Anyone here like Trappers?

First snow dust of the season this morning out here at the end of the Island

Could you help me and define what a 'trapper' is.

And what is a folding hunter and a copperhead?

Also GEC call a scout and a pioneer.

Thanks.

Here are a couple of mine. I apologise for the poor photos, I'll try to do better next time. The first is a Hen and Rooster mini. Don't know how to date it, but it's marked Bertram Cutlery, and is very well finished. Brass liners, though, so I'm pretty sure it's not one of A.G. Russell's beauties. The other is just a workin' Case, nothing special

Here is a nice hefty Trapper of sorts from the Ray Cover collection

A real oldie by one of the greats, A one hander by W T Fuller, Elephant ivory handles that WT said he shot himself. I saw the tusks under his bed once while building his knife shop.

Bob W,
That is a nice collection. I dig the two with the saws.
Bill

I actually posted them as a bit of a joke, since they look completely lame in comparison to the many beautiful knives being shown here. :)

FYI, the upper model with the saw is a 97OT, the BuzzSaw Trapper. The lower knife was made in Schrade's final days and is a mixture of Old Timer blades and Uncle Henry plasti-stag handles.

Best Wishes,
-Bob

I've posted this before but this is a "gent's" knife by Reese Bose, which just means a small trapper, I think:

"Farmers knives" by german W. Kneissler (simple, rough made, affordable and sturdy) :D

that`s what my Kneissler knife looks alike after years of daily use:

Wow, I'm late to this thread! Lotsa nice trappers here!

Wolfgang, is there a way to get ahold of a couple of those Kneissler trappers in the 'states? I've searched the web a little bit, but couldn't seem to find much useful info...

@puukkoman
Unfortunately Mr. Kneissler doesn`t have a website (don`t think he has a PC at all ;) ) and only makes them as a kind of "customer service". He runs a little household-ware store and sometimes sells on some smaller markets and local fairs.
I did organize a little group buy some time ago (at BritishBlades) and the guys were very pleased with their knives.
Mr. Kneissler will start making some of these knives in February again, he told me.
For sending to USA there are at least 2 problems that makes the knives loosing their "bargain status" ;) .
1st point is the high value of the European € versus US $ . (knife with carbonsteel or ss blade and cowhorn scales is 25.- Euro, only.)
2nd point is the postage that depends on the weight, of course. (8.60 Euro uninsured, up to 2 kg and 17.- Euro insured.) A single knife incl. envelope is just below 100g and is 4.- Euro uninsured, 6.-Euro insured.
There might be a 3rd problem --- US customs!? :o

All that in mind and the fact they are really rough made (but well worth the money for my needs :D), it might not be worth to order one of these? ;)

Regards,

Wolfgang :D

Aw shucks... Sounds like more of a hassle than it's worth. Thanks for all the info, just the same!

This a newbie question.

Any takers, or should I ask this in a new thread?

Thanks

neeman,

Levine's Guide to Knives says, "A "Trapper" is a jack knife with two specific full length blades. The master blade is clip-point with a very long clip. The second blade is a long spey."

A. G. Russell's glossary says, "A two bladed knife, most commonly with both blades at the same end, the blades often a drop point and a long spey blade."

I think in the real world there is some wiggle room as far as these strict definitions go and that is OK with me.

Well here is one. Serial #1.

I got a couple more, a GEC Tidioute SARPNT, Northfield #73 in walnut herringbone. I'll take some pics tomorrow.
