Anyone here carry a knife for selfdefense?

Alacran. thanks for your concern. You would not likely get hassled here for carrying a knife in the outback.....even a large Dundee Bowie! Our laws.....although they can be enforced anywhere (so be nice!), are generally targeted at urban areas.:grumpy:

Yeah what he said.

Last time I went out into the country (call it the outback if you must  ) I had a couple of machettes, 3 Cold Steel fixed blades, half a dozen Sog fixed blades and a fair few folders as well.

Have to play with my toys from time to time:D

I carry a benchmade 940 for chore work, my ’98 commander cause I loves it, and a small Greco fixed blade that never does anything at all. See, in Illinois intent is the bar that turns having a knife onto a crime. I can’t carry a knife with the intent to hurt people or it’s a felony. It doesn’t matter much that the only people I would hurt are the ones that are trying to hurt me first.
As to fights, I too do my best to avoid them, but if I find myself in a position where a fight can’t be avoided I have one rule. WIN! If I get hurt, or the person I’m trying to protect gets hurt then I don’t win so I will escalate any situation to the level where that doesn’t happen. All the while doing my best to defuse the situation and explain, if given time, what will happen to the aggressor if they peruse their chosen course. I’ve only drawn a knife once to protect myself and fortunately the BG in question decided that that coupled with the fact that we already had the cops on the cell phone meant that they should just go away. They did, and we had a happy ending

Sounds like you went in a little underprepared. ;)

Hey coldsteel03, I am right next door to you and I cary a EDC daily. Methods of cary are in the waist band, front side or back. In the front right or left pocket. Or in the back right or left pocket. My recomendation for the knife itself, Framlock or linerlock for quick vertical feed, because when things go bad gross motor skills take over. Blade needs to be 3 to 4 inch for vital penitration, blade style is of your choice because if you push hard enough, it will go in. As for your little handgun, in the waist band with baggy shirt. This is just a little advice, if somone pulls a knife on you and you are within arms reach. Do not go for your gun, they will kill you. Create some space before choosing your method of defense.
For you fine trusting gentleman who think that just because your great state took the good folks hand guns away, the criminals cant get one, you are waiting to be a victim. If all you will ever need is your fist, well you must be a profesional boxer.

Amen to that!!!:D

I'd only like to add a thought. I've noticed many of you mention carrying a knife as a tool, only to be used as a weapon as a last resort. I can't argue with that philosophy; I do the same myself. However, are you all fully aware just how lousy a slightly dull knife is for defensive cutting? Do you honestly keep your defensive knife sharp as a razor blade? What if you finally need your knife in a desparate moment, and you had spent the whole day cutting up cardboard boxes, scraping stuff, etc.? Now, a quick slash will literally bounce off your attacker's bare skin, whereas it would have sliced to the bone if your blade were sharp. If you add clothing, (or in my example something like a fur coat) to the mix, your blade will not even leave a scratch. I have found this out the hard way on several occasions, guys.

Also, if we're talking about a blade that is not scary sharp, the shape and grinds become exponentially more important. For instance, a very sharp drop point *can* penetrate. Never as well as a slender dagger or clip point, but it can work. Problem is, it relies on the edge to do all the work. If the knife is slightly dull from a day of hard use, that same knife WILL NOT go in! Though, even when it's a bit dull, a slender clip point or dagger will still penetrate skin fairly easily.

I always have a knife with me where it's legal and/or pepper spray and/or a hand gun. I would much prefer to run, drive, scream .....or do almost anything to avoid a confrontation . by myself but if the wife and the boy were with me, things could be differnt, for me avoidence is the big watchword , followed with training on how to use those tools we all would rather not have touse. mjmcdowell
