Anyone here smoke a pipe?

Ah, nothing like a good load of Uhle's #300 blend (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) in a well broken-in briar, along with a snifter of cigar scotch (yes, they make it). Been smoking that blend since 1969... a cube cut burley blend that burns cool and long... non aromatic but a great aroma.

Hahaha, now that's a good description of some of the briar I've got. Here's the only pipe I've ever actually 'wanted' beyond a cob, a dublin-style semi-churchwarden. It's definitely a 'contemplative' piece, not one for a stroll.
Heres my favorite churchwarden(the smooth version), also conveniently(thanks to two different stems) one of my favorite stroll pipes. Still kind of heavy though

Ever find that when smoking at churchwardens you use the stem to point at things? Or is that just me lol.

Oooh Cigar scotch, I am intrigued.

I have found i prefer the smell of burleys over aromatics.

Not yet! ;) It's (if I recall) a peterson. Not too pricey but I'm gonna wait until the new year on that one.

I love my Peterson. Its my other walkin' pipe lol.

I smoke hookahs which is a lot more pleasent to smoke compared to cigars and pipes. Its a lot cooler and even a beginner can take in huge hits without hacking out a lung.

Haha, that's the biggest payoff of a churchwarden, what looks more intelligent than pointing at stuff with your pipe stem? Speak cryptically enough and people will confuse you for Einstein. :D

I recently saw a cob-churchwarden, talk about oxymoronic. But cool.

MAN. If you don't smoke now, for god's sake don't even think about it. I quit 33 years ago and it still bother me now and then.:mad:

Long stemmed pipes are a bitch to clean.

Try Walgreens Bulk Rich Vanilla. Inexpensive and evocatively aromatic.

Get some inexpensive pipes first, you have to rotate them to smoke, really, else you may burn out the bowl. Build up a cake and resist any anal compulsion to carve it out.

Watch eBay...lots of folks dumping relatives' pipes...in this pristine, non-smoking world of ours. Easy to clean and sterilize.

Get used to going outside to smoke. You will be excluded from many places...public and private.

Bothers you that you want a smoke or the ramifications of smoking have bothered you? Either way, good on you for quitting.

I agree it's not necessarily an advisable habit, but pipe smoking is a cleaner way to go. Only taken in the mouth and only briefly. Plus I'm a hugely intermittent smoker, may smoke a few days in a row, may take a few weeks off.

I had a Hookah and loved it, I would still smoke. BUT I started getting a huge headache every time I smoked. And hookahs can't really go with you on a walk and they are too bulky for setting up around a campfire.

Also Cats+Hookah+Hot Coals+Carpet= baaaad news.

My IQ goes up a few points when ever I pick up my churchwarden.

Hey I used to smoke a corn cob pipe and had a couple others...been years since I've done that...you know a pipe and the woods do mix!

I used to get some great tobacco that smelled just like good hot chocolate...I wish I could remember the name of the blend...I'd go get me another pipe and start doing it again!

I actually smoked cigarettes for about four years, until recently. Because of the gf, I had to quit (which I'm now really grateful for). I still smoke a cigar now or then, but they're not really my thing...too phallic!! I have no real problems with cravings, they only hit me every now and then. It was hard for about a month after quitting (cold turkey) but I maybe I don't get addicted easily? I dunno.

LOL
Yeah I always feel smarter with my churchwarden.
To the OP-
If you want a really quality pipe on the relative cheap look at Petersons. phenomenal smoke and a good intro into the more expensive pipes.
If you can find a quality tobacconist, see what they have and what they recommend.
Estate pipes (term for "used") can also be a great way to go. The pipes are already broken in and are much cheaper so you can get a more expensive one if you choose.
I started on a Dr. Grabows Walgreens special and after twelve years (started in college) have moved through to Petersons and Savenelli.
If you ever get the chance go to Strauss Tobacconist in Cincinnatti. One of the odest left in the country. I have lived from Chicago to Florida and am now in Iowa and I haven't ever yet found their rival. And if you do make it in get their "Kentucky Gentlemen." What a beautiful smoke!
Biggest learning curve and most important thing to learn is how to properly pack your pipe. It's an art but it's the foundtion to a good smoke. Don't be ashamed to ask someone to teach you. It's the best way.

I guess it bothers me that after that many years, I still reach for that shirt pocket after a good meal and with a cup of coffee. It was hard for me to quit but I was worried about the second hand smoke with three youngsters in the house. To each his own but I hate to see anyone go through what I did to quit. Not trying to interfere in others business.:)

I suggest that if you are going to buy a pipe you start small with a corn pipe, or clay pipe. its relatively cheap and if it turns out that its not your thing then your only out 15 bucks or so. i will be buying my first Real pipe soon (a little Christmas present for myself) and am quite excited.

Tip- NEVER EVER, under any circumstance rush it!!!!! take time and enjoy the smoke, i generally give myself at least half an hour time to sit and smoke (throw back a brew) and love it.

Nope, all good reasons and all good advice. Personally, I smoke alone and I do it outside, when I do at all.

Cigarettes, for sure, are something I've definitely advised many folks against. Apples and oranges to me to a fair degree.

I've been know to buy a few pipes now and then ;) Got some nice Brighams, a few estate pipes, some english styles, a Bjarne churchwarden.....

rule 1: never rush your smoke and puff puff puff away, you will burn your tongue and it hurts! You'll feel it for days!

i can make my Savoy pipe last almost 1.5 hours, enough time to enjoy it, relax, drink some beer or whiskey.

It's not a frequent habit...usually when out "in the field" and when we go backpacking/camping, it's nice to relax by the fire and puff on my pipe:D

Never drink the water in it. :barf:

I had a buddy all the sudden went into this coughing spitting spasm and I thought he was having a heart attack. Turned out he tipped it back and accidentally drank about an ounce of resinous water:barf:
