Anyone here smoke a pipe?

Buy the pipes that have the filters in them. They seem to take some of the bitterness out of the smoke.

Don't rush out and buy a real expensive pipe and tobacco from the get go. The "Drug Store" pipes will serve you well while you decide whether you like it or not. I would skip the vanilla and cherry Cavendish you find everywhere and get some Ashton Rainy Day from your local tobacco shop. Its my favorite aromatic pipe tobacco and about 7 dollars a tin. My favorite tobacco overall is McCellands Frog Morton On The Bayou...mmmm mm.

If you find you like pipes, spend a little on a Meerschaum. Slightly expensive, you can't really touch the bowl and you only want to smoke it while sitting down(fragile), its a incredibly smooth smoke. And watching the meerschaum discolor over time is fun.

I am by no means a Aficionado, so take my word with a grain of salt.

Also, smoke it slow and use wood matches. And don't try to keep a cherry going, its OK to let it go out. It makes the smoke harsh and if you don't have a good cake built up yet, can harm the pipe.

Dude! That youtube pipe maker was a great link, thanks for showing me that. I'd be very interested to know if the wood type matters as much as I'd imagine it does. I was also amazed when he split it, but I was wondering how he was going to get the stem tunneled.

Anyway, I'm a piper here. I recommend picking up a corn cob pipe to start out with, they smoke great even compared to very expensive ones. They are also inexpensive (a few dollars), lightweight, and easily replaceable. Then find yourself a good tobacco blend (it's very much so worthwhile to try and find a local tobacconist or pipe shop, they can give you great tips, great materials, and good weed).

Basically you need to pack the tobacco firmly but not too tight, using either a 'tamper' or your finger. Then light the top layer of the tobacco with a MATCH (lighters for a pipe is barbaric), then tamp the top layer again. Re-light this tobacco while drawing (puffing on the stem) strongly a few times. And there you go! Puff, but don't inhale. Don't let it get too hot (if it's too hot to hold comfortably, it's too hot).

After that honestly, it will be learning basics followed by trial and error. Here are some good links to get you started.

Ashton Rainy Day

Awesome Suggestion!

I am smoking the Ashton Gold Rush right now!

The kids backed up the toilet, and after I got that cleared the room really smelled awful. So, I lit up a trusty piece of English Briar and began the re-aroma process. There is a bit of tobacco left in the pipe, so I came to finish at the internet. What timing, with this thread going; I also noticed all the pipes in the campfire comfort thread from last week.

Also, I have refinished a number of estate pipes found cheaply on an international auction site. For the handiwork of the members present, this is an option. The pipes can be had for about $3.oo each (English Briar) and you went shed a tear if you drop them.

good info. guys... i have been wanting to get a nice (tobacco) pipe for a long time...:D

Haven't tried gold rush. Reason i smoked Aromatics so long was its the only pipe smell my fiancee like inside the house(especially Rainy Day...she asked me to smoke some in the house just for the smell). But now no more smoking in the house and I don't have a comfy chair outside so My smoking has died down a little bit.

Ya I forgot to mention no inhaling lol. Well I inhale every once in awhile but only like 3-4 times a bowl. When I first started getting into pipes I was also a cigarette smoker and inhaled as such.....didn't know tobacco could give an almost.....herb(those days are long behind me lol)...like buzz. Then the nausea set in.....then my dinner came up. So be careful lol.

Damn...I wish I had some tobacco.

I've been thinking about getting into it. Anyone have any tips?

Before I offer any "advice," let's see that ID, fella.:D

I was just reintroduced the pleasure of the corn cob pipe with a generous gift from Spooky Pistolero.

If you want to experiment with some blends, it's going to be tough to beat that. Smooth, cool smoke. Doesn't work too well with Navy cut unless you crumble it well though.

Other than that, I have a few Nordings that get me by.

I have a nording, great pipe. Definitely not a "taking a stroll pipe", it could be used as a bludgeon.

Hahaha, now that's a good description of some of the briar I've got. Here's the only pipe I've ever actually 'wanted' beyond a cob, a dublin-style semi-churchwarden. It's definitely a 'contemplative' piece, not one for a stroll.

Something about that pic is imminently comforting, Jeff. Good desktop background. [And glad you like the cob!]

I have an extensive pipe collection, & many different types of tobacco. I enjoy my pipe with coffee, & by the fire when camping. it can be very relaxing.
