knife enthusiast. I would be more embarrassed to be in any way associated with someone who say what you did in your OP, than if they were fat, ugly, blue or otherwise stand out physically.

Dude....you want to be embarrassed...go to gun show sometimes. My God! Im a huge second ammendment guy but some of the people that I find cruising around my local guns shows shouldnt be allowed to breed much less own a gun. Its a huge source of frustration for me.

Vanity is a sad sad state of mind. I don't pass judgment on folks because of their size or overall apperance. I don't usually think that I am better than anyone. But the OP seems to have a serious Vain streak that all people should look like him to do what he does. So do you get a sick twisted feeling in your little gut when you clip your EDC into your pocket that "OMG" soon I will become a stained plaid shirt wearing slob if I keep collecting knives? Or are you on the verge of producing and directing a new work-out video for the Obese knife guy so he can feel better about himself that he looks more like you? I have dealt with your type for a long time. I am a LARGE man! I have been riding sportbikes since before there were sportbikes. And the Vain skinny dolts that are still living with there parents always tell me I should be on a Hogg... They just can't deal with the fact someone who looks so different from them is doing exactly what they do! We were all young and in better shape at some time. And we all can't be the same. So instead of making a visual judgement about someone and their size. Get over yourself & talk to a person before decide have an overall veiw of any class of people...

First off, let me say that this post makes me sound like a jerk and a narcissist, plus I'm aware that it's a complete generalization and why should I even care? But...

Something has been bothering me lately, so I'll come out and say it: I can't help but notice that lot of the guys I've met over the years who are into knives are overweight slobs. I'm starting to be embarrassed to admit that I like and collect knives- not because I'm embarrassed of the hobby, but of the mental image a "knife enthusiast" label conjures up.

I've seen these knife guys at the sportsmans' shows, talked to them at the store counters while buying knives, and personally know some that are casual acquaintances. Almost all have big guts (even the younger guys) & poor muscle tone. The knife clipped in the pocket almost looks a little ridiculous, since the users seem to have physical limitations that would limit the effective wielding of a knife. My wife has met some of them occasionally and made the same independent observation. I'm not talking about the old timers, which seem to be in better shape than the youngins.

I'm no underwear model myself, but I try to keep fit and avoid the excessive use of stained flannel in my wardrobe. Maybe I'm being an elitist, but what's the deal? Anybody else notice this, or am I just imagining things?

ps- sorry to offend anybody here who is overweight, I'm just making an observation. I'm sure I have lots of personal shortcomings of my own.

Wielding of a knife? Just because someone has a knife clipped in their pocket doesn't mean they are knife enthusiasts. I am not sure where you are trying to go with this thread but I think I smell a TROLL.

The greatest prejudice of our age is directed at ugly or fat people. They had a documentary where they had these ugly people that had the perfect resumes for the job, and some beautiful people with pathetic resumes for the jobs. They sent them to interviews with a hidden camera, and the good looking people got every single job, and the ugly people with perfect resumes got none. And some of the interviewers were ugly themselves! It just goes to show you how your perceptions of others are clouded by looks - if you don't realize it, you should. Either that or it's a good illustration that (us) fat & ugly people need to stick together!

You know, I am kind of fat, and of the thousands and thousands of times I have used the ridiculous looking knife that is clipped to my pocket, I have never had to stab anyone with it.

Guess I am just taking my chances here.

Looks like I am going to have to stop hiking, fishing, camping, motorcycling, hunting, etc and start sitting at home and looking up knives on the internet more since I do not look like an outdoorsman. I wouldnt want to embarrass anyone.

Thanks man.
